Best comparison of a Toyota compared to a Lexus I've seen. It was full of pertinent information on how you and your husband use your respective cars and how they compare and contrast in the way most of us would use them. Bravo.

I wanted an NX (hybrid) but couldn't quite afford it. Went with a RAV4 hybrid and haven't been disappointed -- it's an impressive vehicle (especially in terms of solidity and refinement) in its own right.

I 10000% agree!! The Rav is an absolutely amazing car and not just for the money but in general! And again you got more than less of the NX experience without spending anywhere near NX money so that’s a huge win too, IMO.

Hands down, this is the best car review video I've ever watched (and I've watched hundreds). Your commentary was concise and engaging, and very relevant. I currently own a Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, and for the most part I love it. However, I HATE road/wind noise and I want to buy a vehicle that minimizes both, as much as possible. I had been looking at the NX hybrid, but based on your review, I don't know if the cabin is going to be quiet enough for me. Thanks for the info!
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for such a kind comment! And yes, I would say you might want to check out the NX PHEV. It’s going to be much more refined than the NX hybrid (also considerably more expensive, though). I ended up flipping the NX in this video for a final year V8 Lexus GX which is like a bank vault or limousine on the road. It gets 1/3 the fuel economy of the NX, but… oh well.
@groussac
@groussac 6 ай бұрын
@@joshjamescars So I guess you're saying that the GX is quiet on the freeway. That appeals to me. Noise wise, my '09 CRV compares to the RAV 4 you showed us, but I would like a quieter ride during acceleration. If it were just me, I'd go for an electric something or other just for the quiet, but the wife is concerned about getting fried alive if it catches on fire. Impossible to check all the boxes...

This was the PERFECT review of both vehicles. I have widdled my choices down to the RAV 4 hybrid and the NX 350 hyrbid. So many benefits of both. MPG is almost the same if you check the website fuelly. One thing that is different is the AIR suspension on the NX vs SPRING on Rav 4. That will make the NX more comfortable ride.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 8 ай бұрын
Thank you! Have you looked at the Venza? It splits the difference between the two and is essentially a more posh RAV4 hybrid. Also, I do not recommend the new RX hybrid (I assume that’s what you were referring to). It shares the same engine as the NX350h, Rav, and Venza, and is slow and loud. See my video on it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4mYi3p-bJiZetEsi=3_B5TlNy0MpH7y1V

I appreciate your side by side comparison in that I’m in the market for a Rav4 but didn’t know whether a Lexus was worth so much more. I became able to make a more informed decision about what really matters to me most between the two cars. I’ve known a Lexus is an upscaled Toyota and this video helped me to understand I wouldn’t miss anything by buying a Rav4 as I plan to m. It’s definitely more economical.

I’m so glad it was helpful! If you’re in the market for a Rav hybrid and if having a little more premium is of interest, I would also take a look at the Toyota Venza. It’s built on the same platform as these two so it’s the same size and shares the same engine. Cheers!

The best comparison video I have watched so far. Nothing beats real life experience. You have to use cars as a daily driver to really be able to tell what the deal is. I have a 2021 RAV4 hybrid awd which I’m very pleased about. We are a family of three and it’s just the perfect size. Anything smaller would be not enough anything larger is a nuisance when you have to drive into town especially since were living in Germany where everything from parking to roads is smaller. The only problem I have is that here in Germany the RAV4 is not a very good value because it is insanely priced. And mine is a special model called Black Edition, which means it has everything that is usually silver or unpainted plastic is painted in the same special black with glitter in it, then the rest of the car. The undercarriage parts of the bumper, the back and everything else and it has special 19 inch alloy wheels, which no other RAV4 model in Germany has. So mine is not fully loaded. It lacks the sunroof, the heated rear seats, the memory function for the driver seat for example and it still did cost €53,000. A fully loaded Prime would’ve cost €70,000. You are very lucky with the prices you’re paying for Toyota and Lexus vehicles 😮😊

Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words and you for watching! And oh my gosh at the price of a Rav4 in Germany!! I’m a big fan of German cars, I have to say. But a close call. (Please add Canadian prices and fuel economy). 🇨🇦

Thank you so much! And for coming back to watch another video!! You really can’t beat the Rav on price and value, it’s such a terrific car! And great recco! I’ll have to figure out what your prices are and what the differences are. I believe, though I might be wrong, in Canada the trims we get on Toyotas are packages and the Lexus packages we get are trims. And from others who have commented, your “luxury” trim on the NX is more or less our “premium” package since you have the executive trim above that (I think). So absolutely can and will do but I’m sure I’ll get things wrong. 😅

As some others have pointed out, the Venza is a nice alternative that kind of splits the difference between the NX and the RAV 4 - hoping for a Venza Prime someday. How does your NX450H+ ride? Is it rough like a Rav 4? My wife and I are considering the plug-in hybrid NX as well. I’m disappointed that they don’t come with the pano roof…. even more disappointed that the F-Sports don’t have the ML option.
@chrisstewart7147
@chrisstewart7147 Жыл бұрын
@@beri232 I’ve had mine since mid Nov 2022 and I love it. It’s eerily silent in EV mode around town. Highway noise is very low as well. You get some wind rush, but it’s not really loud. The car tames the noises very well. I think the noise issues people have are with those run-flat tires. When I had them on over 4 months the ride was compliant, but at times more stiff than what I was used to in a Lexus. Also, road noise varied by surface. It was there in the background, but not as muted as with the Michelins. I got Michelin CrossClimate 2’s. I will say the Michelin tires make a big difference vs the run-flats. I assume no pano roof as that’s too much added weight? I use EV mode around town which is 98% of the time and only use gas if I put the NX into (HV)hybrid mode or if I venture out of town. Like any Lexus/Toyota the transitions are seamless and smooth. You can’t really feel it switching over. I test drove the RZ luxury in town and out on the highway. It’s a very similar(almost an exact copy) of my vehicle going 55-60mph. Smooth and quiet. Very tranquil. Just the RZ is a pure EV with not much range. I’m not sure about the ML. If they will decide to add that or not. That wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I’ve had ML in other Lexus cars I’ve had and it’s ok. I don’t always have music on

Thank you! I think both your options are great but definitely do your homework on EV depreciation… technology is changing so rapidly (plus EVs aren’t selling to begin with) if you intend to purchase and not lease the car, you might find after 5 years it’s not worth much at all. The Rav and NX, on the other hand, will hold their value well even over time. On the flip side, you’ll be waiting a long while for a Rav Prime but if the EV6 is like the IONIQ5, there are probably a ton just sitting around on dealer lots waiting for a buyer.

Hello! Thank you so much and for coming back to watch! Insurance is a hard question to answer because soooo many other factors impact that (location, credit score, driving record, mileage, garage or not, how many cars on the policy, etc.) and so even if it’s a 5% difference that could be $5 or $50 depending on everything else. HOWEVER, for us, with good driving records, excellent credit, living in a safe neighborhood with a locked garage and having 3 cars on a policy, etc. there’s very little difference.

Great video! Its important to say that you can get an upgraded larger central screen in the new 2023 rav4 and also theres a full 12 inch digital drivers display! Btw it was kinda funny how you were mad at the person who beeped at you for going 85 mph in the left lane-here in Germany you would actually potentially get a ticket for blocking the left lane since ppl are often going 120+mph(legally) and the lane is strictly for overpassing only 😁something to keep in mind when youre visiting europe hahah!

I have driven the autobahn and let me tell you it is up there on my list of the best driving experiences I’ve ever had. And it was in a little Mercedes rental too no less! That probably wasn’t legal or allowed by the rental company but oh well. 😂 And I will say that I was doing comfortably above 85 but yeah… that road is fun when no one is around. 😁

Inventory is way better and we have a lot of good dealers who aren’t price gouging and marking things up like they are in California and that’s for both Toyota and Lexus! Cheers!

Great comparison !! Here in Mexico I was between buying the RAV4 Hybrid Limited and the CRV, but at the end decided for the RAV4 because at least here the RAV4 Hybrid Limited is about the same price as the CRV initial trim and around 5-10 k less than the CRV top trim (not hybrid since CRV hybrid is not sold in Mexico)

Wow! I had no idea that was the case there!! Absolutely Rav4 in that case! I’ve heard that the pricing on the CR-V in Canada is way off base too (way too expensive). I was looking at the CR-V before buying my NX and it’s decently priced here but missing all kinds of nice features that even the Rav4 gets, unfortunately.

Hello! Your video is the BEST I've ever watched. Easy to listen to and so informative. Thank you for taking the time to put this out for people. I've been looking at these two cars for a long time. I've had a 2011 Lexus RX 350 and it's time for safety features etc. Can you speak to the ease of using the infotainment system in both cars? I'm an older driver and want ease (as well as all safety features.). Also, in Los Angeles, the dealers are marking up the Rav4 Hybrid (higher trim levels) to outrageous levels. I'm leaning toward the Lexus NX 350h for this reason.

Hello! You are so very kind, thank you! I’m glad it was helpful and enjoyable! I think if you’re coming from an RX, you should definitely consider the NX. The Rav is a great car, but I think the NX is going to give you the more premium experience you’re used to. Hybrids drive a little differently than the 3.5 V6 that you have now, but the fuel economy is terrific. As for the infotainment, you’re going to get the latest and greatest in the NX. I do wish there were more physical buttons but I think it’s easy and intuitive enough to learn and use over time. But it’s worth going to the dealer and playing with it in a new NX, RX, or RZ (same system and controls in all 3 cars). The Rav’s interior and infotainment as a whole is starting to feel dated as it goes back to 2019 when the Rav came out. The upside there is you do have physical climate controls, but I’d take the Lexus’ interior over the Rav’s for everything else. The NX will definitely feel more modern for much longer. It also gets the newer Toyota/Lexus safety sense 3.0 system which is one of the best if not the best on the market. Lane keep and adaptive cruise control work beautifully and are far more nuanced than on the 2.5 system found in the RAV4. And of course, like you said, it’s ridiculous to pay anything above MSRP on a Rav4.

Great comparison, thanks for all the videos posted, I also opted for the NX. Apparently, sometime in the summer of 2024, I should get it, I hope😅 . I do not have the opportunity and funds for a second car at the moment and the choice had to fall on the NX. It is a bit smaller, but it will have to be used for everything that would be a bigger car, bigger, sometimes dirty luggage, sometimes 4 adults, and even 5, and maybe sleeping 😀. But I fit, I checked it in the Lexus showroom😎. Apart from the size, the NX is as practical as the RAV4, which I like a lot.

Oh my gosh are you in Canada or elsewhere outside the US? Summer of 2024 is a ridiculously long wait for an NX, I really hope it comes sooner for you!! But fantastic choice and I think you’ll absolutely love it. The third adult in the back seat might not love it, but that’s okay. 🤣 Hopefully that won’t have to happen too often. I will say that the price difference for the RX isn’t big at all, in fact there was a nice RX350h at the dealer recently for only $1,000 more than I paid for mine. It didn’t have the HUD or digital mirror, but it had the 14” screen and a moonroof. While you wait, you might want to think on that since you’ll be using your car for a lot of utility! I think it might be worth a few thousand more in your case.

Hello! There are two things you can do. If your car came with an auto-dimming mirror, you can just order the auto-dimming mirror with home link since you already have the power line that runs to the mirror. Check with your dealer for part number and pricing. Or, if your car came with the regular, manually-dimming mirror, you can get this part which is an OEM Toyota accessory that gives you a home link remote on the mirror (it’s about $150): PT374-00210

Thank you Josh, great comparison. We are weighing one or the other of these. It seems like the major differences would be: NX: less space inside, noticeably quieter, nicer materials; RAV: available plug-in; slightly noisier; less plush inside. But the overall driving characteristics are very similar. Is this right? Any other words of wisdom? Regarding tires, if the NX comes with run flats, does the RAV come with tubed tires and a spare?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 8 ай бұрын
Yes! You’re pretty much spot on. Though, I don’t think I’d say noticeably quieter. It’s maybe 20% quieter, and I would expect more from Lexus. But, this is entry-level premium not luxury, so it’s acceptable. I will tell you that I flipped mine after 6 months because I didn’t feel like I fully got my money’s worth (got almost all of my money back though LOL!). Check out the video on my channel about why we flipped it. As for the tires, the Rav does come with a spare but no car tire today has tubes, they’re all tubeless, but runflats allow you to run even while the tire is flat. I think my words of wisdom to you may be to split the difference between the two and go with a Venza.

@joshjamescars

Hello. That all depends on the wheels and tires on the car. The NX has a stiffer ride and heavier steering because it’s tuned to be sportier, but both will ride nicely with smaller wheels and higher profile tires. You have to test drive them both to see how they compare for you, though.

Currently driving my brother’s 2022 Prius hybrid because my 2007 Lexus IS250 has transmission issues (brother is deployed so he let me drive his) and the one thing I really miss and don’t think I’ll get over is the sound insulation. Having driven a Lexus all my adult life, quiet driving is all I’ve known and that set the standard. I did have my eyes set on the RAV4 Hybrid but the poor noise insulation may be a dealbreaker for me. Hopefully there’s a Lexus (or Toyota) alternative that has what I’m looking for. Thanks for this very informative review!
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 10 ай бұрын
Hello! Best wishes to your brother for a safe tour and return home and thanks to him for his service! As for the car, I’m in the same boat as you. And I haven’t even just had Lexus, but older Toyotas that I’ve had were better insulated and or had engines that didn’t make as much noise. It’s a big down side to smaller, more efficient engines. What you might want to do is buy a new IS350 while you can still get one with the V6, which may only be this year and next. That’ll give you a very similar feeling to your 07 IS. The NX Hybrid would be another to look at given that it is more refined but the 4-cylinder still gets loud. You might also look at a certified Highlander or RX with the V6 if you want an SUV. Unfortunately there aren’t too many compact Toyotas or Lexuses that are as refined as their older cars. It sounds weird but might also look at the Honda CR-V Sport Touring. See my video here on that because the new generation is seriously impressive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZDTmKZ4i8SbrZI

Hi, thanks so much for this video. I had a question, what’s the difference in cost of maintenance (changing oil/tires/etc) and insurance coverage between the two? I’d love to get the Lexus but concerned it may have a higher cost at the mechanic given it’s considered a luxury car. Thanks for your time.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
It’s really hard to give you a figure on that because there are soooo many factors at play. Insurance is all dependent upon your area, your driving record, your credit score, and more; but I’ll say that it’s under $75/month for me BUT we have 3 cars all on the same plan which makes things cheaper just like a family phone plan. Most insurance companies will also let you run a quote if you can get a VIN for an NX which you could probably get from a dealer. Maintenance all depends on how and how much you drive and whether you have a Lexus dealer who prices things fairly or if they Jack up their rate because they think they’re a luxury car brand and thus can charge the same labor rates as Mercedes/Audi/BMW for maintenance. That said, Toyota will give you two years of free oil changes. You can also put cheap tires on either car (though I wouldn’t recommend it) so tire cost is entirely dependent on what you’re willing to pay for. By and large, I don’t think it’s that big a difference (not like one will be tens of thousands more) but because so much depends on your locale, dealers, and driving needs its hard to say.

Great and honest review, I hate fake leather though, I prefer leather to be leather, and if I don’t want leather, I’d prefer velour or regular cloth seats, this faux leather reminds me of my fathers old cars back in the day with the vinyl seats that smelled cheap and got too hot on a sunny day.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
I totally get not liking faux leather and absolutely do what is going to make you happy but for me it’s the best of both worlds. Far more resilient than cloth or leather and keeps its shape since it’s bonded to the seat padding. Not to mention how much better it’ll look compared to even the best kept leather in 5 years when I go to sell this car. That said, if this was an actual luxury car like an LS or a Cayenne, it would have to be leather but the NX is a cheap little economical crossover so I’m good with it here.

The Venza does have a moonroof, but it doesn’t open. It’s what’s called a fixed glass roof. Which is good and bad-you’re less likely to have leaks later on since nothing ever moves. But, I love to have my moonroof open on sunny days. As for hybrids, we’re at a point where buying a hybrid is a super safe bet. The best bet you can make, actually. Toyota’s general hybrid system architecture has actually been out since 1997 when the original Prius came out, so we are essentially 25 years in and they’ve refined it to perfection. As a result, Toyota hybrids are consistently ranked more reliable than gas models (you can read about that in Consumer Reports). And because of how long hybrids have been around, the cost of replacing a battery is far, far less than it was 10 years ago. You’re also more likely to have to replace a transmission on a gas car than a battery on a hybrid car. And yes! They hold their value wonderfully. In fact, as you may see in the comments here, hybrids are in such high demand right now that if you decided to sell before the car is too old, you’re likely to not lose any money at all. Even longer term, you can look up values of old Rav4 hybrids and Priuses and they hold a lot of their value because of Toyota reliability and hybrid efficiency. Everyone wants one, the values stay high. I think a Rav or Venza hybrid would be a perfect car if it’s going to mainly be you. They’ve got great space and utility should you ever need it, but they’re still compact enough to drive and park easily.

@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 8 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you! I have linked my first take video on the RX hybrid at the end of the comment, go take a look at that. Those are such different cars (the RX and Rav). If you think you would or could be happy with the Rav I would honestly save the money and just go with the Rav. You could also do the new Venza too, that’s the same platform as the Rav but a much more elegant inside and outside. Actually reminds me a lot of the older RXs. My problem with the new RX is that they’re downgraded all the engines to 4-cylinders, so unlike your RX400h, the new RX now shares the same engine with the Rav4 hybrid. And the pricing on the new RX could easily be $20K more than a Rav or Venza ($60K versus $40K for the Rav or Venza) which I don’t think is worth it for the new, smaller engine. Now, you say you’re handicapped and so I want you to go and find one at a dealer new or used and get in and test drive it to make sure you can comfortably get in and out, and if you use any kind of assistive devices (wheelchair, walker, oxygen tank, etc.) make sure it’s not too hard to load those either. Good luck with your search! Here’s the RX video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4mYi3p-bJiZetEsi=lkJIsfnyYHk5A0QB
