I used to sell outdoor furniture... In the deep suburbs of Calgary! Here we go: 1. Agree on the sunbrella fabric. Amazing. I would not buy any outdoor furniture requiring fabric without sunbrella, and they have amazing colour options. 2. Plastic rattan: a bit ugly and icky, but very necessary here in Calgary. Unless you can store your furniture indoors, the perpetual freeze-thaw Chinook cycle that happens 2-6 times a month causes moisture to soak into natural fibers(wood, rattan, cotton/linen) during warm periods(Chinook), and then freeze - the water expands and causes cracks. Even covered, the moisture still gets in and freezes. We sold natural woods and wicker furniture, however it was either for indoor use or it had to be stored indoors over the winter - and that much storage space is luxurious. Plastic/acrylic/metal doesn't suffer from that, unless you paint it and then, well, you get bistro table - which may look like 40 years of neglect but that really looked more like 2 Calgarian winters worth of neglect. (it's also why the roads here suck - most places experience one or two freeze-thaw cycles per winter whereas we get multiple years' worth of freeze-thaw cycles in one winter) Outdoor furniture is tough here because products that may work well in places like Vancouver would fall apart in Calgary in a couple of winters. But all in all, agree with you here. One day I hope I can invest in some nice pieces but until then, garage sale specials for my home!

Environment counts for a lot. That’s why we have tiki huts and gazebos in Southern Florida that local Native Americans build for us as they’ve been doing for a thousand years or more. They’re exclusively licensed to build them and they’re so beautiful.
@crystalrowan6 ай бұрын
I posted a very similar comment regarding the plastic rattan material but for the opposite scenario: I'm in Florida and the extremely high moisture levels and heat totally requires that you either store your furniture indoors (which as you point out - is basically impossible unless you have a mansion, lol) or buy the plastic rattan. Even covering it won't save true wood materials outdoors!

It’s actually an extension of both Calvinist culture in France first and then later Shaker practice in the United States. Both religions believe that waste is sinful and that when cutting trees down for wood to make furniture people have taken a gift provided to man from G-d so when a piece of furniture becomes old and beyond the point of being worthy of re-stained, if still possible both groups believe in preserving the piece if it can be painted and that’s why there’s so much authentic French and Shaker furniture that’s painted but still in structurally strong condition as neither group would build anything but quality workmanship for the reason that the would was a gift. Anyway that’s where the original style has its origins. Sending my best.

I bought a solid, heavy, white pedestal drink table the size of the wooden one you showed. I came up with a pretty good solution to help avoid it from easily tipping over, otherwise I would have returned it. I took a white ceramic salad plate (with a slight diameter bigger than the bottom of the base of the table) that has a round edge in bottom center of it, placed it upside down, put a piece of UHU extra strong glue pad (easily removable, reusable, and can be purchased at Staples or Amazon), and sat the bottom base of table on top of it. It fit like a glove! The table blends right in with the plate, and by looking at it, it looks like it's just the design of the table. It actually looks great!

Years ago, I was the Advancement Chairperson for our sons’ Cub Scout Pack. It was a very large pack, with several dens, so there were loads of badges, belt loops, stars, arrow points, etc. to track for advancement purposes. At the end of the year, there was always an awards ceremony to celebrate the scouts’ advancements, as well as to honor the adults who put in long hours. The Pack leader asked me to come to the stage, where he discussed my time and efforts, and then ‘awarded’ me with a garden gnome! What the flip! It was the ugliest, creepiest thing I’d ever seen, and now I was holding this heavy 10-inch tall resin abomination ‘award’. Of course, I graciously accepted it. I placed it in my side yard, out by some ferns, hoping the weather would give it a gradual death. A year later, I received ANOTHER one of these hideous gnomes. Now I had two that I exposed to the elements. FIFTEEN years went by, and they both continued to look like they were brand new, probably because I’d placed them on the north side of the house, where they got no direct sunlight. My husband’s job was being transferred nearly 1,000 miles away. What to do with the gnomes? While walking our dog each evening, I noticed a yard (about a mile away) in the neighborhood, where the homeowner had collected and displayed a number of gnomes. Over the years, she’d cycle out the old, weathered, and chipped fellows with replacements. I kept telling my husband that my little ‘monsters’ would look right at home with their ‘brethren’. Aha! My gnomes would have a new home after all, and it wouldn’t be with us 1,000 miles away. I wrote a silly anonymous note (I didn’t identify myself) to the homeowner, in the ‘voice’ of the larger gnome, explaining how they were at risk for pending abandonment, and if they could possibly be adopted and welcomed into the existing family in their front yard garden? I rolled the note, rubber-banded it to the large gnome, walked over to their house in the dead of night, and placed both gnomes on their front door mat, so they were the first thing greeting the neighbors when they picked up their morning newspaper. We drove by the house a few days later as we were leaving the city for our last time, and yes, they were welcomed into the ‘family’! It’s been nearly 6 years since our move. Our adult son, who still lives in that city, will occasionally drive through the old neighborhood, and he reports that the two gnomes are still present in the yard, and continue to look just as new as ever - no chips, no cracks, no color fading.

When we were first married my husband insisted upon a glass coffee table. Fast forward 30 years and I can count on one hand how many times he's cleaned the damn table. Needless to say, I take his decorating suggestions with a grain of salt.

I just love how you so naturally put a very funny line (a real billy laugh) in your videos . Always so informative, thanks for all your research!

I loved the outdoor sectionals part! I got a good laugh at that because I recently had my deck redone and purchased nice furniture, not cheap plastic! Teak is one of my favorite outdoor furniture materials!

It's like you were examining my most recent online history and saw some of the same things. That crackled finish on the bistro set. I have seen that one. Now I am in a bit of a conundrum regarding patio furniture since moving from MN to FL. Now I have to deal with wood rotting and termites. I guess the plastic wicker makes sense in that regard. But I hate it too. Def always read those specs! Thanks for posting.

I have that little metal set and they come in other colors. I have it in solid pink and it is in my screened porch. For the price it has been perfect. I live in Florida and rain storms blow in so I didn’t want to spend a lot and for six years it still looks new. Since it is in a covered area it has never been in direct sun. It is used year round.

I bought two outdoor on wayfair last year they advertised as having Sunbrella fabric. They were indeed NOT Sunbrella. I called and they almost wouldn’t take them back or wouldn’t do free returns, but finally did. My first and last time buying on wayfair.

⭐️Hilarious and such good advice! Nick knows what he’s talking about people! I’ve bought one thing from WF. A $39 “gold” candle holder. The funniest thing about that? There was a $1 price tag on it. 😂

YEP! Electric shock every time I sat in those plastic rattan chairs! Nightmare! Got rid of it very quickly.

Bought a demilune hall table from Wayfair. Had it 3 years and the leg fell off. Bought a Harden solid cherry demilune table second hand. Refinished it with chalk paint to match my decor and that thing isnt ever falling apart. Fast furniture, ugh. Lesson learned.

I have the plastic, rattan patio set with Sunbrella fabric cushions. I know it is very basic but it has held up really well for years. I hose it down each spring and we really like it for our covered patio.

Thank you for call out the over the tip ridiculousness that the gnomes have gotten to! Small note on the boucle - when this trend first started I knew it would be short lived and overdone. Best way to manage things like this is: timeless upholstered pieces with boucle throw pillows. Get the look without the high cost and change it out easy & quick when the fad is over.

My neighbors ( in Florida) have their entire front rock lawn of gnomes. Thank goodness they're snowbirds. I sent my sister a picture and what do you think she did ....yes...sent me one as a Christmas gift. Now that darn gnome stares at me from the kitchen window sill🤣🤨🙄
