I am going HOME to Caledonia on Thursday, April 18th, 2024. Born and bred in Inverness but been in the US since 1983. This song has been on repeat for weeks as I prepare for my trip. I MISS Scotland every single day of my life!!!

My mum saw Dougie at Cambridge festival this August. She was so excited as she met him afterwards and he called her by her name and she had an amazing time. Two days after coming back she had a blood clot in the brain and suffered a heart attack and passed away after not coming out the coma. We began her funeral service with this song. Not a dry eye by the end of this song, was so perfect and means even more because of her seeing him just before. Also the last picture we have of her, she was forced to have her pic taken with this Scottish flag and she's standing there doing the metal \m/ hand in the breeze blowing her flowing dress and colourful hair. Just perfect, like this song.

Played this at my Dad’s funeral in Edinburgh(his request), I’m from Canada and my Dad left Scotland when he was 21 and lived in Canada all his life, went back in 2010 with Cancer and told me not to go over but I didn’t listen to him when I was young, and wasn’t going to listen to him when I was older, made it two days before he died and spent three weeks walking around Edinburgh, never ever forget it and when life gets to me, this song always brings me back to a calm state of being. Scotland forever!!

My darling husband died suddenly in April this year. His family are Scottish and he lived there himself for a time. He loved Scotland and was immensely proud of his ancestry. He played this song to me many times and it was one of the songs I had played at his funeral. It's so beautiful and moving and has meanings on many levels... I got a scholarship for a uni in Ireland. I’d never been before and knew no one in the entire country. When I arrived I was nervous to leave Scotland and excited for the future. My parents came with me to help move my stuff and as we were getting coffee before their flight back, leaving me alone in this strange new place, this song came on in the coffee shop. It comforted me and reminded me I was not too far from home. Anytime in the past 3 years I’ve felt sad or homesick, I’ve listened to this to help me get through it. Now, I have been offered a job back home in Scotland. It’s a full circle moment. This song was the first thing I remember about being on my own in Ireland, now as I sit with my empty room all packed up ready for the airport, I listen again. I’m crying with happy memories with friends I hope to keep in touch with. They will get on grand in this great country. But as for me, Caledonia is calling and now I’m coming home!

My Grandpa's name is Doug. He passed away the 23rd of this month, 4 days ago. His funeral was yesterday. I was going through his Facebook last night when I found he linked this song, he listened to this a couple days after my grandma (his wife) passed back in 2018. She heard this song for the first time on her way to my grandpa's dad's funeral. She fell in love with it, and my grandpa loved it because she loved it. This isn't the type of music I listen to, but it touches my soul in ways words can't describe.

I was hearing this song for the first time in 2020 in Dublin in a Pub, being sung by a guy with so much passion that I was in tears because I had to think of my dad who passed away a year ago. This year we went to Scotland for the first time and I (being german) finally completely understand the song. This really is a place to hang you heart on an we already long to return. Thank you for composing this song and thank you unknown musician in the 'Cobblestone' in Dublin for singing the song and putting so much passion in it.

I have to say this. I am a half-Scot, 74 years old, living in France as a composer/musician. This song has an ethereal quality that is so sincerely endorsed by the hypnotic and peaceful timbre of Dougie’s voice. The arrangement is so perfect. I have listened to it many many times and unfailingly, every time, it brings a tear. For those who understand this effect, you will know that it is totally involuntary! If you get to read this Dougie, thank you for such a beautiful contribution to my music laden world.

I’m Scottish, and I feel the same about Phil Colclough’s _”Song for Ireland,”_ especially Mary Black’s version. I live in the US now, and people often ask me if I’m Irish. When I reply, _”Almost. I’m from Scotland”_ they usually apologize, but I tell them not to. The Scots and Irish, I tell them, are in many ways indistinguishable, and, as one of he former, I consider the latter as beloved cousins. It’s easy to see why, when you consider that you can easily replace the word _”Scottish”_ with the word _”Irish”_ in the following and it still works: How many Scottish folk singers does it take to change a light bulb? Five. One to put in the new bulb, and four to sing about how much we miss the old one. 😬

I lived in Abu Dhabi for 12 years from the age of 21 - 33. In my last year I went home for holidays and explored with my daughter and wife, we attended two very Scottish weddings and headed back to the desert. We touched back down in Abu Dhabi and the very 1st day back, I turned and told my wife we have to go back home. There was no choice at that point, being away any longer was not an option...We have now been home 3 years and I believe because of my time away I have a huge appreciation for this country we call home, there is something special about Scotland above anywhere else in the world. This song could have been written about me that day I arrived back in Abu Dhabi and because of that this will always be more than just a song to me and my family.

@doreensmith. A Scot, no need to further to define him by gender, that's pride enough. My ancestors had much to be grateful for Scots, primarily an accent even more incomprehensible than their's. If as ungracious as meself, add, former invaders yet colonials, earlier. If Hibs and Celtic are Scot, so am I.

Caledonia is the ancient name for Scotland. It is the name given us by the Romans 2,000 years ago, given to the whole country as it was the name of the largest tribe who led the fight to drive out the Romans on their three failed invasions of Caledonia. We romantically retain the name in songs and poetry. Beautifully sung!

@Warrior Son it is, and a few do but its not really been enough. Usually the people who do speak gaelic learned from family and can only speak it with them, anywhere else if you were to walk up to someone and speak gaelic they wouldn't have a clue what you're saying or what language you're speaking even in Scotland. The government put gaelic translations on road signs but that didnt work. Perhaps they should teach it in schools. Don't think wee nic will take that advice off me though

LYRICS I don't know if you can see the changes that have come over me In these last few days I've been afraid that I might drift away So I've been telling old stories, singing songs That make me think about where I came from And that's the reasons why I seem so far away today Oh and let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home For if I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had Oh and I have moved and I've kept on moving Proved the points that I needed proving Lost the friends that I needed losing, found others on the way Oh and I have tried and kept on trying Stolen dreams, yes there's no denying I have travelled hard with conscience flying somewhere with the wind Oh and let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home For if I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had Now I'm sitting here before the fire, the empty room, the forest choir The flames that couldn't get any higher Well they've withered, now they've gone But I'm steady thinking My way is clear and I know what I will do tomorrow When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow, well I will disappear Oh and let me tell you that I love you That I think about you all the time Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home For if I should become a stranger You know that it would make me more than sad Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

Between 2014 to 2016 I went to Australia on a working holiday visa for one year. Finished my 88 regional days and got granted my 2nd year visa. I wanted to stay but unfortunately the company I was working for promised me sponsorship but in the end didn't actually sponsor me just false promises. When I had to get a flight home after 2 years of finding myself and becoming a better person learning new cultures and just being more at peace with myself. I was in Cairns airport and this amazing song came on my KZbin randomly. I just burst out crying as all my emotions came flooding in the middle of the airport. It was just so overwhelming and it related to me so much in that moment. I will always cherish this song of such a sad but also amazing memory of my independence and and finding myself. Gets me every time! 😥

It happens to people . . . My father was stationed in Scotland during WWII, and fell in love with the highlands, the pipes, the seacoasts, and the Glenlivet :). His ancestry was French Canadian, and behind that Normandy. Somewhere in that, I think, far back is a lot of Vikings that raided the Scottish coast, and sometimes settled there instead of France.

Proud of the welcome Scots have given everyone in Glasgow this past 2 weeks at the games. Love this song and hope it is played tonight at the closing ceremony. One last party, and this song epitomises our love for this country of ours.

Thank you so much for this song.. I miss my Dad... Ive never been to any of my Celtic homelands.. but today I go pay for my Dads burial plot, to bury his ashes near his mother. it's taken 6 months.. and so much pain and horrible things to go thru, just to honor my Dads burial wishes.. God bless Scotland.. this song comforts me.. I miss my Dad singing... he was a singer for over 60years. He was so proud of his Bloodline, both sides.. Scott/German. what a mix aye?? lol.. God bless Scotland forever freedom, i hope your vote sets you free! Love and Prayers, Love Freedom

There is something very magical to my ears about Scottish vocals. I don't know if it's the way the accent makes the words roll off the tongue in a velvety fashion or what but it's Bloody lovely and I can listen to it for hours ! Rod Paterson from "The Easy Club" is another favourite and also "The Knowe O'Deal". Dougie McClean has such a lovely kind face too.
