UNWRAPPED is a series where I go over fascinating bikes, their history, facts and trivia you can flex with over your friends, and give you ALL the low down on it with a light touch of humour (ok mostly heavyhanded repulsive touch but anyway..😂)
Today we look into the phenomenal success of the MT07 or FZ07, it's evolution from an idea to a final product, it's history if you will.. and make a case of it being the bike of the decade for the impact it has had.

I love my MT07 more and more after every ride. Nice and nimble, love the acceleration even though its restricted and it's alright on fuel. My bum ends up numb every now and then and the suspension problem doesn't bother me. Slap on an akrapovic and you'll love the sound of it, the neighbours might not tho haha.

Thats precisely what I say to people - the engine is the most important component of a bike. If the manufacturer gets it right - the rest I can excuse. You can change bad suspenders. You can tweak a horrid tail end. But you can't make up for a shit engine. Glad you like your 7 bud

I had the MT-07 the year it came out. It was great, and even better after upgrading the suspension. But I sold it. Waiting for the next gen or for Yamaha to finally sell the Tracer 700 in North America. I now have the current SV650 and it’s shown me how criminally underrated this bike is. The MT-07 has a great engine and it’s a fun bike, but the SV shows that it’s been honed and refined over two decades. The engine is a gem, the chassis and brakes are better, and so is the build quality.
@UrgetoRide

The post Gladius SV650s are gems, you're right. Never really gelled with the pre ones. Thats not to say they're bad though, they're a fantastic segway into proper fast bikes.

Great vid, I don’t watch many all the way through but did this one. Might be because I had an MT07 2016 model for 2 years and put 25,000 klm on her, not a single commuting K on it. All just fun rides and loved it to bits. As for a bike I would like to see your take on, my current love, I sold the MT for a 2020 Kawasaki z900. Holy cow!!! I have a new love and it has seemed like a natural progression. With the 2020 upgrades it has made what has always been a great bike greater, would love to see your take on it. All the best!!

I like your videos. I will probably never own an MT07 but will forever be thankful for the heart it donated to the T7. Being a rider for around 35 years, the T7 was the bike I dreamed of long ago, a dream started by the original R80 G/S which I once owned, but something BMW have never been capable of fulfilling. Now I have a T7, my first ever new bike, and down under we have the country where such a bike makes sense. I think you should do a T7 video. Just kidding, I watched that before watching this, then I subscribed. Thanks!

More technical stuff is definitely coming I really enjoy them but KZbin has a habit of recommending them a lot less annoyingly, so you can understand I'm less motivated... I have a whole list in the back burner, why first gear clunks, why the back wheel rotates even in neutral on a wheel stand, suspension myths, silly things or just plain interesting things like that :) Stick around if that stuff interests you, the more there is of us, the less reliant I am on the almighty algorithm and I can do different things 🤜🤛

The only thing that has aesthetically degraded over time is the color faded external plastic water pipes that go to the engine. Other than that the gear indicator sometimes fail. I've not yet washed my 2017 FZ-07 and with that rust advisory, I may never consider it in the future! You're right though. The engine is a gem. Transmission is a bit rough on downshifting in the lower gears, but like you say it was built to a price point. I can forgive them for not putting spool points on the swing arm, but I will never forgive Yamaha for failing to put drain plugs on the forks.

Nice flexible power band, great handling / brakes in spite of the cheap suspension (the MT09 is much worse) and great fuel economy the seat is more comfortable than the MT09 seat, certainly good enough for 100 mile + ride outs... and it looks great.

I've got a MT07 2018, coming from an R1 2005 ( Back in the days ) It did take me some time to adjust to a CP2 in line 2 super torquey cylinders. The R1 was much smoother on acceleration being an in line 4 cylinders. Present day, whilst on a recent 12 hours trip on it I've encountered all sorts of bikes on the way ( Which I left behind ) Until a couple of new Africa Twins decided to have a go at me, next thing I know I was racing with these Africa Twins guys ( I hardly ever decline a race shoot out ) They really tried their best to show off their skills but they simply couldn't keep up with my MT 07 acceleration, they were impressed by how fast I was leaving them behind, it was fun, I'm still giggling when I think about it. I love my MT 2018 which is still in standard conditions with it's own original pipe on it. I just Luv it 💘

Means a lot to me Steve, appreciate it. You see with TV you would never get such direct feedback from the community. You lose a lot of personal touch - I would never want to give that away.

Amazing editing for a decade that'd be best remembered by giving yourself a concussion to forget it. I'm glad I learned at least some of the highlights of the decade when it comes to two wheel fun. Now I really hope Maccies does a promo with the NM4 just for shits and giggles

Dunno, but all the rust pics are from riders located in the UK. And everybody knows that the UK is surrounded by salty sea air and the weather there isn't great either. So yeah, things tend to rust their pretty quickly. But I have to agree that they rust relatively fast. Not the frame in my case, but the sheet metal holder for the ECU rusted where the ECU had contact to it. I can't compare it to other makes, but rust on a two year old well maintained bike that spends its off time in a dry garage is pretty bad.

Precisely, I'm sure an MT07 in California would be fine, but down here where it rains.. quite often, it CAN become a big concern..

add a 2022 MT07 to my stable, sitting alongside a 2003 HD lowrider and a 2014 HD street glide special. this little weight is just about the perfect machine for this 53 year old 5'5: 160 lb. American. My biggest issue is the seat. IT sucks. I've done 1124 miles in 22 hours on my street glide and 826 in 18 1/2 hours on my low rider.. 2 hours on the MT is a chore, Guess I'll be modifying it like I did the HD's. the factory suspension is tremendous compared the HD's even with them upgraded to progressives, as far as the switch size again I'm a small person so no problem The sound of the Dominator exhaust is amazing. vert happy purchase

I used to own a 1999 VFR800, bought new. The saying was "if you own one bike, this is the one" How true, great bike. For me, 5'5" 140 lbs, the MT07 is better, just needs a better seat and a decent windscreen for longer rides. Easily done. Mine is a 2016.

I'm going for my full licence through the Honda training school, and have been looking for my next bike. The MT-07 was one I was looking at, plus the KTM 790 Duke, and the KTM 890 Duke, but for various reasons I think I'll be giving them a miss. I've been out on a Honda CB650R, and it's a peach of a bike. It also looks fantastic, I could look at it all day, and it's very refined. Those four swept exhaust pipes which pay homage to the Honda CB400F of 1975, just look great, along with the rest of the bike. Plus, you know the CB650R is going to be reliable; it's a Honda. You won't be going back and forth to the dealer (KTM), it's going to start in the morning, and it definitely won't rust after a few 1000 miles on the clock. I also found the CB650R easier to ride than my Honda CB125R! If you complete the Honda training course, Honda will also give you £500 off a new bike, so the CB650R looks very tempting. An MT-07 might beat it off the line, but it will run out of puff, and the CB650R will leave it in its wake! Then there is Triumph. A second-hand Triumph Street Triple is very high on my list, but, there's a fly in the ointment. Triumph are launching the Triumph Trident triple on 30th October! That looks like it will be more than a match for the MT-07, and it's bang up-to-date. It's an entry level middle-weight, so it will be a lot cheaper than the Street Triple, and with less power the bets are it will have a 675cc unit. From the teaser photos, it looks fantastic. It'll probably be up to Triumph's usual standards as well, and therefore will be reliable. The reality is, for now, my decision will probably be dictated by the insurance costs. My aim eventually, is a brand new Triumph Street Triple RS in maybe two to three years time, fingers crossed.

Looks like you got your shit carefully planned :) Can't say I disagree with any of the statements. I too started out with a Honda and it thought me how to ride rather than how to fix/or learn the route to the dealer for repairs . And it was light on my wallet. Can't recommend the Japanese enough for first bikes honestly.

@@UrgetoRide I also fancy a BMW R 1250 GS! I'm doing the Direct Access Scheme with Honda, it's a bit more expensive, but all the CB650R's are new, my instructor is excellent, and the family who run the training school are really nice. My DAS lessons start next week, and I can't wait to get back on a CB650R. I did my CBT on a 16-year-old Suzuki RV125 VanVan, the rest of the kit was old and smelly. It was July, but it poured down all day, and it was freezing - never again!
