Off Grid Wood Shed ....... start to finish

Firewood is the ONLY fuel you can heat your house with that doesn't require buying "fuel" of some kind from a supplier. But, everyone who burns wood needs a place to store, and dry their firewood. Today we'll build a small wood shed at our off grid cabin in central Alaska.

We used to say that wood warms you 3 times--when you cut it, when you split it, and finally, when you burn it. Splitting wood in the winter is a good way to work up a sweat.

*Don't forget stacking it boys. The variation I've heard is it warms you 4 times, when you cut it, split it, stack it, and burn it. Might have to upgrade it to 5 with the embers warming your soul haha 😅

Dave.... We have been talking about building a small shed for our wood. We've been burning wood for 47 years.... & still haven't built one! We cover our woodpile with heavy tarps. I am 70 and my hubby will be 68 soon, so I guess we will continue to use tarps! Your woodshed, rock garden and firepit area are fantastic! Thank You for another great video! With a little help you could probably build a shed. I'm 68 and built one just like this by myself. I would have appreciated a helper but none was available, so I just went at it, and it turned out fine. On the other hand, tarps work great, too, and there's no climbing involved! Enjoyed this wood shed build. A very much needed building. I was surprised that the sides are so low. I hear with a good size wood stove but have never had a wood shed. In the last 9 years, I should have had one built . It would have kept the wood from rotting and would have saved space. I should have sent Brooke a carrier pigeon note and pleated, " please come to Central Okla. To help me on a little project". The pay ain't good but we could laugh a lot. LOL. I've built several for family and friends over the years... I usually go about 2/3 up the sides w/ planks and have a 2" gap btwn them for air flow.

That structure is so versatile, you could do anything with it. I built my workshop, my bathroom and a roof over my caravan and one day will pull it out and enclose it as my main house.

Thanks, Dave. I built a woodshed almost identical to yours a few years ago - also all by myself with just hand tools - though I did use a cordless driver and screws instead of hammer and nails. I'd never built anything like that before and basically made it up as I went along. And it turned out great. The one thing I found came in most handy was a set of clamps to hold boards in place while I screwed them. Besides not being very strong any more (I'm 68), I have a pinched nerve in my neck and the arm on that side is only about 50% as strong as the other. I remembered that I had the clamps after getting hit in the head exactly the same way you did. I swore a lot more than you did, too. After that, things went a lot better. For sinking the the posts I used a Fiskars post hole digger, which works the opposite way of yours -- that is, you push the handles together instead of pulling them apart. I can't use a regular post hole digger because of my injury but the Fiskars model (The shafts cross to form like an "X") made the job do-able for me and I'd prefer it even if I could use a traditional one. The posts I secured in place by tamping the dirt down with a board and hammer after every six inches or so. The posts are completely solid and plumb today, three years later. I don't believe it's necessary to put concrete in the post holes for a project like this, but that's just my personal belief based on my experience. Anyhow, thanks for the video and I'd encourage anyone who has wanted to try a project like this to go ahead and give it a shot. It doesn't need to be perfect and as long as it's reasonably square and your posts are secure in the ground, you should be fine. Thanks again to Dave for this and all of his videos.

That is one smart log shed Dave. I fear my log chopping days are behind me, for now, but I wish I'd thought of that tyre log holder! What a time saver. We used to have mostly oak, olive and pine logs on our property, made for some very hot and beautiful smelling fires. And I soon learnt to wear a hard hat in that sort of a situation, after a similar incident! I guess the heat won out? Another fine video.

Newbie here. My husband and I were stationed at Elmendorf AFB Anchorage in the 80s and 90s and still travel back up the Al-Can to visit with our daughters who chose to remain in Alaska. We know what you mean about the rocks, it's pure labor intense. When our kids were small I had the bright idea of installing a chainlink fence to at least keep the kids inside the fence. However the moose couldn't care less, they just stepped over it. 😊 All those rocks made during the ice age when the glaciers were slowly grinding down stone leaving behind end moraine. Back to the fence, we tried using an auger to drill the fence posts, not a good idea. We barely made it 5-6 inches deep and the auger itself stopped cold and jerked the motor end to spinning crazy! Nearly broke my wrist. We decided to just get on our hands and knees and dug the holes by hand. Never again! Learned a good lesson.

I need to build a wood shed to, but the snow here on the western slope is wet and very heavy.I will need to put at least a 6/12 pitch to keep it from crushing! Hi Dave, one point you missed on metal roofing. The roof I live under was installed 40+ years ago and not a single leak. It is about time I went up there and replaced the tech screws because those gaskets don't last forever but so far so good. BTW the mention of rain hitting the metal roof is so true, hail gets a bit loud if the stone get bigger but still nothing to fret about.

I just bought 18.55 acres of bare land, no well and that is exactly what I am going to do, cover over my 2, 2100 gal tanks and water catchment system, I live in the desert! Buy yourself a Pulaski. A handtool used by firefighters that combines an axe head for cutting roots with an adze for digging in rocky soil. Would make hole digging and stump removing easier while also saving your ax. Love the channel. Keep the great content coming!

I like your low tech tips (even the ones you just show but don't talk about) and the junk yard pick up tools (or equivalent) doing 80 percent of the job. Also, heavy equipment is great but it's not always available. A pick and a shovel are always available.

Yeah, that’s a super nice wood shed, but love having a wood shed. We ve had massive oak trees blowing down in hurricanes and wind shears here in north Louisiana. Also had to add hoop trampoline with tarp. We had so much. Thank God we have a wood splitter that is also in the wood barn to split those 28 inch wide logs, it feels like wrestling a bull into position to split. Always love your content and practical applications to necessary structures. By the way it’s 102 in the shade today. No work for us senior citizens.
