Bushcraft is a hobby. Survivalism is a life skill.

I have a friend who teaches survival and woods skills. He calls mindset, skills, tactics/teamwork, and gear the 4 puzzle pieces of survival. And as I thought on it and read true-life events of survival, I came to understand that he pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Interesting to hear your opinion. Here is the thing... People like labels and terms like Bushcraft - Survival - Homesteading, and a whole slew of others that have lost their true definitions and meaning to become wanna-be feel good buzz words. - Bushcraft: Making the things you need from the landscape when in an outdoor setting. - Survival: Continuing your existence each day no matter the circumstances. - Survival situation: Continuing your existence when death could be eminent in the short term up to approximately 72 hrs. - These definitions are concise and to the point... No more, no less. - As to knowledge crossover... Anything you learn on any subject will be applied to new situations as needed. Thanks for the video...

Bushcraft/ woodcraft is making things you need and use off the landscape. Survival is having to use those things so you don’t die if a worst case scenario happens

Survival- 72 hrs VS Bushcraft- indefinite

I would say on average, yes, survival situations last about 72 hours. But we see all the time people getting lost for alot longer. But this is a good starring point to explain. Thanks for sharing!

Great video!! I have often thought alot on this topic and have come to this conclusion. I look at survival as an overall encompassing subject or as like an umbrella so to speak. Under that umbrella, there are many different categories of skillsets that make up the whole. Bushcraft or woodcraft, is one of those. For that matter so is martial arts, hunting, fishing and even disaster preparation and other subjects. So all of these parts effect the goal which is to survive. I know some will say that if they go camping for instance that they are doing it as a hobby and not for survival, mostly for the enjoyment of getting away from the daily grind. Ok, thats cool, but what are you really doing it for, if it is for the mental clearance that you achieve then isn't that helping you survive the grind when you go back to reality. I have seen many video's about bushcrafting and many of those have nothing to do with making what you need off the landscape and they look more like thru-hikers taking everthing they perceive they need. But they still call it bushcraft. So in simple terms the term bushcraft seems to have different meanings for different people. Even Kephart talked about these things in Camping and Woodcraft when the subject of what is the meaning of woodcraft is discussed. Now the survivalist, is not always in the so called situation of being completely without anything. I mean how many survivalists do we really know that don't carry some supplies with them, even if it is nothing but there edc or pocket kit. So if there situation is that of a wilderness or even rural problem then they will definitely be making what is necessary off the landscape or any other landscape for that matter lol. So, then if they are going out into the wilderness environment to practice their survival skill they are in essence bushcrafting because they are making do with what they bring and taking off of the landscape. Sorry for the long post, but I am longwinded and alot of times go around the world to make my point lol. I, in short just see bushcraft as one leg of the survival skillset platform.

I agree that that skills are transferable but the situations are different. Mostly a weekend of doing bushcraft you go home. Trying to survive in a situation you may not get home.

To me bushcraft and survival are very similar. No, they are not mirror images but as you said there is a lot of crossover. Where bushcraft is learning and practicing the skills to create what you need in the field. Survival is using your head to stay calm and rely on what knowledge you have to help you out of your situation. That's where the two cross paths. The more knowledge you have amassed the better your survivability.

Before you get into it. Bushcraft is a good time in bush with tools and skills. Survival is staying alive. I believe the context makes this into Survival is forced Bushcraft. While bushcraft is a choice. Also a modern term for woodscraft or woodsmans skills created in the latter part of the last century. After edit. Oops. I was right again. Although you brought up a few things that I hadn't heard before and I thank you for that. I just find it funny that I'd never heard of Nesmuk or these other 'Greats' before finding out about 'Bushcraft' in 2020, but have been using the same skllls for most of my 50yrs. Most of those skllls taught to me by my father and uncles and playing as a kid. Or learned as a Cub Scout before I was 10. I taught a few of those things to fellow cadets in my teens. But not everyone gets to live in the sticks for most of their young life. Especially in this day and age. Great vid! Thank you!

Enjoyed. PS- I always figured woodcraft skills as another tool in in the survival toolbox, especially wilderness survival. Yes, those skills are an added plus in a situation where death is imminent unless you make an immediate change. Mindset is the greatest tool in the survival toolbox in my opinion.

Most Bushcraft is pure Living History, Reenactment, Role Playing! Definitely some of the traditional skills are very useful in Survival applications. However most modern Bushcrafting is play acting for grown ups!

Survival vs Bushcraft ( a bit cynical) Survival: You unexpectedly find yourself in the 'wilderness' (or in a place you find unpleasant) and want to quickly return to civilization, either on your own or by drawing attention to yourself. Colors: Orange, red, yellow... always as bright and 'loud' as possible Bushcraft: You escape into the 'wild' and develop the skills of the 'ancients'. Naturally with maximum comfort, hightech equipment and gourmet food. All this while not being disturbed or discovered by anyone. Colors: Brown, green, gray and/or mixed... always covert and invisible.

An old Mm8 of mine, Chris Caine came up with these definitions!... Bush craft is camping with crafts , survival is being put into a situation in which you're not familiar with but you have prepared for it.....ATB

It’s all semantics nowadays. The waters are too muddied. Bushcraft in itself is not even originally a North American term if you choose to dig in deep. Just go enjoy the outdoors and learn how to do it comfortably for you. And stay away from the KZbinrs who treat going to the woods like they’re surviving a military insurgence.
