@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
I 10000% agree!! The Rav is an absolutely amazing car and not just for the money but in general! And again you got more than less of the NX experience without spending anywhere near NX money so that’s a huge win too, IMO.

@DamnManSam5 ай бұрын
@@justinlikesme19Not really, the NX is mechanically similar to the RAV4 I believe they share the same engine and underpinnings. I own a 2011 IS, and mechanically it costs about the same to fix as a Camry, all the way down to the break pads. Now, when it comes to replacing headlights, doors, etc. Yes the premium materials, and better tech will make the Lexus a tad more expensive to fix.

I can't afford the NX, but I don't see the Rav4 as utilitarian vehicle. For me it's a floating palace, and I've never owned such a beautiful comfortable vehicle before. I absolutely love it.

@joshjamescarsАй бұрын
@gotzz84 It depends what kind of driving you’re doing. If it’s all road trip driving then I would say don’t buy the NX at all because it doesn’t have a spare tire. But if it’s mostly city driving and you can plug in at night at home, you might be better off with the plug-in (but do the calculations on how much the cost for energy will be). With any kind of electrified vehicle you have to really do the math to figure out what’s “worth the money” for you.

Thank you! Have you looked at the Venza? It splits the difference between the two and is essentially a more posh RAV4 hybrid. Also, I do not recommend the new RX hybrid (I assume that’s what you were referring to). It shares the same engine as the NX350h, Rav, and Venza, and is slow and loud. The best comparison video I have watched so far. Nothing beats real life experience. You have to use cars as a daily driver to really be able to tell what the deal is. I have a 2021 RAV4 hybrid awd which I’m very pleased about. We are a family of three and it’s just the perfect size. Anything smaller would be not enough anything larger is a nuisance when you have to drive into town especially since were living in Germany where everything from parking to roads is smaller. The only problem I have is that here in Germany the RAV4 is not a very good value because it is insanely priced. And mine is a special model called Black Edition, which means it has everything that is usually silver or unpainted plastic is painted in the same special black with glitter in it, then the rest of the car. The undercarriage parts of the bumper, the back and everything else and it has special 19 inch alloy wheels, which no other RAV4 model in Germany has. So mine is not fully loaded. It lacks the sunroof, the heated rear seats, the memory function for the driver seat for example and it still did cost €53,000. A fully loaded Prime would’ve cost €70,000. You are very lucky with the prices you’re paying for Toyota and Lexus vehicles 😮😊

How does your NX450H+ ride? Is it rough like a Rav 4? My wife and I are considering the plug-in hybrid NX as well. I’m disappointed that they don’t come with the pano roof…. even more disappointed that the F-Sports don’t have the ML option.
@chrisstewart7147 Жыл бұрын
@@beri232 I’ve had mine since mid Nov 2022 and I love it. It’s eerily silent in EV mode around town. Highway noise is very low as well. You get some wind rush, but it’s not really loud. The car tames the noises very well. I think the noise issues people have are with those run-flat tires. When I had them on over 4 months the ride was compliant, but at times more stiff than what I was used to in a Lexus. Also, road noise varied by surface. It was there in the background, but not as muted as with the Michelins. I got Michelin CrossClimate 2’s. I will say the Michelin tires make a big difference vs the run-flats. I assume no pano roof as that’s too much added weight? I use EV mode around town which is 98% of the time and only use gas if I put the NX into (HV)hybrid mode or if I venture out of town. Like any Lexus/Toyota the transitions are seamless and smooth. You can’t really feel it switching over. I test drove the RZ luxury in town and out on the highway. It’s a very similar(almost an exact copy) of my vehicle going 55-60mph. Smooth and quiet. Very tranquil. Just the RZ is a pure EV with not much range. I’m not sure about the ML. If they will decide to add that or not. That wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I’ve had ML in other Lexus cars I’ve had and it’s ok. I don’t always have music on

I believe, though I might be wrong, in Canada the trims we get on Toyotas are packages and the Lexus packages we get are trims. Thank you! I think both your options are great but definitely do your homework on EV depreciation… technology is changing so rapidly (plus EVs aren’t selling to begin with) if you intend to purchase and not lease the car, you might find after 5 years it’s not worth much at all. The Rav and NX, on the other hand, will hold their value well even over time. @joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
I totally get not liking faux leather and absolutely do what is going to make you happy but for me it’s the best of both worlds. Far more resilient than cloth or leather and keeps its shape since it’s bonded to the seat padding. Not to mention how much better it’ll look compared to even the best kept leather in 5 years when I go to sell this car. That said, if this was an actual luxury car like an LS or a Cayenne, it would have to be leather but the NX is a cheap little economical crossover so I’m good with it here.

We bought a Toyota Crown and Grand Highlander within two weeks of each other in March. One is for my spouse and the grand for get togethers with family so we all can be together during commutes when family is visiting. The Crown hybrid is about 39 mpg. The Grand, 36 mpg. I then wanted to get my long commute car with good mpg but also a quiet cabin cuz there are times I'm conducting business in the car with 4 hours a day. The RAV prime was perfect for economy and good mpg. But the car seems unsteady (important driving in snowstorms for essential personnel like me). It was also way too loud. But I confess that I still wish the RAV worked out. I love the look of it. However, the CRV beats it in everyway except for design. So i opted out of those two reliable, economy cars. Since I now have a Grand Highlander and Crown, both have great sound insulation and premium interiors, it was difficult to get use to the RAV. Lexus for me.

I will say that the price difference for the RX isn’t big at all, in fact there was a nice RX350h at the dealer recently for only $1,000 more than I paid for mine. It didn’t have the HUD or digital mirror, but it had the 14” screen and a moonroof. While you wait, you might want to think on that since you’ll be using your car for a lot of utility! I think it might be worth a few thousand more in your case.

Great comparison !! Here in Mexico I was between buying the RAV4 Hybrid Limited and the CRV, but at the end decided for the RAV4 because at least here the RAV4 Hybrid Limited is about the same price as the CRV initial trim and around 5-10 k less than the CRV top trim (not hybrid since CRV hybrid is not sold in Mexico)
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Wow! I had no idea that was the case there!! Absolutely Rav4 in that case! I’ve heard that the pricing on the CR-V in Canada is way off base too (way too expensive). I was looking at the CR-V before buying my NX and it’s decently priced here but missing all kinds of nice features that even the Rav4 gets, unfortunately.

Wow, Great video. I pick up my NX350H tomorrow. I am trading in my 2015 Rav4 which I loved. I just wanna treat myself because I'm single and work so darn hard. I deserve and never had a luxury vehicle. also, this will be my retirement car. I just hope I don't miss the large cargo space I used to have w/the rav4. I own a home and I was able to load anything in that car. Freezer, carpet, lrg bag of catfoods ect.

Congratulations and happy retirement!! If you ever do need more space than the NX has, you can always rent a bigger SUV since I assume if you’re hauling that much you wouldn’t want to get your Lexus dirty ;)

Shopped the Rav 4 but with back facing car seat and being 5-11 we couldn't justify it. The passenger seat would need to be way forward. Went with Highlander and it was perfect size. Defintely size up if possible and for the 2/3 years of back facing car seat as it just takes more room.
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Great choice!! I totally agree, for families the Highlander is a much better choice. Plus you’ll be able to comfortably carry around other kids and grandparents, etc. Even without kids I would never want to be without a midsize SUV.

Crown Signia is great but it’s a midsize station wagon and has a much larger footprint (10 inches longer) than the NX which is a compact crossover.

Well done. And very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison. When comparing insurance for each, should one expect a big difference in cost or somewhat similar?
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you so much and for coming back to watch! Insurance is a hard question to answer because soooo many other factors impact that (location, credit score, driving record, mileage, garage or not, how many cars on the policy, etc.) and so even if it’s a 5% difference that could be $5 or $50 depending on everything else. HOWEVER, for us, with good driving records, excellent credit, living in a safe neighborhood with a locked garage and having 3 cars on a policy, etc. there’s very little difference.

I find your comments very helpful. My complaint about the RAV4 was interior noise at highway speeds. Seems that I will experience much the same in the NX. Guess I should move up!!
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
I’m so glad they were helpful! And I should be clear, the road nose isn’t as bad in the NX, but the engine noise is about the same. Depending on what you’re coming from or tested, one thing I always say is that hybrids or turbo-4s are never as refined as the good old V6s that used to be in the RX, ES, etc. If you’re shopping in this category, I might also recommend you look at the CR-V. The new 2023 model, especially the Sport Touring is amazingly refined and quiet on the highway, believe it or not. Plus it has active noise cancellation and resonance reducing wheels.

Then the Venza is the perfect car for you!! Seriously, it’s the best of both worlds and I think will fit your taste and budget. I was actually trying to get one before I got my NX but there weren’t any at the time that had what I wanted on them.
@Brandiafinegirl62 Жыл бұрын
@@joshjamescars thank you for the advice. I'm a retired and divorced woman who is afraid of making the wrong decision. Does the Venza have a moonroof option? I'm very afraid of buying a hybrid. Do they have good resale value? I worry about such an expensive battery.
@Brandiafinegirl62 Жыл бұрын
@@joshjamescars thank you so much for your response. You are very sweet.
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
The Venza does have a moonroof, but it doesn’t open. It’s what’s called a fixed glass roof. Which is good and bad-you’re less likely to have leaks later on since nothing ever moves. But, I love to have my moonroof open on sunny days. As for hybrids, we’re at a point where buying a hybrid is a super safe bet. The best bet you can make, actually. Toyota’s general hybrid system architecture has actually been out since 1997 when the original Prius came out, so we are essentially 25 years in and they’ve refined it to perfection. As a result, Toyota hybrids are consistently ranked more reliable than gas models (you can read about that in Consumer Reports). And because of how long hybrids have been around, the cost of replacing a battery is far, far less than it was 10 years ago. You’re also more likely to have to replace a transmission on a gas car than a battery on a hybrid car. And yes! They hold their value wonderfully. In fact, as you may see in the comments here, hybrids are in such high demand right now that if you decided to sell before the car is too old, you’re likely to not lose any money at all. Even longer term, you can look up values of old Rav4 hybrids and Priuses and they hold a lot of their value because of Toyota reliability and hybrid efficiency. Everyone wants one, the values stay high. I think a Rav or Venza hybrid would be a perfect car if it’s going to mainly be you. They’ve got great space and utility should you ever need it, but they’re still compact enough to drive and park easily.

Hello! Your video is the BEST I've ever watched. Easy to listen to and so informative. Thank you for taking the time to put this out for people. I've been looking at these two cars for a long time. I've had a 2011 Lexus RX 350 and it's time for safety features etc. Can you speak to the ease of using the infotainment system in both cars? I'm an older driver and want ease (as well as all safety features.). Also, in Los Angeles, the dealers are marking up the Rav4 Hybrid (higher trim levels) to outrageous levels. I'm leaning toward the Lexus NX 350h for this reason.
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! You are so very kind, thank you! I’m glad it was helpful and enjoyable! I think if you’re coming from an RX, you should definitely consider the NX. The Rav is a great car, but I think the NX is going to give you the more premium experience you’re used to. Hybrids drive a little differently than the 3.5 V6 that you have now, but the fuel economy is terrific. As for the infotainment, you’re going to get the latest and greatest in the NX. I do wish there were more physical buttons but I think it’s easy and intuitive enough to learn and use over time. But it’s worth going to the dealer and playing with it in a new NX, RX, or RZ (same system and controls in all 3 cars). The Rav’s interior and infotainment as a whole is starting to feel dated as it goes back to 2019 when the Rav came out. The upside there is you do have physical climate controls, but I’d take the Lexus’ interior over the Rav’s for everything else. The NX will definitely feel more modern for much longer. It also gets the newer Toyota/Lexus safety sense 3.0 system which is one of the best if not the best on the market. Lane keep and adaptive cruise control work beautifully and are far more nuanced than on the 2.5 system found in the RAV4. And of course, like you said, it’s ridiculous to pay anything above MSRP on a Rav4.

Thanks for the comparison was a good watch. I just bought a Lexus nx 350 gas. I come from a 2021 lease rogue and I did not like the feel of a cvt. Coming to a nx was amazing in everything, and yes I assume that cvt are much better in Toyota and Lexus but I noticed the difference in gas model. I wish they had a v6 but hey it is what it, market is going for turbo because of the regulations for emissions so that's what we have in this economy. So I'm enjoying the gas version and yes I pay more in gas but I prefer the feel of the gas then cvt. And this little nx has the same gas engine as a rx and TX! Insane power for this!
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
Hello! Congrats on the new NX! Just one quick correction-the hybrids don’t use a CVT, they use an ECVT which is completely different than the belt and pulley CVT in your Rogue. The marketing terminology is confusing to many people, but the ECVT is planetary power split gear which is more similar to the single speed reduction gearset in a full EV.

Currently driving my brother’s 2022 Prius hybrid because my 2007 Lexus IS250 has transmission issues (brother is deployed so he let me drive his) and the one thing I really miss and don’t think I’ll get over is the sound insulation. Having driven a Lexus all my adult life, quiet driving is all I’ve known and that set the standard. I did have my eyes set on the RAV4 Hybrid but the poor noise insulation may be a dealbreaker for me. Hopefully there’s a Lexus (or Toyota) alternative that has what I’m looking for. Thanks for this very informative review!
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! Best wishes to your brother for a safe tour and return home and thanks to him for his service! As for the car, I’m in the same boat as you. And I haven’t even just had Lexus, but older Toyotas that I’ve had were better insulated and or had engines that didn’t make as much noise. It’s a big down side to smaller, more efficient engines. What you might want to do is buy a new IS350 while you can still get one with the V6, which may only be this year and next. That’ll give you a very similar feeling to your 07 IS. The NX Hybrid would be another to look at given that it is more refined but the 4-cylinder still gets loud. You might also look at a certified Highlander or RX with the V6 if you want an SUV. Unfortunately there aren’t too many compact Toyotas or Lexuses that are as refined as their older cars. It sounds weird but might also look at the Honda CR-V Sport Touring. See my video here on that because the new generation is seriously impressive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZDTmKZ4i8SbrZI

Thank you Josh, great comparison. We are weighing one or the other of these. It seems like the major differences would be: NX: less space inside, noticeably quieter, nicer materials; RAV: available plug-in; slightly noisier; less plush inside. But the overall driving characteristics are very similar. Is this right? Any other words of wisdom? Regarding tires, if the NX comes with run flats, does the RAV come with tubed tires and a spare?
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Yes! You’re pretty much spot on. Though, I don’t think I’d say noticeably quieter. It’s maybe 20% quieter, and I would expect more from Lexus. But, this is entry-level premium not luxury, so it’s acceptable. I will tell you that I flipped mine after 6 months because I didn’t feel like I fully got my money’s worth (got almost all of my money back though LOL!). Check out the video on my channel about why we flipped it. As for the tires, the Rav does come with a spare but no car tire today has tubes, they’re all tubeless, but runflats allow you to run even while the tire is flat. I think my words of wisdom to you may be to split the difference between the two and go with a Venza.
