The hot selling Toyota RAV4 is due for a complete redesign sometime in 2024 as a 2025 model year. Therefore should you wait for the all-new version or buy the current RAV4? Automotive Engineer David Chao provides 15 reasons why he believes you should buy the current, 2023 version of the RAV4 instead of waiting for the new generation version.

Top 5 reasons you need to wait for the current RAV4: 1. $3-20k Markups 2. Long Wait times 3. Trim-gated options (seriously I have to go to the top for dynamic parking grid lines and sensors and power passenger seats?) 4. Ridiculous mandatory port and dealer add-ons that are “part of the Monroney label thus part of the car” 5. Bad loan financing rates

the 2025 model is going to be another 5k more expensive, so honestly maybe its just better to buy the current version now. I dont really think its going to be that better. In fact I myself just bought the upgraded RAV4 Hybrid last week and should get it in 7 months

As an engineer, I naturally agree 100% on reason #1. The first release of ANY new generation or implementation of ANY new feature of ANY product, in general, is always a huge learning experience for the team that designed it. There are just too many factors for long term reliability that traditional design reviews and accelerated endurance testing cannot catch.

I’m currently driving a 2005 Toyota Sienna still runs great at 323K miles and I can wait indefinitely buying the next best Toyota or Lexus when the time is right but one thing I know I would only buy a Toyota or a Lexus. 48 years of ownership experience among many well known brands have taught me to stick with only two brands regardless how good reviews other brands get from automobile reviewers. My previous personal ride was the beloved 1985 Toyota Supra that I kept for 23 years still ran great at 300K miles with few minor repairs.

David, The way things are going, we will be waiting until 2025 to get a 2023 RAV4. 🤣🤣 On a practical note, the rear seat space NEEDS to be upgraded to match the competition. Toyota seems to be oblivious to the existence of today's rear-facing child seats. Those seats are easily accommodated in the CR-V as well as the Kia/Hyundai offerings.

Always liked the current gen design when it was first introduced in 2019 but couldn't stand the tiny infotainment screen, let alone a wide bezel. Finally bought a 2023 hybrid xse with full option, manufactured in Japan, with a 10.5 inch display two months ago. Only complaint is no loaner car while in service at Toyota for whatever reason, unlike Lexus I had. I know the 6th gen will look nicer but I still drive a 2007 Tacoma with 300K+ miles as an original owner, meaning I don't change cars every few years unless totaled.

Hi David, there's another notable difference between the Japanese built vs. the Canadian built RAV4s. Japanese built ones have access cover in the front bumper area to allow attaching a threaded front tow hook. Canadian built ones do not have this. I'm not sure why Toyota decide to allow for such a difference in spec. One would think that on the Woodland edition, customers would like to have a front tow hook attachment in case it's needed out on the trails? Might you know why there is such a difference between the Japanese vs. the Canadian built RAV4s?

Thanks David for the insight. You typically start your video reviews with a panel alignment check. In the case of the Woodland Edition you measured 4.5mm-5.0mm for the hood/fender per the video. How exactly is there a difference between Canada and Japan manufacturing in this area if the sheet metal stamping is the same? Is it a matter of the assembly and adjustment process in Canada is that much worse than Japan?

Excellent video. All RAV4s are great, some better than others. When this generation came out we bought a new '19 XLE Hybrid for the following reasons. Prefer the 2.5L fuel injected engine, prefer the "indent" shifter and manual hand brake, like the in dash screen with navigation instead of the "ugly" pop up screen. That thing looks like it would obstruct my view and just looks cheap to me. I don't have to worry about the corrosion of the hybrid cable which they have with the current hybrids. My '18 has been perfect in every way. I would recommend to people that can only afford a used RAV4 and can find one with comparable miles I would take the last generation and definitely no the trouble pron 19 or 20 model of the new generation. (fuel tank fill and battery issues).

David, your reviews are so informed insightful and cover topic areas that are not saturated already on KZbin. I’ve been waiting for and hoping for someone to do a thorough review of the incredible amount of integrated electronics on the RAV4. How are they designed? How are they sourced? How does an automotive company maintain its reputation for reliability when a vehicle becomes dependent on highly sensitive electronic equipment? What are the best pros of all of the (recently) new electronic equipment? What are some cons? Is there anything consumers can do to maintain the electronic equipment like they do the other aspects of their vehicle? I would love to see a video of that nature. Regardless, thank you so much for yet another excellent review.

The funny thing about the cargo size. I own both the 2023 Woodland and a 2008 Sport Rav4 and the 2008 has more cargo room then my new Rav4, but the ride height and width is wider then the 2008 without a doubt. Both have 18 rims but the newer one does ride higher then the older 2008 version. I can say from owning a 173k 2008 Rav4 the long term reliability has been excellent that is what you are buying not the extra heated seats or the other comments that seems to always become a focal point about it not being fancy enough like a Kia/Hyundai which has terrible long term reliability by the way. I look all design, function and how well it will hold up over time not just a few years and then you have major bills in repairs. Kia/Hyundai motors are not a Toyota.

I put a deposit down for a 2023 XSE with tech last September, been on top of my dealership's list since December, still waiting. At this rate it'll probably be a 2024 though the sales guy said he personally spoke with the regional rep about it so I'll see if that matters any. If the 2025 is good out the gate without issues I might trade it in assuming trade in prices don't crater though it'll probably still be better to wait a couple model years to work out some of the kinks.

For any car, when a new model comes out it takes about 24 months to see issues, reliability, good or bad ergonomic and overall quality of the new model being judge by users and critics. You buy a first yesr model, expect headaches, more than likely you will discover traits the new model has that may be not proven reliable and the manufacturers tend to change certain features after the first 18 months of life of a new car release.

Wonder what year you had? As I'm 6'-5" and too big around at 290. ha ha 😇 I know a few Toyota Fleet guys who let me test a 2021 RAV4 Prime XSE w/PM-Prem. Pkg. for 24 hours and the 2021 seat was a lil' narrow for me... but then I've driven several 2023 where it certainly seems the sets seem wider to me. Even my wife who is very thin thought the 2023 seats were a lil' "flatter" with less bolstering. Back in 2007 I had a similar thing... I'd rented an -07 Limited V6 for a week to really test it... and I hated it as I just didn't fit right. But then one of the Fleet guys said, "you should drive the Sport V6 and it was a HUGE difference for my detailed butt. The difference was the Limited had the Power Seat and the Sport had a Manual Seat. Where the Manual Seat actually went back about 1" further than the power seat. So for me, that 1" made all the difference in the world for my seating position and where my knee rested again the center console. I will just never forget what HUGE difference that was for me at the time. So I am very curious what year yours was... thanks so much!!! 👍

Toyota's current TNGA designs have taken a huge leap backwards in accommodation for taller drivers and occupants. The last real Yaris they sold here has more headroom than today's RAV4. 🤨Rear seat legroom is also in short supply compared to Honda etc.
@teknightrider2586
@teknightrider2586 Жыл бұрын
@@moeanthony9308 That's really true... I've been blessed to have been a lil' over 30K miles in 26 countries, and we are jumbo size here in America (again coming from a 6'-5" too big around guy). 😇 But I've also had 34 vehicles in my young 54 years of life (dating myself). 🤔Where I've owned every truck there is, except a Nissan product (where I've had everything from a 454 2500 Suburban, Dodge Cummins, Reg. F-150, a recent F-150 Lightning, 4Runner, 3-Tundras, Taco TRD Sport and Honda Ridgeline)... Then I've had 9 Toyotas and 9 Acura/Honda products, too. Anyway, it really is true, at least for us, that most trucks are just too big now. Most trucks I see need a trailer because they are just too tall to lift anything into the bed like a water and dryer. ha ha 🤣 So I really do like "right sized / Goldilocks" vehicles that are not too big, but also not to small.. that still handle nice and are very quick. Yet can stop where some trucks have stoping distances that would plow another 20 to 40 more. Anyway just my 2-½ cents, as I agree. 😇

If a panel is symmetrical like the hood, and the gaps are larger than the Japan-built version, doesn't this suggest that the hood is actually manufactured a bit smaller to allow for wider panel gaps? Otherwise, the gaps would not be the same on both sides of the hood.

I think buying this current year/generation makes sense. 2019-2021 RAV4 had several known issues (leaking roof rail that damaged headliners, cable gate that rusted where it connects to the MGR, etc.). It takes Toyota a few years or towards the end of the generation to fix known issues. The next gen released during the first year will undoubtedly have new unknown issues. “Softer, smoother, more refined, slightly bigger” is not that big of an issue. It’s a welcome improvement for most people. The current gen RAV4 is still rather noisy, audible wind noise and rattling side mirrors. Hopefully, those get corrected on the next version. Everyone already knows that the rear seating space is less than the CR-V and not as friendly when putting in rear facing child seats. Doors don’t even open wide like the CR-V and Forester. Now as for the Woodland edition, it’s been said many times but worth reiterating that the US version is quite crippled compared to the Canadian version. US version doesn’t have options for moon roof, power lift gate, leather wrapped heated steering wheel, heated seats, windshield de-icer, etc. The “TRD tuned suspension” was half-baked as it’s not the same TRD tuned suspension as the gas TRD Off-Road with the 8.6” of ground clearance. There are no options for metal skid plate. Even the plastic fender guards aren’t as high as the TRD off-road or Adventure/Trail models. It’s really pretty barebones. No idea what the product managers for Toyota were thinking when they made their decisions for the US Woodland version. They should at least offer packages and options that are available on the SE and XLE trims. That way people that want barebones Woodland can get that and people that want a few more packages and options can also be happy (like the Canadians).

I will wait until 2027-2028 to buy the next gen Rav4 Prime. Availability will be much better by then, which means deals should be much better as well. Also, the next gen Prime will have much better EV range, likely double the current gen.

Can’t even get a test drive on a base model around here so I sure won’t be buying one. The good news is I have a Honda Accord with only 250,000 kilometers on it and it’s only ten years old so it should be good for a few more years trouble free operation I figure.

I don't wanna offend anyone that needs child seats to fit properly especially when you have 2 or more seats you need to get a van, sienna,odyssey,carnival. After you don't need child seats cause the kid's are big then you can get a cool suv of whatever brand you want.

@feefawfern8240 yea, I have the US woodland and am jealous of the Canada one. I will say that my RAV4 appears to be of higher quality regarding the fit of the panels vs this one in the video. My panels all seem to fit tightly. Canada rav4 also has power lift gate which mine doesn't have. I think they gave Canada a better version because they stopped selling the Rav4 TRD in Canada and wanted to give them something.

@sparhawk1228 I get that. Also, an excuse to raise the price. So why not keep them optional and up-sell those so concerned about looks on their hybrid ... ... so laughable. The point of a hybrid is efficiency and economy... yet they force things that reduce efficiency and economy, with zero benefit besides "some people think it looks cool"

The new model in all likelihood, will be a substantial price increase from current one. Right now there's way too much overlap between RAV4 and Corolla Cross (Although the Cross is a bit less spacious, they are still too close). Toyota would almost definitely increase the price of RAV4 like they did with Prius and push the cost conscious buyers towards Corolla Cross. They might however introduce lower trims in Corolla Cross Hybrid to soften the blow.
