Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to bring my new fat bike to the first trials comp of the year. Having ridden my full suspension trail bike at a competition last year I thought a fat bike would be a huge challenge and was a little nervous.
Turns out it wasn't a bad choice after all! Give the video a watch to get my thoughts and see how I got on.
BIG thanks to David and the crew for organising this day and to all the riders for coming along and having a good time. If you'd like to come to a comp yourself I'd highly encourage it and would love to see more MTBers come and challenge their skills. Don't worry about your bike or ability, we're all friendly and you'd have a great time.
Also a BIG thanks to Ross and Rory for helping film :)
Follow @scottish_bike_trial on Instagram for information on Scottish events and if asked I'm sure they'd point you in the right direction for other UK comps too.
If you'd like to understand the rules to help with this video or to learn before you enter then David was nice enough to write them down for me (plus here's a link to the official UCI rules page
www.uci.org/regulations/3MyLD... )
"At SBT we now utilise UCI positive scoring rules however in Primary and Novice allow bash and pedal.
To simplify, each participant rides a series of sections, usually 5 sections and 3 laps of the same five.
Four routes within each section, white / Primary, green / Novice, blue / Inter, red / Expert. At National comps also yellow for the Elite riders.
Each competitor gets the section to themselves, no mass starts or riding head to head with someone else.
Within each section, 6 sectors.
You enter Sector one when your front axle crosses the start line, and leave it when your back axle passes through the gate. At that point you are in Sector 2. If you get through sector 1 without a dab you get 10 points, if you dab no points but so long as you don't 5 you can move to the next sector by negotiating the gate and then try to score points in subsequent sectors.
If your back axle passes through the gate and you then come back through that gate you have fived.
If you go through someone else's gate, you have fived.
If any part of your body other than your foot touches anything, you have fived.
If you approach a gate from behind it you have fived.
If you go outside any tape, you have fived. The bike, not you if you put a foot down on the other side of the tape.
If the line between your axles crosses a get marker you have fived.
If both feet end up on the same side of the bike....you have fived..
Last thing you do not get the points for sector 6 until the front axle crosses the end gate."
I hope this was helpful and I hope you enjoyed the video! Red Route next time?
See you next week!

This video encouraged me to buy a new set of hydraulic brakes for my fatbike, because the 2008 cable Tektro's that I said were "good enough for now" have shown to be ineffective. No stopping when it's an emergency... Only "if the bike feels like it." 😐 Sometimes it doesn't. I want that level of control and brake hold 🙏 You inspire me even more to push my bike skills and equipment further

@ScotsBeats 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ali_Clarkson I think getting some type of spacers you could put on the front axle to allow the thinner wheel on the wider forks and lining up the brake disc to the calliper. I think that would be the only possibility, seeing as the head tube will be fatter for the fatty bike. But I honestly think it would transform the feel of the bike by making the front much lighter and throwable, not that you looked like your were struggling..

Sweet Dude, looked like you had a boat load of fun on that Fattie. Agree that that frame/fork/wheel combo looks absolutely Right. I had no doubt that at a Scottish Trials comp, the Fattie would do pretty good with the traction you would gain from those tyres. ON the subject of tyres, know you're new to this sort of rubber size Ali, so I'll say it again, 1/4 PSI makes a huge difference with them, so get yourself a really good tyre pressure gauge - looked like you could have easily gone to 5-5.5 PSI and gotten more grip.
@Ali_Clarkson
@Ali_Clarkson 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lynx! I think I got lucky with how the sections were laid out but it still surprised me with how well it coped. The tyre pressure felt pretty spot on, I rimmed out on a couple of rocks and without any inserts in I think I'd be risking damaging the rim if I went any softer but I'm well impressed with how low you can go...I had no idea!

@@Ali_Clarkson yeah that make sense. Same here. I've never flown before either, so that didn't even cross my mind. Hopefully that stuff will chill out at some point. I know most of us trials people in the US are looking forward to that comp! After it happened last year, some guys on the east coast managed to get a few comps organized for this year. Sounds like we've got a few of the top UCI guys making it out this year and the Shindig crew sound interested in coming too. Really cool seeing the sport gain a bit of a foothold over here again!

I've never been to a mountain bike trial but a few vids have made me think it looks like fun. In Motorcycle trials the easy route is often something you could ride on a trail or enduro bike as a bit of an introduction. Is mountain bike trials like this, could I turn up with my 29er hardtail for a first go, ride the easy route as a total novice and still have a fun day? Just been trying to do some googling and not finding much.

Dude, you’ve got skills! 👍 Watching you compete on the fat bike brings me back to the 80’s when we rode the XC, Hillclimb, Downhill and Trials competitions all on the same bike. One question, did you switch out the Lauf fork specifically for this or have you shelved it?

Thank you, I wish competitions all on the same bike was still a thing! Yes sadly I broke the fork within a couple of hours, not sure if it was already damaged or just really didn't like trials riding...a real shame but it really didn't feel great for trials so it's quite nice to be on rigid now

@@Ali_Clarkson That would be a fun contest! Say a two-three day tournament with different competitions but only one bike per rider aloud 😄 So the rider had to do a tactical choice of either a bike they thought they would do at least average with on everything, or super great on some parts so that their sum of points would cover fails on other parts 🤓 Sounds like quite a concept in my little brain 🥳

Looking good on the fattie! You can shed off some weight from the tires by switching to Schwalbe Jumbo Jim's. They are at around 1.3kg for the 26x4.8" and 1kg for the 4.0".

So this begs the question, 4.6" tires on a comp trials bike? Would it work if it was possible? Or would the weight outweigh the tire footprint?
@Ali_Clarkson
@Ali_Clarkson 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's needed for modern comps. Back in the day when they were held in locations like this even at world level there might have been times it was a huge advantage but these days at the highest level they're mostly on man made stuff and heights of jumps outweigh the need for grip and sadly these would just be too heavy

@@groghunter7403 Moto guys have an engine to help though :P Most UCI world cup trials comps are held on man made stuff these days, if they were still on muddy hillsides I think there could be an advantage to a fat bike style wheel but as it stands it would just be too heavy.
