I saw this fight with my Dad too at a Chinese restaurant at the small bar while we were waiting for a table. We watched every Tyson fight together but when this one came around it was supposed to be such a bad fight we didn’t bother...so it happened to be on at the bar and there was the small dinner crowd of about 20 people all crammed into the bar eating Chinese food and GOING NUTS as the fight went on!! I could only imagine if we saw it at a larger sports bar. Everyone there knew Tyson was in Serious trouble by the 6th round... but when BD got knocked down we all thought he was done. Needless to say when BD got up and knocked Tyson down and out in the 10th the place went batshit crazy!! Great memory!! I was 18 then and my dad died in 2009.

This fight is considered to be one of the biggest upsets in sports history, but in my opinion it's the greatest! At the time, people considered Mike Tyson to be an unstoppable invincible force of nature, especially after the Marvis Frazier fight. Not a single soul believed that Buster Douglas had even a chance of winning. Most men who were betting on the fight weren't betting on who would win, but on what round Mike Tyson would win by KO! Yet Buster Douglas managed to win through the determination he got from his mother! He truly shocked the world!

Never had any money or gambled but I put a quid on Buster. I knew he would be motivated and Tyson nearly lost to Tillis. I never believed the hype. Old ring rusty Holmes (who was just on it for the cash) and an old light heavy with bad knees in Spinks did not cut it for me.

I recall reading or hearing a post-fight comment from Douglas where he said his camp figured out that the much-shorter Tyson would set, then lunge forward “like a frog” to throw a big hook. Douglas had trained to step back out of the way when he saw that, then counterpunch. Douglas’ heart was a big factor here, but he also had a smart strategy that took advantage of his reach and size. That is often overlooked. Tyson was a terrific heavyweight, one of the all-time greats, and it took everything being done right to defeat him.

I remember watching this fight with my father when it aired. Dad fell asleep moments before it happened and I woke him up screaming, "Tyson got knocked down!" He looked like a disbelieving ghost being woken up to that shocking news. Tyson was on a tear that no one believed could be stopped.

Nobody really talks about how *he lasted 10 rounds* with the beast himself, *Mike Tyson.* 🔥💪🏽 And, you can see at the end when Mike gave him that straight up *”I’m not done yet mf, we’ll see each other again”* look 😂💯 I’d be *terrified* if Mike were to literally just *look at me crazy* like that…

From Rummy's Corner video about the fight: “One thing I’ve learned after years of being a boxing fan, is that greatness sometimes manifests in different ways and varying capacities. Buster Douglas may not be remembered as an all time great heavyweight, but on that one fateful night in Tokyo, he truly was greatness personified.”
@michaelwainscott2633
@michaelwainscott2633 Жыл бұрын
The stars aligned, Douglas had the reach, the jab and the fortitude unlike any fight he fought before. Mike Tyson brought the best out in Douglas, and Tyson was obviously not focused in his preparation. Still, a great fight by the huge underdog Buster who could have quit after being almost knocked out in Round 8, but he didn't fight scared. He sensed he could win and the longer the fight went on, his confidence grew after being saved by a long count and the bell. The rest is history. Greatest upset in boxing history.
