It's not really that. A fully functional wii *is* a fully functioning game cube with better specs. Similar hardware, enough to be compatible. It's the same deal with the DS and GBA; a DS is just a more powerful GBA with an extra CPU and a jank 3D mode.

Kinda. It's really more of how Japan has retro console enthusiasts. The store was doing "the people" a solid by putting it out there for a buck. These game stores regularly sell old consoles to enthusiasts and the best place to get repair parts is cannibalize a similar console. I've seen similar super cheap misbehaving consoles on shelves as parts repositories.

I got a Wii at launch, and a few days in, broke the sensor bar. A little research showed that the 'sensor' bar was just a series of infrared lights, and the actual sensor is in the Wiimote. So, we used candles. One on each side of the television. It worked MUCH better than the sensor bar ever did (as a candle gives off a LOT more infrared light than the bar). Also, it gave the Wii a kind of, ritualized, holy status. To play involved a ritual of lighting candles. Magic.

I love those dodgey repairs. There was almost no way to know that de-soldering would break the pads over twisting. Now we ALL know thanks to you. That’s how we progress and learn
@Caffeine_Addict_2020
@Caffeine_Addict_2020 2 жыл бұрын
Desoldering doesn’t break the pads - that only happens when you don’t heat up the pins enough to melt the solder and just try to yank the component off. That’s only because he’s inexperienced, not because this is an impossible operation. People who don’t have experience in surface mount soldering almost always rip parts off the board and it almost always results in trashing the entire board; I’ve seen it more times than I care to count
@SolidSonicTH
@SolidSonicTH 2 жыл бұрын
Something about breaking stuff to gain knowledge really doesn't sit well with me. Maybe it's just ugly reality but it's still a time of mourning if you cause it to happen regardless of your expertise.

@@Caffeine_Addict_2020ngl tho. I wonder why they make these boards so fragile to begin with. Rather than just gluing some copper the board, it should be *part* of the board for it to not be able to be ripped from it. And i wonder why the SMD caps aren't made to be easier to change. All this feels like design flaws
@Caffeine_Addict_2020
@Caffeine_Addict_2020 4 ай бұрын
@@SeleDreams probs cost, although I'm not super familiar with PCB manufacturing. I mean for the capability these things have they cost just about nothing, now. And it doesn't take a ton of effort/experience not to snap the pads off, so it's def not worth whatever the fix would cost

This is so true. I remember going to so many book-off locations in Japan to browse their used electronics section. I ended up buying some phones and consoles. I literally could not tell if the products were new or used. For one of the old system I purchased (FAMICOM) there was no discoloration, all components and the box were perfectly intact with documentation, and it played perfectly. The box still had the original coupon and flyer from when it was advertised for sale, i'm surprised it didn't have the sale receipt so I can return it for a full refund. I'm still confused to this day.

If I recall, specifically labeling something as "junk/ジャンク" in Japan typically means they're handwaving any guarantees. People around here tend to just pull them off so they don't end up breaking off going to tournaments for Smash all the time xD those things are super weak. All three of my Wiis have had them break off. So it's really funny to see them still attached on a supposedly junk console.

The way the video was made and edited really seemed to take the edge off and what also helped a lot was the voice of the host and the way the host spoke. Very pleasant to listen to and easy to pay attention to which is different from most videos that aim to seek attention. Thank you for making this video and I will be sure to check out your other videos. Before I forget...I now have 4 PS4 controllers that do not connect, nor do they charge. One of them requires to be plugged in to be able to use it while another one is completely dead and does not light up. I have another that comes on for about 3 seconds before dying and another one that is slowly losing charge because I cannot recharge it either. Either I am cursed eternally OR there is something interesting about PS4 controllers (resetting it does not work and I will soon buy usb port replacements as I think the batteries are fine).

It doesn't, because the solder won't stick to the PCB material (usually glass fiber with epoxy resin). What you COULD do is recreate a pad with part trace from thin copper plate, scratch the remaining trace, use cyanoacrylate or epoxy to glue it in place of the ripped pad, with a little solder, connect the trace parts and eventually solder a capacitor onto that. And hope the glue you used to glue the pad with, holds well enough. I've seen it work, I was able to do it once with more light-weight SMD parts, but a capacitor is quite a heavy SMD part... your milage may vary.

Ok so tips for you: 1. Buy Amtech NC-559 Flux - before any solder heating use this stuff. 2. Before desolder always add some new solder to lower melting temperature. 3. For SMD use hot Air station - even cheap one will do with some practice. 4. Change your solder tip to chisel head. 5. Always heat PCB pads, not pins.

3:41 the guy named bigbumbob is actually me, on God. Can't believe my Mario Kart Wii player is shown in a KZbin video with 1.5 million views and I didn't even know it! I wish I knew who you were in that room. p.s. I know it is a stupid name I made that Mii when I was young and just decided to use it for fun.
