There's a guy in my town that buys brand new bikes off the the showroom floor by the trailer full, with cash. He disassembles them and parts them out on eBay. That's ALL he does for a living. Totally mental.

This is one of those things where a "kit bike" would be wonderful. A few options or upgrades here and there, send a crate or two along... I'd absolutely go in for something like that.

top tip: skip the manufacturer and go straight to OEM wherever possible. BMW charges 360€ + VAT for a single F800R front caliper. Buy it straight from italy under the name P4 30/34F Seria Nera - 320€ max. Cheaper if you want it in gold instead of black. Same goes for the F800ST drive belt - 430€ from BMW. 130€ from Contitech for the CT1130, which is only missing the BMW print. Motorrad magazine looked in to this after someone drove their car in to a Triumph Triple they were testing and were surprised that the damage was not 1.2 grand, as the rider had estimated, but that the bike was a write off. Triumph and a BMW spokesperson explained that the costs were mostly due to the way these things are sold and stored, with Just-in-time delivery making manufacturing significantly cheaper but keeping warehouses stocked with old parts is significantly more expensive. Basically, you're not just paying for the part, but also for the shelf it would have sat on for the next 30 years after the line runs out and the manufacturer stocks parts for their dealerships. Hence BMW OEM parts being barely palateable in Germany, but if you add shipping to the US, it gets ridiculous. Final sidenote: The K1600B and the GTL have a limiter. Buy the K1600GT or do something cool and switch a CBX1000 pro link to fuel injection, swap the fork and swingarm for a GSXR fork and swingarm and then find a 6 to 1 header. Wrenching on bikes is not hard and these are just part swaps that require practically no machining.

I would love to build my own bike ! If the price for a "IKEA" bike would be 10% cheaper than the ready bike, I wouldn't waste a second thinking about it.

@@UrgetoRide Ive been thinking about this for a couple of days now. litterally two not a couple of beers which is twice a few... anyway, I can understand manufacturing costs, i can understand shipping costs, surely theres an assembely cost somwhere? how can the bike be more ecpensive to assembe withought machienes doing it( parts alone - to assemble a bike from scratch all parts fabricated and ready - the time it would take an experienced builder will come close to a week) that price difference makes no sence

@@sleepwalker3520 It makes no sense to me either - the only I can rationalise is that it makes them a ton of money. Insurance payouts make them a ton of money. People breaking shit makes them a ton of money. They're not incentivized to lower the cost. I'll be honest with you, IF that means a lower bike purchase bike, fine. But if they fleece on parts AND do a european on the bike sales price - that shit is wrong.

There's no way to do it like that reasonably. It would have to be like a kit they bring together for you. Without the markups. Nearer 'factory' cost.

Wow, some research went into this one. Suprised there are not companies buying brand new bikes just to strip and sell as new parts! Trouble with that idea is there are folks out there acquiring nearly new bikes for free and selling on the parts. Yamaha selling two dashes, one for miles one for Kilometers? I'm forever changing my XSR900 from miles to Kilometers at the fuel station trying to set the trip. Great vid 👍

Would I build it myself? Yes, I build bikes for a living, it isn't hard. Would I trust 'Bob' to build it ? Well, I'd check it over thoroughly first, but yes. It's no worse than buying a secondhand bike from a Brit. Do I want the 213? Nah, i'll have that stored sedici and pay the 4k premium..

performance bikes (I think) did the same back in he mid eighties with a CBR600 and it worked out around 25k when the bike was about 3k.. so this doesn't surprise me at all. Great video though, I sell bikes and parts, it's ridiculous what parts cost from dealers

Congrats! POV crystal clear. But there are exceptions. E.g. The Yamaha T7 Rally version: if you buy all the single parts who came in this version individually (from Yamaha site at Yamaha prices) instead of the Rally version, you will save money (approx. 600€ without rally colors). At this point you need to ask yourself if the Rally colors are so important to you to give up of 600€. To me 600€ is a lot of gas/kms. Just check it out.

second hand? no, but i definitely see myself buying a parts bin of a dualsport motorcycle, those things are easy to work on, light and honestly? pretty simple, most of them dont even have abs and suzuki is still selling carbed dualsports for crying out loud, so if i had the choice to buy a brand new drz400 parts bin for 2/3 of the price, i would pull the trigger

If replacement parts/engines where cheap, a lot of older bikes would be revived instead of going to the trash... But if rebuilding the engine with (even 3rd party rebuild parts) will cost you 5 times the price of the bike... Well, you're better off getting something that still decently runs.. I know why replacement parts are more expensive and yes manufacturers make quite a big profit on them, I worked in a factory one, where the doof of a Mercedes sprinter was build for 12€ a piece, leaving the door directly to the final customer where Mercedes charged them 800 bucks.. But you have to consider keeping the tools working, storing them (40 tons of toolsteel taking quite a lot of space and that is only 1 part of a 8 step process) and also producing small(er) qnatities is much more expensive than doing big runs, setting the machines up takes more time than they actually produced parts (4hr setup, 2h running parts)... But what really bothers me with replacement parts is that you most of the time don't get OEM quality, often parts that didn't meet the spec in terms of measurements for the OEM, are being sold off as replacement parts - and that's just shit.. Most of the time customers don't even realize they get wore quality parts than the OEM manufacturer himself would accept for production pats..

The little Honda C90 CUB, genuine brake shoes used to be cheaper than pattern ones and much better than the pattern ones, I think this has to be the only bike that has reasonable priced pars. XJR1300 head gasket is over 90 quid, outrageous!!

I fell terribly ill when you said you priced each part. That should be used as torture, especially if a time limit is enforced. Side note, I think Yamaha believes it develops the best exhaust in the universe so they feel they can charge for it. I was told a stock system for their Raider is over 3,000 dollars. 15 thou for the whole bike though. Other side note, no light apparatus should cost more than 100 dollars and in being generous. LED do not last as long as they should. You should be able to just replace a bulb.

I mean the whole of the RC213 not just the light, was a disappointment to people. They were expecting an RSV4 fighter and instead got a museum piece only for rich people. I'm one of them...

Not like it used to b but building a bike from scratch using factory parts b crazy.everything a stealership ha is way marked up so this only made sense to me no building a bike from scratch using forks from one ,swingarm, suspension from another etc you could prolly build a street weapon cheaper than buying a new h2 or mt07

Fowler’s for instance are terrible for prices of some things though. They want £127 for a vee rubber front tyre for a grom. Obviously listed so that you don’t bother to order that as they don’t stock it and want to put you off.

The prices are exorbitant from the factory, but yes ofc Fowlers take their margins on that.. But yes you're right I'd say less than 1% of a bikes parts are on stock on average. Everything is on backorder for weeks or just not available.

I do have the feeling that DYO cruiser from parts could be cheaper as they tend to have much less carbon fibre and quirky parts. Try start with a Japanese cruiser base like a Yamaha midnight star or a Honda VTX.

@@UrgetoRide Even better, not a 2020 new one: I'd try a 2016 model for example. And the best bit is cruisers are highly customable, if a part is too expensive surely there's is some great aftermarket at a lower price.
