How To Prep A Fender For Primer

I am going to demonstrate how to prep a fender before applying primer. The method in this lesson will prevent applying primer on unsanded paint, which is a problem that I've seen happen. Follow the steps in this video and you not have that problem.

hi donnie , i need your advice on auto body. i little confused on somethings, 150 to 220 grit is for finishing body filler and glaze putty? 150 to 220 grit for feather edging paint layers? 400 to 600 grit is for waterborne and solvent born base coat? 800 grit and 1200 grit is for clear coat and air brushing ? am i right on all this i just want to make sure i got everything right.

I can use epoxy over all surfacers. However, if you only have a few metal spots, you can use self etch metal on just the metal spots, then use primer surfacer. I don't want to confuse you, but there is also a direct to metal primer. This is a 2K primer surfacer that can be applied over metal and sanded like primer surfacer. Ask you paint supplier for the brand you use if they have one.

The previous owner of my truck put on rhino liner as the body paint. What grid of sandpaper should I use to prep it for priming?

You do not need to strip to metal if old paint is in good condition. So if you do not have any metal, I would not use epoxy. Thanks for watching!

Donny, I have a situation that I have sprayed a 2K primer/surfacer on a bare door with some filler, and after viewing several of your vids, I see that I should have sprayed an 2K epoxy primer first. Can I spray epoxy over this surfacer if I sand it down a bit, or do I have to sand it all the way down to metal and body filler?

I've watched several of your videos and they are very informative. I have a question about primer. I have a 42 Ford I plan to paint myself. I am definately not a body man but I work in a cabinet shop doing a fair amount of putty and sand. I feel I have a good grasp of the bondo/sanding part. My question is, do I have to use epoxy primer on the fender or can I use just 2K primer without taking the body all the way down to metal. I want a good paint job that will last for years.

Hi, I am planning to sand my car to bare metal to colour it a new colour, someone told me i must not touch the metal when sanding as the moist in my hand will appear later in the pain and will peel off is this true? I have never done it before first time doing it at home. if you could help would be great thanks

don't take it to bare metal if you are just changing colors you have to epoxy prime the whole car leave the original paint on

I do to hit the hard to get areas and edges. If it is sanded good enough you don't have to, but I think it assures the panel is prepped well.

It's gonna be some metal, some paint, and some bondo. The fenders are what will have the bondo, the rest of the body is dent free, thank goodness.
