Debunk of myth #3 is false. There is actually a difference in boat speed depending on the wind orientation. You can easily check it with a mod like ESP. Though the difference is not luch between tailwind and cross-tail wind is not much, the difference can go up to -30% speed with a cross-head wind (i.e. only 6m/s instead of 9m/s for instance !) you can actually see this difference in wind efficiency with the brightness of the sailong circle. Orientations which provides most efficiency is brigter, and darker angles shows where you lose the most efficiency.
@SpazzyjonesGaming3 ай бұрын
This isn't quite my understanding. I believe there is an optimal angle which yields slightly faster speeds of about 3% but it's negligible. The difference between the 6 and 9 m/s is from the intensity of the wind which is dependent on the weather not the direction. That's how I understand it anyhow
@DanLo-tube3 ай бұрын
@@SpazzyjonesGaming the 3% difference is "from crosswind to tailwind", but you get wind starting at cross-head wind (front diagonals). => the difference is significative at the moment the winds is anything above crosswind, while you need to remove the sail only for headwind.
@DanLo-tube3 ай бұрын
@@SpazzyjonesGaming the values speak for themselves from the longship wiki : 100% tailwind: 9.5 m/s 100% crosswind: 9.5 m/s 100% cross-tailwind: 9.75 m/s 100% head-crosswind: 6.2 m/s

So, is the wind being perpendicular to your boat faster than it being directly behind you? I know in real sailing, most sailboats use the wind in a way that their boats sail faster when wind comes from the side, but I wondered if it was the case in Valheim. I assume that it IS the case since the sailing wheel UI presents the brightest wind symbol when wind is perpendicular to the boat, but dimmer when it comes from behind or from in front.
@DanLo-tube3 ай бұрын
@@AeyakS almost, if I remember correctly it is brighter in the rear diagonals (so cross-tail wind), which is indeed where you have the most speed. But as said correctly in previous comments and in the video, the difference between perpendicular (crosswind), rear diagonals (cross-tail) and rear (tail) is quite low difference is significant only when the wind starts to be even a little in front of you

TBH giving deer a sense of smell would be very cool because it would give the wind indicator another use outside of sailing. You'd have to approach from down wind or they'll run off.

I watched it, tested it myself, and they sure don't anymore, but I could almost swear to you that it was at one point. It very well could've been greydwarves or something else spooking them that I was unaware of though. I don't have any one vivid enough memory or recording to confirm yes/no under proper test conditions, but it would be nice if that was a thing, not necessarily for all mobs but some, like deer.

I'm curious how you tested the terraforming myth to debunk it. I've been playing for years and while the old update did significantly improve things major terraforming still causes a performance drop in multiplayer settings. I'm not talking about smoothing out the ground for base building, but digging trenches and pitfall traps. Digging out basements, etc I've seen it firsthand too many times on the big servers I've played on where restoring original terrain clears up performance issues. Too many builds having too be abandoned because of moats.
@SpazzyjonesGaming3 ай бұрын
I haven't tested it myself but others have and covered performance more in depth than I have. I'd encourage searching for videos on lag in valheim to get a second or third opinion on it. For instance, channels like JPValheim and Ninebyte have some great videos on lag in the game . Hopefully those can help :)

#3 - assuming you don't use Moder... you will often be much better off "tacking" across the wind instead of paddling into it. Unless of course the wind is pretty calm. Having sailed small boats IRL, Valheim actually does a pretty good job modeling this. Am hoping for a sailing skill that will improve top sail speed, acceleration, and turn speed.

Note that arrows make noise when they land on ground. You can abuse this if there is a creature that is abauth to spot you. You can fire arrow into direction away from you and sound will cause this creature to follow it. There is a limit how far it can be heared. Also a lot of attacks in this game dont even have to be dodged. You can avoid 95% of them by just steping back a bit when a creature makes the attack and this creature attack has range. Troll with tree in hand cant realy be dodged by doing back, but you can strafe left or right and avoid it and save stamina. You just gota time it right. Oh and funny thing. If you have a bad wind, simply 180* your boat to it and instead of going straight, just go back and you will go much faster.
