I’m learning that things take time and it probably will look better that way, too. It’s the journey and process of “perfecting” our spaces and as much as I really want it all to be done at once, it truly does take time.

Hi Nick, I gave a colleague a lift to a conference. She was running late and invited me into her home. The entire home, at least the first floor where I visited, was completely filled with Disney decor. Her family room had cathedral ceilings. The walls were clad, floor to ceiling, with framed Disney art. The living room was filled with free standing curio cabinets ONLY that were stuffed with THOUSANDS of porcelain Disney characters. The dropped cupboards in the kitchen…you guessed it…topped with hundreds of Disney characters. The refrigerator was covered in Disney magnets. The curtains above the sink…Disney print! That is just the tip of the iceberg in this 3000+ square foot home. Truth be told, I felt startled by the experience as if I was let inside the lair of a deranged movie character.

There are people that love the neutrals and go into ecstasy over 12 shades of beige. Not me. But as Nick says you do you. You can do the same principles such as best quality material you can afford, shopped second hand whenever possible, and still embrace jewel tones, and saturated color. Just build slowly so you can stop and live with it for a bit before adding more. Also, remember things like the color wheel to get a sense of colors that work well together and keep in mind the point of the room. Do you want to get energized for the start of the day? Do you want to relax and be in a soothing place? See how different colors affect you. I am all about greens/blues/even purples they just make me happy. Yellow makes me want to cry. Other people LOVE yellow. There is no right answer it is truly all about how it makes you feel.

I personally really like Homesense, aka TJMaxx, aka Marshalls. Of course not everything, or even most things there are going to be wins. However, the point of those stores isn't to be a currated collection like other places like west elm, crate and barrel, pottery barn or whatever, they literally market themselves as a treasure hunt, as in you know you have to hunt and dig around to find great stuff for really, really good prices sometimes. This, as well as for some of the basics that you mentioned in this video, is why I like Homesense/HomeGoods. Maybe if I was rich I wouldn't care to put the effort to hunt for the more affordable finds at these stores, cause I would be able to shop in the expensive curated stores that you can.

@@stacey8346 Exactly! With the rise of social media influencers and those said influencers living sometimes fake and pretentious lives all online for others to oooh and awww over, people are more caught up on the prices of things than ever. Everyone wants luxury this or luxury that. That's fine if you can afford it. However, not everyone can or want to spend that type of money on things when you can find things just as nice at more budget-friendly places.

Just here to agree with the recommendation of Lodge - I have a few Lodge cast iron pieces (dutch ovens primarily) and they are WORKHORSES. Really, really impressed with the quality at that price point. I have baked bread in my Lodge dutch oven, I've made hours-long ragu in it (in the oven).....and it's still going strong and has a lovely patina on the interior. Such a good value.

My favorite find at Home Goods was two short vases with a pair of faux peonies in them, in the clearance section, $12/each. I put coloured stones (to act like craft foam), and bought silk flowers at Michael’s. I adulterated the existing peonies with coordinating flowers and greenery. Nice touch in the bedroom, imo.

My biggest homesense regret is a purchase I didn't make: a large white ceramic bowl in the style of vintage ironstone. It was kind of thick and unadorned with a classic, rolled rim shape. It was unapologetically farmhouse in a good way, very humble and beautiful. I should never have left it on the shelf and although I look for it all the time, ive never seen it again. P.S. and I live on a farm so don't come for me.

Dear Nick, I NEVER EVER leave comments.... EVER.....but you have forced me to do so. I just giggled and laughed and enjoyed this "Buy this not that....Homesense" more than I have enjoyed any episode, and I truly enjoy all of your videos! You nailed it on the head. I actually love going to Homegoods.....but it's more of a "treasure hunt" because when I finally find something that isn't bedazzled or making a "confirmation statement" I'm like "wooo hooo" and I think you know what I mean! I know that if we were to go to Homegoods together we would both gravitate to the same items and we would giggle at the ones we are still wondering "who is going to buy this?" I also have WAY too many wooden spoons and I LOVE LOVE America's test kitchen....so there's that! Love that you are "real" or at least you come across as "real" -so don't stop doing what you are doing! Thanks for the giggle! -G

I am an interior designer. Trends come and go and they are impossible to keep up with. I question my clients about what they like and proceed from there. Their opinions should be taken into consideration. I actually found a very nice piece of cased Crystal at HomeGoods. I paid $300 for it but it was worth hundreds more. I admit maybe just extremely unusual to find such a piece but I guess it was my lucky day. I would not talk down to a client. Their opinions are important.
