Cut an x into the head of rivet with a cutoff wheel. Makes this much faster and saves your chisels.
@mikeduhm5325
@mikeduhm5325 2 жыл бұрын
As mentioned cut an X in the head. Get one of the rivit cutter chisel bits. It's sharpened like a wood chisel and has a small offset bend so it lays flush with the frame. If the rivits are long, going thru thick or multiple plates, drilling a hole will make them drive out much easier.

Pro tip!! Cut a V into the chisel and then sharpen it you won’t have to fight with it trying to jump off each side while your hammering

I've got an old CP air hammer, probably 40 years old. Still works great. I cross cut the heads of the rivets with an angle grinder and cutoff wheel. They chisel off much easier

Rivets work harden. You can get or sharpen the chisel to a V . Yes they spread and break, but do stay put. Remember the anvil flatten and the springs lose their zing. Maybe time to rebuild.

I've also used the sharpened chisel bit on my air hammer to cut off welds that are located in such a way where it wasn't feasible to get at them with a grinder.

We used this method in the mid 1970's on ball joints....they were riveted to the control arms and the replacements were bolt in

A faster way is to start with the chisel and create the initial groove in the rivet. But then switch to a Sawzall with a carbide bit metal blade (a long blade) into the groove you made, and it will cut the rivet head off like a champion really fast.

Sharpening tip: keep the bit cool, don't wear gloves, hand will let you know when the heat builds up long before you get to ruin the temper, if it's to hot too handle, dip it in oil to cool it off. Usually quite often.

Ive had luck cutting an "X" in the head of the rivet. My father in law has heated them up with a torch and knocked them clean through and replaced with grade 8 bolts. Different application and more of a rust repair. Wish every frame looked like a Texas truck lol

Because I don't have as nice of an air hammer as yours. I have to do a little bit of a different method. I use a drill bit and just barely remove a little material. Not enough to even go through the head of the rivet. But it's just enough where my air hammer can then break off the head.

That is definitely a way to remove a rivet. Not a first choice, or even like a 5th choice, but sometimes you gotta cut one in a stupid tiny space or somewhere you cant get a die grinder.... But... Why you wouldn't just grind em off out there in the wide open is absolutely beyond me.
