Buyer Beware! The Supposedly "Built" Ford C4 Transmission/Dynamic Racing Transmissions to the rescue

I have a 68 Mustang with a stroker 414 with c4 on the back of it. My brother-in-law is a transmission specialists and I watched him build mine which has hardened shafts all the clutches are Kevlar. I have a P/A salvo of P/A 6th gear planetary gear system And built me a real nice valvebody With a 3200 RPM torque converter. I have had absolutely no problems with it at all. Considering I bought a transmission through summit which was a TCI built transmission I did 2 runs and burnt 1st and 2nd gear out of it. TCI said don't do anything to it send it back here to Mississippi but I had to pay the shipping costs. So my brother-in-law and I took it apart everything in that transmission said Fomoco, all stock components. It's nice to have someone that you would know build you a high performance transmission and knowing what they're doing.

You are not the first guy that paid big bucks For a TCI C4 full of Ford Stock parts. I also got caught in that one! All the Transmission shops I talked to said a C4 is no good put a glide or a turbo 400 in your car. The glide doesn't have enough Gears for a Small block Ford, the other eats horsepower. My Broader C4 is as good as any C4 built It will handle 1000 hp.

Mylan, I have dealt with Broader Performance in the past and have used their parts which are good... but to me Dynamic is the best because Harold (aka Jr.) Is the difference! He has always taken my calls and answered my texts and has never steered me wrong!

So many different transmission people anymore, I guess it could be a good thing or a bad thing. More competition supposed to be better but in some cases you end up with three things. Best , good and mediocre at best. Nice to know.

I ran a speed shop back in the 70's and 80's. Another garage brought me a turbo 400 to rebuild. After I rebuilt it, they took it to their shop and installed it. After the install they test drove it and called to tell me it was working great. A few days later they called to tell me the trans had failed. I had them take it out and bring it back so I could make it right. When I took it apart, I found that it was full of debris. The other shop never flushed the trans cooler, lines, or converter, and all that crap totally plugged the trans.

@@jeffduncan9140 the place I worked at would do them ,but only if you installed a new cooler (or anything else that the trans fluid runs thru). Can't prove you got a new cooler or replaced your rad with internal cooler and you want a rebuild ,well you're gonna buy a cooler/new rad from us or we won't rebuild it.

I've always liked the c4 in the ford dirt cars I ran back in the day. They didn't rob as much power as the c6 and worked just fine stock in the class I was running in.

I burned up the forward pack when I did not get the converter in far enough to turn the pump once. On a freshly "built" one, hard lesson learned.

Good information Andy just had a situation recently where my cousin went through this and I told him the same thing you just said about using the converter when your unsure of it and you probably saved someone alot of heart ache with this video thanks for your knowledge and sharing this

One thing to keep in mind with the fluid check is anyone can drain the bad fluid and refill it with fresh fluid so be Leary if they push how nice the fluid is and listen to your gut feeling about them

Buying a used racing transmission what could probably go wrong .. I learned a few lessons on used even a used Harley . Enjoy your videos. The only thing I can suggest is knowing where to go if it does not work out. Thanks for the videos

I dont think I bought any used Transmission for more than 100$. I flat out tell them unless the pan is off and I can inspect its not worth it. They usually sell it for under 75$ and wouldn't you know its never been apart. 🚒 Good stuff Andy thank you.

Had an AMC 727 made by Mopar. Bought a reputable reverse valve body and rebuild/bulletproofing kit and did it myself. Held up to 900 HP for years.

Using Used Torque Converters..... ug. That's like putting a Junkyard Fuel Pump in there, and worse. I have a couple transmission for sale, and they all have Torque Converters in them.... and I tell everyone, that they are only in there to plug the hole & keep dirt out of them. Like you said, just don't risk it. A clutch I can inspect and put it back in there if it's in good shape.... a TC, I can't, and pulling a transmission is one of my least favorite things to do.

Sometimes you get a good deal , build to fit power train . I built a C6 years back changed 1-2 planetary gears so I could leave faster with street gears R valve , Lincoln front drum for more clutches, deeper pan .. know the right people with the Best know how.

Since he got a good deal on it your friend did not get ripped off... It's hard when people don't know who did what to the object... When it comes to transmission if used & out of the car I assume it needs rebuilt... I got really lucky on a th 400 with a Pontiac bell housing. The others I knew or assumed they needed rebuilt... That can burn you as well

One mistake many rebuilders do is to use way to short screws on the servo-cover. This will make the C4 take a bleeding "suicide" as soon as the servo gets activated

Dynamic Race Transmissions always held up good in my Brothers Foxbody, Built Up Fully Rollerized, With Rev.Man. Valvebody, C-6. Buddy off mine ran a Migthy Mite C-4, in his Foxbody, was going Mid 8,s with No Issues Whatsoever. Dynamic was pretty much the innovators of Building up a C-4 that can take some serious abuse. I used to run a Proformance Pro C-4 in my Foxbody, No Issues with there's, Besides a Leaking Issue, which Actually Harold Sr. Fixed For me in Branford, at the Shop. It was always nice living pretty close to them all these years. I know they built really Good C-4,s and C-6,s Years Ago, and I'm sure they still do.

I realise that he is a special friend of yours, but without your assistance, we, the viewers, wouldn't be as privileged as we are with his videos. Looking forward to your D3 head project. If time permits, and it falls within the scope of your project, I would appreciate some comparison thoughts on both the 2v and 4v heads as made by Ford, relative to the D3's. I currently have 3 different Ford motors in early build. A 347 windsor with GT40P heads, and EEC V injection, a 393 Cleveland with Australian 2v closed chamber heads that will have a fabricated manifold and custom EEC V based injection, and a 408 Cleveland with 4v closed chamber iron heads with a single plane, and a Holley.

buying a "used" "built" trans is a high-risk gamble for sure, let me guess, it was rebuilt and mocked up, never ran, just decided to go in a different direction type of deal!

I build all my own stuff and assume that the one im buying is only a core until I know different. If they won't allow you to remove the pan they are not worth buying. Converters need to be replaced or gone through just about every rebuild unless you know no trash has made its way through it. When the seller realizes that you know your stuff they get weary of selling you the bs

You can send that total converter to TCI and other companies will go through it and it is cheaper than buying a brand new one

Hey Andy, sorry for the off topic comment but, I tried to ask them on the Live the other night but too busy I guess. Anyway, what I wanted to inquire about was… SBM valves open near the centerline of the bore, less valve shrouding with the smallish 3.91 bore. The spark plug is more centrally located in the chamber (for a wedge) than other makes. Tony mentioned the ‘one year only’ Rochester 2bbl with more CFM than the Carter, but not using it now?

Hello i have a 1971 ford f100 with 302 and fmx transmission the 302 has 4bbl carburetor and edelbrock intake stock headers from 87-93 mustang and 2 inch exhaust system my fmx won't shift into drive as soon as I start it has to run for about 5 minutes before it will go into drive but rev. Works great do you know what it could be thanks

Andrew, that is Called Morning Sickness in the Ford world. Basically the seals are hard aren't doing the job and once it has some heat in it the seals will swell and will apply the clutches in the trans. Hate to say it but it needs a rebuild Hope this helps Andy
