Bushcraft Tar Production

Hello Friends. In this video, I am building my bushcraft tar distillery. I am currently preparing for a one month stay at my log cabin and will be working on multiple projects while there. I am publishing this video without a voiceover, as I need to prioritize focusing on this task. I want to hear your opinion if I should occasionally produce videos only with nature's sounds.

Improve quality by storing after a while water will settle on bottom and can be separated. Also part of tvat steam is turpentine. Capture it and condence to get great multi use product. That is let tar drip into jar with two pipes in lid one in the other outtake of vapour. Let vapour from lid go through to cooling coil (preferably water cooled) and you get water+turpentine dripping from other end, let water settle and decant turpentine out (does not mix well with water) To get tar out have hole in bottom of first jar and drain by removing plug periodicaly.

You sir, are the FIRST person that has FINALLY understood the correct way to use pyrolysis on fatwood in a way that you can visually see when the process is complete! By using the tube the way that you did was far superior to anyone else's method. Congratulations sir. You could also place a tube in the top and allow the terpene to cool and distill into another container. I personally didn't need any narration. I loved it just the way you made it. Great job!

A top tube is a great idea --- mixing 40% turpintine 40% bioled linseed oil, and 20% of pine oil, or as said here, pinetar, and sometimes said, Swedish Tar --- apply warmed to say, a wood boat, 5 applications, will resist the seven seas.

Another amazing video, and no voice were needed at all. But a comment about the amount of terpentine gas lost: I did it years ago, with a bigger barrel and much longer pipe, also added watercooling with a halfpipe tube around the main pipe to condence maximum of the lost gas. The fume of the pipe is so flamable that before the end of the process, y tried to ignite it. Flames of about 1 meter long lightened up the air, i burned my both hands trying to stop the fire, and it took about 2 minutes to blow out the flames with full speed of my garden hose with water. The color of your Tar seem very light, which proof the best quality. This is the best natural product for preserving logwalls ever. No factory made product is better. 1000 years old churches in Norway are remaining still , and the only product allowed for use is the Tar you made. God bless your work.

This young man is a genius. I can't think of a more fitting word to describe him. The only other place I've seen charcoal made from wood, was on one of my yearly winter vacations, to Jamaica. However, they used freshly chopped wood, as opposed to dry wood. Fascinating stuff.

If you take some of that charcoal that you produce and you grind it up and makes it with the soil it will turn the soil into an extremely fertile soil called bio char.. Mix it with your compost and see the results. Great video

Very nice video ! And I never thought of using a downward evacuation to get the syngaz and the oils ! Very good idea ! Just few points: - Try using a more funnel-like shape at the bottom with a grill or just few rods to maintain the wood, instead of a tube to have less loss at the bottom - Try to be more homogeneous with the size of the wood chunks you want to pyrolyse, to avoid having to run the fire for too long for nothing, or too short and having an incomplete pyrolysis like on the big chunks we can see. - Try using a larger tube, to avoid clogging with my next advices - Try passing the tube through a fresh water current to condensate more oil - The gas escaping is syngaz, it's flammable, and you can actually run an explosion engine with this, given you adjust the intake mixture manually, and yes it work flawlessly without hurting the engine ! The USA actually produced trucks with a syngaz extractor at the back to run on wood during the second world war. - The oil/tar that is flowing is actually called creosote, it's a mixture of a lot of hydrocarbons extracted from wood, it's biocide, meaning it kill plants, bacteria, fungus, small insects, etc. basically it's poisonous, even without eating it, just through the skin, and it's highly carcinogenic, so beware, try to avoid inhaling fumes and touching it bare hands. - The rosin, the clearer product may be colophon, also biocide, and It is an irritant and allergenic for the skin and respiratory tract, in pure form or by its degradation products. So beware, stay safe, you're amazing !

Oh, and btw, in case you didn't know, which I highly doubt, the charcoal open up the way to forge steel without a gas forge, because it burn hotter than wood, so you can make a fire-pit to the size of the piece you want to work and do your work with this !

Well worthwhile effort involved here. By chopping the tree roots you were able to extract the oil using fire, cook your meal, and also collect Charcoal lumps too which produce more heat when fired up for cooking stuff. Nice three legged table or stool at the end. Bravo! BB from the UK

The grain in the roots is quite beautiful-if you have any left would it be suitable for a carving project-a practical item or a decorative element for the cabin? I'm far from an expert but everyone else in the comments is too busy congratulating themselves for getting what's happening to explain it, so I'll try. If I'm not mistaken, he used a long tube because he's distilling turpentine/gas/oil(?). It vaporizes and then cools and turns back into a liquid as it goes through the tube. For the second jar, it's not distillation anymore and is just tar which flows out and doesn't need a tube, but he did it all in one process. So theoretically he could have used a tube out the top for distillation and a separate container at the bottom for tar.

Hey Advoko, this is a really great video and I enjoyed it very much. I liked all the original sounds, most importantly no music (that can be very annoying). Also you reduced the volume when using the angle grinder, my ears thank you for that :-) Perfectly filmed and edited, really like it. The idea of using earth for cooling is also very cool. Cannot understand how people can give you thumbs down, but I guess there'll always be "those guys". Anyways, I'm really glad I subscribed to you. Keep up your great work!

Think both types of video are great (voice over or not), really enjoy just nature's sounds and the music of hand tools and skilled labour.....truely relates the honesty of your endeavours. A little more detail on the process would be appreciated (some volumes, time taken, species of tree, etc...final thoughts, future tweeking/improvements)....but absolutely fine just the way you published it. Won't lie was half expecting you to reach around and paint the oil on with a skinned squirrel or badger (maybe that's just my brutally dark sense of humour). Keep up the great work, thanks for sharing.

When the desired results are not so obvious, an intro section with an overview of the project would be appreciated. The intro could be either spoken or as subtitles. A recap section at the end would let the viewer know if you had met your goals, had any intended future improvements, etc.

Another possible use is to mix the pine tar oil in soap to help with psoriasis and dandruff of the scalp. Don't need large quantities of pine tar oil in the soap either.

@@Advoko : There are commercial anti dandruff and psoriasis shampoos in the USA that contain pine tar. One is Neutrogena T/Gel that is commonly sold. Others are listed on online sources. It works fairly well. There are other types of soaps and shampoos that have different ingredients. Best to switch soaps on occasion to get the best results. I've found the best results are when the medicated soaps and shampoos remain on the skin for longer than five minutes.
