Great video! Just curious the dimensions of your ll bean Huron style snowshoes? Thanks

Great Video Derek! We don't have enough snow to warrant snow shoes here yet, but it is supposed to storm Tuesday, and then more snow Thursday and Friday so we may need them soon!

Brings back memories. I used a pair of them on a school trip when I was about 9 or 10 while I lived in Canada as a child. We went maple syrup collecting in the snow and I remember it as so much fun. Never have used snow shoes since but bet its much harder work now! Cheers Mary

I have watched several of your videos and really enjoy them. My Vermont Tubbs Huron pattern are at least 25 years on. I find them versatile and have probably climbed stuff I shouldn't have. I made one repair to the babiche and is it still holding. Sadly, they are no longer made by VT. I am thinking about getting another pair. Any recommendations on a Michigan/Huron/Maine style? Thanks.

Hey Sarge! I have several pairs of Algonquin Snow Shoes, they are by far the most common around here and cheap used ($30-40). I used to have a set of Odjibwa Snow Shoes when I was a kid. We had Snow Shoe races almost every weekend, I'd win 9 outta 10 races, against guys I couldn't even compete with in track&field at school, loved those snow shoes... I'm not sure when I switched to leather bindings, must be 30 years ago. I don't think I even remember how to tie the lamp wick now...
@sargefaria10 жыл бұрын
trollforge right on bro. good stuff for sure. next video shows "a way" to tie traditional bindings....stay tuned my friend ; )

Nice demo Sarge !! Which one of these snowshoes makes better Trails in the snow ?? What would you put in a Kit for maintaining your Snowshoes ? We always carry an extra pair , cause sometimes , these break and need a quick fix, as we hop along up and down hills and across lakes. what would be good extra's for a Snow shoe repair kit ?? Cheers ;-)

Derek, I just got a pair of USGI Military Snowshoes (Magnesium) just to start out with. I'm not a long distance guy. I think the most I'd trek out would be a few miles with no more than a 40 or 50lb pack for a weekend . It looks like the Bear Paws would be the better option I think for such a short trekking distance and would be ideal once at a camp which would definitely be a more heavily wooded area with day scouts from there. What do you think?

Awesome video! My great uncle just gave me a pair like the beaver tail. Haven't tried them out yet though. Quick question. Are those moccasins that you're wearing? Did you make them and how do you water proof them for the snow?
@sargefaria10 жыл бұрын
NorthernSelfReliance Thanks bud. They are "Steger Mukluks". No I don't make them. They come with a water proofing....though they shouldn't really be worn in wet snow. They are more for the dry cold snow....if that makes sense

I live in New England (NH,Nashua area) For this part of the country up to northern maine and NH vermont what would you recommend as a good style. for all around use?
@sargefaria10 жыл бұрын
Survial9999 Honestly a good "beaver tail" is pretty well versed here. Im in Wakefield NH and do some stuff in Maine as well so. Its not too densely populated to only use the bear paws....though some areas of Maine are. But the beaver tails would do you good for sure

very good intro info. I started snowshoeing 2 years ago. It's a very relaxing sport. I have a set of old beaver tail snowshoes, a pair of USGI magnisum snowshoes, and a pair of modern aluminum frame ones. each has its purpose. But I always start out with the beaver tail ones first. I like those. Can't wait to here your thoughts on the bindings.
@sargefaria10 жыл бұрын
traprmike Thanks bud. Binding vid is uploading shortly

I should of added, I bought the 3 pair for my wife and son also. she likes the modern style. the USGI ones are my son's. but I use them also. I hope more people get into snowshoeing, very relaxing, quiet. Now all I need is more snow in SE MN!!

Why are the bear paws slower than the beaver tails? They should be lighter and more maneuverable
@sargefaria6 жыл бұрын
For the very reasons you state, they are slower. Seems weird, but true. The beaver tails track better

I have been making snowshoes since the early 50,s mostly traditional bearpaw and beavertails for hunting and trapping. today very few pictures are shown of the real traditional beavertail snowshoes which are a floating snowshoes that you wear all day in all type of snow. I am age 81 but still make a few pair for those real hunter or trappers. vincent lavallee

Dude, are those Steger Mukluks ?!?! They look awesome!! I love traditional snowshoes verses modern. I wish we had more powder on a regular basis here in the North East. I have sno-craft traditional trails and love them. Some day I will own a pair of Chestnut traditional Ojibwas. My grandfather used to use bear paws rabbit hunting in the swamps. This brings back some good memories for me, thanks man.....
