I used to work in a Naval Shipyard and witnessed many test explosions as in the opening of this video. What was strange is that the test barge would attract hundreds of sea gulls, sitting on it during the countdown. When the count got down to about 10 seconds, all the seagulls would take off and fly away from the barge. After the massive explosion, the seagulls would return and harvest the fish killed by the explosion. The question is, how did the sea gulls know to take off just before the explosion?

I've been asking the same thing. In Asia, we got a lot of natural disaster, especially the one involving ring of fire around Pacific. Every time a volcanic eruption's about to happen, animals like tiger, snake, panther, puma would go down from the mountain into urban areas despite no other signs before the eruption, they'll refrain themselves from eating one another or harm humans. Just insanely expensive from build, to maintainance over life, and manning it with 5000 crew basically. Actually, the US Army is the second largest Air Force, with the Navy taking up the number 5 spot. You have to remember that helicopters also count as aircraft, so despite the Army not operating a significant number of fixed-wing aircraft, it has a very large number of helicopters, in fact more helicopters than Russia has aircraft at all.

Having worked for a major military contractor for over 40 years, I can tell you that the cost overruns are firmly the fault of incompetent government employees who keep moving the goalposts. We'll happily change the goalposts but it's not going to be cheap. They don't care. It's just taxpayer money.

Another reason not mentioned in the video for the “cost” of a carrier and why other countries don’t even have them is the support vessels that go with it. A carrier strike group usually has at least one cruiser, a couple destroyers, a frigate or two, X submarines, X supply boats, and X logistic ships in addition to its aircraft. Simply put, operating one of these ships by itself is extremely expensive and requires a lot of support and protection. Also, as a practical standpoint, a lot of countries also do not have any ambitions which require global force projection. For example, despite the size of China’s navy, it is design for operation in the Asian-pacific region and they simply do not have the ships or resources to create a fleet capable of global power projection.

I think what this overlooks is that the carriers we’ve been using were designed and built in the 1970s. Yes, the Ford class is an ambitious undertaking, but when you haven’t produced a new class of carrier in 46 years (not counting Nimitz subclasses) you do end up with a backlog of improvements and upgrades that you want to design, test, and implement. The Ford’s aren’t perfect, but they’re definitely a necessary step towards keeping our navy modernized and effective.

When I was in the Army, we use to look down on the Navy, for a multitude of reasons, but the one we joked about the most was their lack of "military bearing", and informal nature with one another, going by first names and often joking it operated more like a company then a military force. I love this baby carrier! I have used many wraps in the past and decided to purchase a baby carrier with better support. It’s extremely comfortable and has great support while I go on walks. This is a popular misconception because most of our annual budget is spent on quality of life improvements, not bombs or rockets - in fact it only accounts for a little more then 10-15% of it. This is easily confirmed by looking at any mandatory spending pie chart on the internet, congress commissions em all the time. In fact, we spend more on education, health and pensions on an individual basis then we do the military. That carrier may be big and overcomplicated... but our budget is simply massive

There is no such thing as over-charging, such a belief implies a severe misunderstanding of the concept of value. The fact that people are willing to pay so high for such services doesn't mean they are "over-charged", but that they are genuinely worth such a value; hence why the price is paid in the first place. It is quite literally logistically impossible to "over-charge" someone on a voluntary transaction, because elsewise the transaction simply would not occur.

Yes, and that Air Strip is a fixed target. Even more problematically, there may not BE an Air Strip in a friendly country available close enough to where you want to operate. They are also subject to Natural Disasters and need to be built, maintained and supplied. Aircraft Carriers are a Swing Force. They can be deployed in one area but rapidly deployed to another area, even one where there are no friendly nations nearby. They are also Sovereign Territory not dependent upon a Host Nation, who may withdraw their support, as Turkey did in the 2003 Iraq War.

Hiring in-house didn't stop the Soviets from keeping pace. There's a reason the AK-47 and RPG-7 are preferred over the M16 and M72 even today. The government once upon a time used to snap up the best and brightest scientists and engineers, making weapons much cheaper than today. Now it's ridiculously large contracts for sub-par weaponry.

I was in the Navy as An HT on a Destroyer we had the VCHT design we had Fwd/Aft VCHT. If you had good HTs the system would still go down because of people flushing other things besides human waste in the toilets. I remember the whole Fwd end of the ship toilets going down because someone flushed a brown paper towel and it caused one of the rubber flaps to stay open causing constant vacuum pressure to be lost. The only way we found out was by bringing the while front end of the comodes down, we had to do a whole lot of paperwork every time the system went down to repair the issue and get the captains permission to even begin. If one of the pumps overheated or lost oil or broke a mechanical seal because of the paper towel or other junk in the system it would take even longer to repair. From my point of view of being an HT. The VCHT system is awesome when used properly and only human waste is flushed down the comodes. Its the crew who need to be reminded only human waste can be flushed down the comodes. I pulled rags, and paper towels out of that system. And don't even get me started on urinals. HT 2 (SW) Zavala USN 2009-2013.
