Aw few things - I highly doubt this is the actually the location of where he harvests the mud. If you've read articles on this topic, he's been very cagey, in a good humored way, about the location or when people question what he's doing if they see him on the river. I highly doubt he would have brought a news crew to the site when he wouldn't even reveal it to his wife until after they were married. Second, yes he sells it and it is $25 for personal use, which is a half a pound. Let's consider that a dozen game use baseballs is around $50. Only a small amount of mud is needed to treat each baseball. A jar would likely treat numerous dozens of baseballs. Baseballs are made in Costa Rica, likely for pennies each. This guy carries buckets of mud by hand, strains it numerous times and packages it by hand. And his income from this venture annually, $12,000. I'm more than shocked that some major company hasn't approached him to package this for sale at Dicks or other retail avenues. Maybe they have and he isnt interested. Third, how do we know he collects mud on public lands? Again, I doubt the video is shot where he actually harvests. How do we know he doesnt know a land owner that grants him access? Even if it is public land, are we reallt going to get pissy over a guy collecting mud on a small scale, Karen? Its not like he's out there with bulldozers and taking 4 tons of mud a day. Lastly, and this is probably the most important. These baseball players complaining about baseballs. This mud treatment has been used since the 1950s and now it's the problem? No, the problem is that baseball today values pitching velocity above all all. There are far too many pitchers in high level minors and even trickling into the MLB that can throw 95-100mph, but have an entire lack of control. These guys cannot locate a pitch, they just throw hard. And when they have an outing where they lack command or hit a guy they blame the baseball. I don't ever remember Greg Maddux complain about baseballs. Why? Because Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine were pitchers. Today we have throwers.

A lot of states have water rights, which means that any water sources are considered public and available to anyone that wants to access it. Likely the harvest locations may have limited access if anyone goes by truck to those locations, so it would make sense. I agree with your comment on the pitchers vs throwers. The accuracy of previous generations are/were unparalleled. Todays professional players throw hard but lack the ball control. It also has affected the quality of our current day pitchers since the amount of surgeries and injuries on pitchers have skyrocketed. Why would you ask? For starters, they throwing too hard for what their bodies can handle; secondly, these guys are using throws that are killing their elbows.

Also, I just wanted to make a separate comment just to say I Used to play baseball for 14 years starting at the age of 5. Those were the best years in my life. I just wanted to say this is amazing content brings back memories for me as well. I saw a similar video years ago pretty much on This same subject But I do have to say even though this video was about the same time as the other this one gave a lot more details in background along with the personal interview and Harvesting the mud. The other video Only showed the process in the garage and shifting the mud. All in all good content andthank you for the nostalgic feelings.

Location of the mud: 40°29'17"N 74°25'22"W He used the mud from the Raritan river, at Donaldson Park, a large baseball park next to the river. In the video you can see the boat launch off from the park. The bridge seen in the video is the Donald Goodkind bridge.

Why post the location? That land is public land. It's park land. Thus that mud isn't theirs to sell. That family is making money selling something that isn't theirs to sell. It's no different than loggers stealing trees from a state park to sell.

I live on the Delaware river in New York and when I was a kid, I used to collect the mud for my travel teams. We’d use the mud to dirty up our new baseballs for games. The mud was runny and pudding-like, just like the mud in this video. Probably not exactly the same, but similar.

I need everyone's honest opinion, please and thank you! At the 3 minute mark, both of the guys said "Cha-ching!" and laughed. Question is: Do you think when the both said "Cha-Ching!" at the same time was that planned and rehearsed?
