Shade gardens are my favorite. I grew up in a house with a lot of large trees so I guess they remind me a bit of my childhood. I grew Persian Shield for the first time in a container this year and was very pleased with it. I love your combination with the elephant ears! I'm a total sucker for that tropical look.

That was quite pleasurable & relaxing, yet also mentally stimulating. I too have more shade than when we 1st moved here. Thanks for the inspiration to dig, divide & transplant a few things. My dark green Liriope doesn't bloom anymore & where it is, it looks like a clump of overgrown grass. My variagated Liriope hasn't bloomed in a few years either. It's the only one that survived. I'd built a dry stacked flat, native stone raised, curved bed, & planted alternating Variegated Liriope & Palace Purple Heuchera. Most have died. Do they need feeding or a more alkaline soil maybe?

Hi Yuliya, Thank you for a glimpse of your shaded garden. Everything looks perfect, love that you explain in detail the ins and outs of your selections. I didn't realize that the elephant ears grow in shade, loved the one called "coffee cups". The Persian shield can it winter over outside? I think I will be shopping for the caladiums, they were beautiful. Those I know (because of you) definitely need to come inside in late fall. Do you have help maintaining your garden, or do you do it all by yourself? Enjoy your videos, thank you so much. Jersey Ann from NJ ☺🍀🌿🌸🌺🌻

Lots of great ideas. I’ve struggled w a part shade bed under my river birch tree for years. Watching your videos I’m realizing now that I’m actually lucky to get sedums, peonies, lavender & geraniums to grow there, everything else shrivels up and meets its maker. I’ll have to try some of your plant combinations which I love, but it’s also a super dry location no matter how much I water so not sure what will work. Oh did I mention we get regular visits from deer and rabbits? Not sure why I don’t just give up already? 😂

River Birch! You are my hero! I have three and the only plants that grow under them are: euonymus, pachysandra, boxwood, Kerria japonica, ajuga and not much else. I planted some stuff in planters tho and those are doing ok. Watering under birches is a must.

Y Garden I think I’m like you, delusional about the amount of light and conditions I have, haha. See plant, would like to have plant, plant said plant in and empty spot and say a prayer! Sometimes I just get lucky but if you knew the number of plants that have died or vanished from my beds you would not call me a hero. 😂. I’m learning though! I do a lot of musical plants these days, at least moving them around until something sticks. Thanks for your videos, I always look forward to them. My grandmother was part Russian, so I have 1/16th Russian in me. :)

Oh and I forgot to mention, as if it’s not hard enough I have a kidney shaped bed and am married to the idea of having a symmetrical composition there. I.e. one or two of the same plant on each side!! And it’s on a 45 degree bend in the middle which means 2 different lighting situations!!! Signed, Sincerely, Neurotic gardener 🤓

Do you have any other perennials to suggest for dry shade besides heuchera, ferns, wood asters and solomon seal? Ah, great video! So helpful. Yuliya, I have a situation this year that I haven't had before. We took down a large oak tree. And now two areas that were once mostly shade are now part shade. But not the kind of part shade where most shade plants will still grow: The areas get the strongest sun of the day, from about noon til about 3pm. It's too much for shade plants, and too little for plants that really need full sun to thrive. I know a few plants that can probably take that situation, but not many. I don't know if you have an area like this and could do a whole video on it? But I would love that.
@greatgardensforall

Interesting! I have an area that is most shade but get strong afternoon sun after 2pm. Plants that do ok there are echinacea, rose of sharon, clethra, some heucheras, joe pye weed, tree peony. Some other plants that will do well are boxwoods, yews, ninebark to name a few. Basically you look for plants that will do ok in the shade but tolerate sun.

maybe.... with the shady patch. could it be army grubs with the orange heads? try strong soapy water (whashing powder or liquid, in a watering can) and if that's what it is, they should rise out of the grass within the hour for the birds to eat or to pick up by hand. it looks a lot like something is eating the roots of the grass just there. .... perhaps.....

Thanks, Yula. We have a lot of humidity, around 70 to 85% most of the time, especially in summer! Since it’s so small and we’re going into fall, do you think I need to repot it in a larger pot with plant tone? I also have a pink climbing hydrangea that’s done the same thing. I think I have a lot of repotting to do! When I order plants they usually send 4” pots. I can’t bring myself to put those babies into the soil because it’s so bad.i have a closed in back porch with a wall of windows facing south and I put a lot of my pots there during winter! Things winter over beautifully. Thank you so much for you’re advice and concern! 😁😉

@@greatgardensforall It's all good. Hey, I noticed the Persian Shield seems less iridescent in (which is it?) sunnier areas or shadier areas? And they're an annual right? I'd *definitely* bring that in as a house plant. It's beautiful.

Yes, it has more coloring in brighter location. I tried to overwinter but was unsuccessful (and I overwinter a lot of stuff). I think they really didn't like low humidity in the house. Will try again tho

@@greatgardensforall Yeah, we know you overwinter a *lot* of stuff since you told us your husband was like " *Yulia! Get these plants out of the house NOW* " Ha ha ha ha. But just so I'm clear, it's more iridescent (and has more of the deep, beautiful purple) in *less* light or *more* light? I've noticed it looking more silvery in more light (and I don't like that look). Thanks. Love the videos. Please keep 'em coming.

Lovely garden. Have you suggestions for plants for zone 4? Too many deer eating hostas, so I have planted hellebores, astilbes, bleeding hearts, brunnera. What is hardy enough to survive our very cold and long winters here in central Ontario?

Maybe try some of these: Solomon's seal, pulmonaria, goats beard, tiarella (I especially love 'Running Tapestry), bergenia, cimicifuga. I love finding and growing unusual plants in the garden. Good luck!

I would take those peonies out of there and move them where there is more sun and space to "breathe"

The tree is taking all of the water so that's why the grass can't grow. It's too dry.
