Feel terrible for her, but when things get tight it becomes food, clothing and shelter for the family. Nothing left after that.

My business went to the wall last year, directly because of Tory policy. They've created a country that is too hostile for small businesses to survive. I'll never try and start another business here.

When business rates destroy businesses one would hope that government would draw some form of sensible conclusion.

True, I was helping my ex-girlfriend open a shop around 14 years ago and we had to do alot of renovation inside the shop before we even thought about opening for business. Our council sent the business rates bill to us within a week of us getting the keys and it was over £2500 , they wanted it within 12 weeks too ! . I argued it was impossible as we had only enough to pay for 3 months rent (paid) and to pay them monthly . We had to pull out as she didn't have enough to pay the theiving sods . That shop then sat vacant for over a year . Business rates CRIPPLE small businesses. There NEEDS to be help to keep our shops going and keep people coming into the area generating more income for the local economy .

@@gpo746 Small buisness steals profits from the conglomerations that give us all a decent life. As an American, I know this better than anyone. I just wish my country would hurry up and finish removing guns from the poor already. A person's ability to own weapons should be directly influenced by how much stock they hold in the current ruling party. Oh, and God Bless The King.

@@gpo746 It's not councils choice, if the government slash the central grant but increase a councils responsibilities. Councils are only allowed to keep a portion of rates, the rest goes to government who then decide how much to give back to the council by way of the central grant.

Such lovely dedicated people in such traumatic circumstances. They're doing their best to keep afloat but the economic situation is tough and they simply cannot afford to continue unless they get some support. Great Britain is in a lot of financial difficulties. Whether these business owners can ' hang in there' time will tell.

Interesting when The Times generally supports the government that created this situation. Maybe they could have given the fee paid for the sadly piano music to a business owner instead.

The really bad thing is that once these small businesses close, who would take a chance and start a small business again knowing something like an energy crisis will put them under because the government isn't going to step in and help them? This situation will create a small business apocalypse

Tax money doesn't go to supporting the public services that the culture ignorantly believes are important. No, your tax money merely services the interest on government debt. And barely makes that. So how are the public services payed for? More government debt is created to which more interest becomes due. Can you see the downward spiral here? If you can't see that as a problem, then no one can help you. When it comes to the moral role for government, it has to be limited to protecting your liberty and property. Nothing more. Get them out of everything else. This is not what the culture wants, and therefore you have the outcomes of what you've advocated.

Plants on pots etc -- it's not a business so much as a trendy gimmick, same types of shops last only a short time in NZ. You must have a spread of products that people need to survive in retail.

The Times пишет: Sunak set for No 10 as Johnson quits race Boris Johnson pulled out of the Conservative leadership contest yesterday, paving the way for Rishi Sunak to become Britain’s next prime minister. Johnson accused Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, who is also standing for the party leadership, of failing to come together in the national interest after they rebuffed his attempts to strike a deal.
