The fact that you're taking the time to explain the common mistakes of a beginner is actually giving me a chance to see exactly what i am doing wrong. That's a noticeable plus in every single one of your tutorial, which make me incline to actually listen and apply what you're teaching here, since you do tell us what a mistake, as well as a success, will look like, instead of only telling us the latter. Keep being fluent!

To anyone learning this just want to mention it takes a LOT of time and practice to get comfortable. It took me 3-4 weeks of practicing about an hour each day before I could just hop in place indefinitely. To actually get it controlled and relaxed it will take even longer. Relaxed is an important one because, as Ali mentions, it is extremely exhausting with bad technique. Don't get discouraged and keep at it!

Thanks for taking the time to make such great content. I'm 56 in a couple of weeks, have a wee DMRE Sect DJ bike, and really want to learn some trials tricks. JUSt working on basic track standing now. Too hot to gear up properly, but will get back to that soon, to work on manuals. Meantime, this back-hop tutorial gives me some great stuff to work on.

Just hopped five times with aplomb! Been trying for years and this is the first video that clicked. _"you have to make your body go there first"_ - why hasn't anyone else said that?! Obvious in hindsight, but key for a beginner! Took three sessions and i made my 5 hop breakthrough. Loads more to learn. Have this video on repeat. Thank you @aliclarkson !!

Started riding trials today, made some progress with backhops however just realised from this video that i'm pulling my bars up rather than transferring weight back when cranking up into them. Going from a bench or ledge I don't tend to have that problem, so big thanks to all the videos you do Ali and congrats on the new edit.

I don't know when I stopped cycling. I have Dany MacAskill's bike from way Back Home (the very first model with the cleats for the pad + disc brakes) and KZbin has stopped showing me your videos. and by chance I came across your videos which made me want to put it back. thank you!

I've been working on these for the better part of a year, starting to get the hang of them. Once I got to where I could consistently hop 10 or more times, I was stuck without progress for a while. Always hopping backwards and in circles. Decided I needed to set a goal,, so my goal was to hop down the two stair set at the skatepark. Was able to get that fairly quick. Something about having to look at the steps just made it work for me. After that I was able to hop almost in one spot and even pedal kick forward. Now I can do the six stair set at the park. I still need to clean them up and find it difficult to switch from forward hops to hopping in place, but setting a goal to aim for was huge for me.

Now I'm dreaming that one day I'll be able to do them half as good as you. What tutorials next? Maybe stoppie but really you're so good at everything and these tutorials are awesome so any moves really, and tell us how long it took you to develop some of these moves.

Very clear, calm, confidence inspiring instructions that only a master could give. Sharing is a noble trait! Great work! Thanks, it is good to understand all the effort and skills that go into a single component of making a fluid series of riding moves that are not normally individually the focus for analysis during a recreational view of one of your videos. What I'm saying is that these element details can be taken for granted if not studied in their individual own right.

Nice! I just started getting these after practicing all these techniques for maybe the last year or so. The missing piece of the puzzle for me was that I wasn't keeping my core, shoulders, and hips engaged enough and was just folding backwards like a limp noodle. Being in a strong position made a world of difference!

You're very good bud. I hop backwards on my back tire, and that's as far as I've got with years of practice. I don't want to be negative, but I just know there's things I can't do, like I remember there was a guy doing turn downs on this jump we were jumping, and it was just something I couldn't do. I don't think your video will change my abilities, but it was interesting insight.

I was curious to see if there are noticable differences between your technique and mine. It looks like you keep your rear brake locked through the really small stationary hops, whereas I unlock it for every hop, even the small ones. (At least I think so) I'll give it a test to see if changing this will improve my control. :)

Could you try and do a hopscotch? (not sure if i spelt it right). the thing where you go along a ladder kind of thing with two feet, one foot, two, one... But instead of feet, wheels. If you want rules I would say when it's both wheels, they have to touch the floor at basically the same time. You should also try going to a kids park and doing the real hopscotch to get the spacing right. I hope I'm making sense, if not just ask and ill explain more

It already took months of trying to get to back wheel by pedal and... I still can't. I can hit the pedal and lift the front wheel but most of the time I end up having my body too forward. I have a great fear of falling backward... And at the same time usually I leaning to unleading (or what's the word) foot (so it would be comfortable to step down of a bike). Trying to fight all of that but with a little result yet.

I don't understand how you do these. I'm on a second round now. I got myself a Inspired Flow 24" three years ago, rode about a year on it, and then sold it, 'cos I just didn't learn anything. Now I decided to give it another go, so two weeks ago I got myself a 20" Echo. I've ridden on it for two weeks (not every day), and the last two times just tried to learn backhops. I can pull it back, and sometimes jump about 1-2 cm one time, but that's it. I'm not even close to hop 2 times. And in this same stage I was on my Inspired. Well, it is good exercise, that I have to admit, but it so, so difficult.

You need to lean back and squeeze the rear brake super hard, I tried doing that but I couldn’t do it. The one thing that I learned I was doing wrong is I was doing the hops so slow, and waiting too long to do the next one. I started try to do it faster, and I was able to learn it.
