I used to feel so overwhelmed by trying to keep the house clean. It felt pointless since it got dirty again so fast. I now just clean as needed. If I see a spot on the cabinet, I clean the spot or just that one cabinet, not try to clean the entire kitchen like i used to do when I saw a dirty cabinet. Just clean what you see is dirty every day until you have time to do the whole thing. That has saved my sanity. If my island needs wiping down, I do it, not every surface in the kitchen. If the bathroom mirror is spotty, I clean it, not the entire counter, faucet, etc. Seems silly but when I was a kid, my mom was always cleaning the WHOLE HOUSE all the time.

I bet it wasn’t dirty just untidy which is noooooooormal if you have children. If no children a lot of it is just putting away things once done with them..forming habits that keep a tidy home

That’s exactly what I do. Basically clean as I go. And when something is screaming to clean me, I’ll do it then and there. I have grown children, but two had moved back. The house still gets messy.

My best cleaning habit in my kitchen is along the lines of "not much is better than nothing:" using "boil time." If I'm waiting for water to boil (or waiting for anything, like the microwave), I clean my kitchen instead of sitting at the table or messing around on my phone. Emptying the dishwasher takes surprisingly little time when you're racing against 60 seconds on the microwave. It's easier to do this than most cleaning tasks, executive function-wise, because there's a strict, short, visible time limit to the task and that time is already categorized in my mind as "not enough to get anything done," so there's no pressure to be perfect or productive with it because it's just "bonus time."

Put a laundry basket or a large Ikea bag in your car. Then the backpacks, your bag, etc goes in the basket. It's like a landing zone for your car. Everything goes in and it's easy to unload the car in one run. I used to keep three rectangular laundry baskets in my trunk for when I did a grocery run. Then I got a smaller one for my front seat. It also acts as a visual clue...if there is only one backpack and there's supposed to be two, you notice it quicker. Hopes this helps.

Great tips! Since nothing is one size fits all for organization, I'll share my decanting thoughts. I only decant if it makes my life more efficient. To me, decanting cereal into containers makes no sense as the containers take up pretty much as much room as the boxes, but i do take them out of the boxes and leave them in the bags in a bin of "breakfast" items which takes less room. Same with crackers. But, I will absolutely take granola bars out of their boxes and put them in one bin so they are easier to grab. I won't decant like chocolate chips, raisins or the like into jars/containers, but will put the bags of them in a "baking" bin. This makes things so much easier for me personally:)
@margaretlake

I like decanting because the containers are easier to organize. But I did find one big flaw in decanting. I decant all my meds because I have a hard time opening those prescription bottles. I got bottles from the $Tree and labeled them with the name of the med and the time to take them. Here's the problem. I get OTC meds from different stores and sometimes I can't remember what online store I bought them at. Next time, I'll add a label naming the store.

I only decant if it will all fit in the container and will be there long enough to need the extra preservation. My rice takes forever to go through and I hate the flimsy bags so yes...chips, heck no! They decant directly into my mouth. 😅

I agree about the decanting, and for another reason: I decant into mason jars which I love so I no longer have bags and boxes "marketing" to me (aka yelling at me) every time I open the cupboard. It is so much calmer for the soul.

I love my Tupperware Modular Mates for just this reason! They're perfect for in the pantry and cabinets and can be used EVERYWHERE in the home, car, and garage or storage shed! Yes, they're pricey, but you pay for them once, and they come with a warranty that kicks in even if they're 59 years old.

Decanting can really save space. Case in point: herbal teas that aren't individually wrapped. (e.g. Celestial Seasonings) If you cut off the front of the box, it fits perfectly in a snack-sized zipper bag, with the tea bags behind it. You can "file" the bags in a plastic bin, and it takes up *so* much less space than the boxes. Plus, it's easy to see when you're nearly out of a particular flavor.
@Romans828girl

Love the tip about keeping some "free space" when decluttering. I made the mistake many times by decluttering and then organizing things and filling the space only to have to figure out a completely new system when new items came into the house and wouldn't fit any of the containers. I now try and keep at least one shelf in every cupboard/closet completely free, for those future incoming items. I also love the idea of the weekly home reset. Thank you as always for all of your tips :)

whenever i come out of a depression phase or workaholic phase my daily goal is just do ‚one up‘ the day, organize one more thing than i used, clean one more thing than i used. sometimes it will only be that one thing, sometimes it gets me into a few hours cleaning spree. give it a few weeks and afterwards it will be enough to do 30 minutes cleaning and organizing daily again 😊

Your tip on taking everything out of your car every night is a super great tip. I wish I would've done that. It would've made my life so much easier. My car was always a mess when my kids were growing up. I worked a full time plus a part time job and had kids on top of it and no husband as he had committed suicide and left me to pick up the pieces. We live in a cold most of the time climate and I was just tired. I always had a million reasons why I just couldn't pick up one more thing for someone unable or unwilling to pick it up for themselves. Anyway I wish I had this video back then. Maybe I would've listened. 😢

Ive made myself fold my clothes and put them on hangers and straight away as soon as they come out of the dryer, if i don't have time then they sit in the dryer so I can fluff them before they come out cause I can't just put things in my drawers messy cause it makes stress for me. Also if I know i can't get that one load out asap i will not start washing another load.

One of my mantras is "go with what you know." If I walk into a room and it's a mess and I don't know where to start, start with what is obvious to you and whittle the job down. You are then left with things that don't have a home (what you don't know), but it will feel like there really isn't so much of it and it's manageable. I do wonder what to do when you have a spouse who isn't bothered by clutter. My husband is collects books, collects tools, and collects kitchen gadgets (he does most of the cooking). It drives me nuts. I suggested building a second pantry in an unused corner of the dining room. He filled it with books! He put the "pantry" items into bins and they are in a spare room. He's talking to an architect and engineer about expanding our garage so he has more of a workshop. Right now, you can't move in the garage because of the tools. But I fear if he get's his larger garage, he'll just fill that up too. He won't get rid of anything.

My husband also collects some stuff🙄some are tools that are actually useful, but some are just old empty glass bottles that he finds somewhere. They are shaped differently than bottles in the stores, he kind of likes this older times aesthetic. Well, at least he cleans these bottles with bleach before placing them on the window to keep company to his other clutter 😂

I always hang my tshirts. But, as a time saver, I never make sure to put them outside in. I hang them the way they come out of the dryer. I pull them all out of the dryer, stack flat on the washing machine, inside out or outside in, and grab my hangers. Pick all of them up at the same time and hang them. Sometimes they wrinkle, sometimes they don’t. And I don’t iron. I don’t even own an iron or a board 😂

Oh, me, too! I feel like I'm having a panic attack sometimes. It didn't help that my husband grew up with a very demanding mother; everything had to be done perfectly, and of course it was never perfect enough. So when we got married, he transferred that onto me. No matter what I did, it was never good enough, or I just plain fell short in how much I could get accomplished (with two kids, grad school, and three jobs, no less). It was his first marriage, so he had unrealistic expectations. Over the years, he's much better about it, but the panic still comes when I do anything at all around the house.

So now I will count and wash 1/3 of dirty dishes, next time through I do the middle 1/3, and later try to get the rest done. I will do 1/3 but the whole kitchen if it's bad is too much to start. I have bins of some foods but I never "decant" batteries -- please check on that! It can be dangerous. I appreciate this video a lot! Thank you!

Since I do not have children, a routine that works for me is pick up after myself last thing before going out and first thing when coming in. I mean, bags, discarded shoes or jewelry, lunch box, umbrellas, etc.

I push myself to do at least one chore per day, my whole life I’ve done this and it is def easier to clean a clean house. I also always put something back where I first looked for it so it’s intuitive. I have a lot of kitchen drawers and I have one “redundant” system so my coffee station drawer has spoons, as well as the Norma, silverware drawer for convenience.

I like having most of my appliances (except the kitchenaid) put away too. I keep my fire extinguisher on the counter though, if there is an emergency i dont want to have to think about which cabinet its in. Yours was pushed back behind appliances in the cabinet in that shot will you be able to reach it in an emergency? Just a thought best regards.

I noticed that too. Ours is hanging under our breakfast bar....not in the cabinet. It's out of the way of traffic, but God forbid we ever need it, it's easy to grab.

I keep a little red wagon by the back door for when I park and need to empty the car. Between letting the dogs out, getting the mail inside, packages left at the gate, groceries, my sports drink, my workout bag I use at the gym (with smelly or damp clothes in there, lol), you name it. That way, there's only one trip and I don't have to worry about the cat getting out. The wagon wheels right into my hobby room, which is where the back door is. Once it's in the house, I can slip off my street shoes, hang up my jacket and purse, plug in my phone, empty the wagon, set the wagon outside onto the porch again, reheat my coffee, and look at my messages, lol.

Such a good video! Thank you! Can you do a clean out your clutter before Christmas video! Please and thank you! Also, I am someone who never decluttered really. So, it may need to be for the people who have a real mess! Thank you! Also, during Covid my husband decided to become a reseller so we have a lot of items. Any tips would be helpful.

Yep, I'm the same. I've got my bathroom sink area completely clear now, with just a wall mounted handwash dispenser, and it's so clean-looking, and easier to wipe down.

Thanks for more great tips! As far as the car goes… Even when my children were small, they knew the rule we get out of the car. “We carry as much stuff as we can from the car” :-) it also keeps you from losing your kids’ stuff that they drop in the car. The older they got the more trips we would take back to the car. When they were smaller, I would go back to the car and get everything out of the car. Now my kids are grown, and I still have the same habit.
