I've got a 1980 CX-500 sitting in my garage. I'm the original owner but will never sell her. She's totally intact and shines like a new penny. The only mod I made was the addition of a windjammer fairing that makes it a dream to ride on the highway. Shaft drive, water cooled and she runs as smooth as a sewing machine. This bike is essentially a scaled down Goldwing.

Hi Jason, retired factory Honda mechanic here! Regarding engine performance, keep in mind that Honda notoriously kept their air intake systems VERY restrictive. If you don't use factory air box, you're going to want to raise the needles a notch or two and use a bit larger main jets. If don't use the factory air box, it'll run but will be really lean with all of the problems that go along with not enough fuel.

CX500, my first big bike, electric blue (fastest colour obviously). Paid £600 for it in 1983, it was in a mess but fully restored it, even fully re-laquered, it looked and rode amazingly. Gutted when I sold it for for a pig in a poke GPZ650, biggest mistake ever. I often see couriers still running the CX, all beat up, filthy but running strong. Biggest weakness was the cam chain tensioner, other than that solid. Might just start looking for another now.

My first bike I bought in 2015, 2008 buell blast, under 850 miles for $850. As is HD dealer class sale off. Sold with two gears accessible, some basic maintenance and adjustments work got it to four. Rode it that way for a season, after ripped off from another HD dealer, I tore the whole thing apart. To fix the shift drum and forks.

I bought a new one in 1981, a CX 500D and it was a very reliable good running bike. Little low on hp and really needs a fifth gear for highway much over 60+ mph. High revving and quiet with no chain noise. Sold it two years ago to a young lady from Michigan. Popular to make Cafe Races out of these.

Hey, Jason !! I used to ride a CX500C (for Custom), years ago. It was full stock and gave me thousands of kilometers of fun. Still, I replaced the stock handle bar, because it was too much a wheebarrow driving position, with the handles not enough apart. I chose a Goldwing GL1100 handlebar, with a much more "bullhorn-like" look and a very pleasant driving position. It didnot require any work on the harness, fitted like a charm. Have fun !✌

In the UK the CX500 was THE indestructible dispatch rider's bike. Millions of parcels, documents, and blood and transplant organs were all delivered on these things by thousands of British dispatch riders, cutting through all weather. I was one of them.... They are affectionately known here as the "Plastic Maggot". Throw all that CX500C silly low rider styling away and fit the CX500B tank and bars to it so it will go actually around corners.

Had a 650 Silver Wing. Great bikes, and that twin is a work horse and was easy to do my own maintenance. I loved the shaft drive, it made a smooth ride. I had a CX500 Deluxe with a Windjammer Vindacator faring on it. Rode it 65 miles one way to college for a couple of years. There were a handful of models of the CX500: Deluxe; Custom (cruiser style); Sliverwing (pseudo touring). Honda Racing even had a flat tracker, turning the motor 90 degrees. Later models were upgraded to 650 cc which suited the bike much better.

Hey guys, I am a former Goldwing owner and was a member of the International Group Goldwing Road Riders Association (GWRRA). To my knowledge the Goldwing never had a kick start either. It was explained to me that the engineers weren't able to adapt a kick start to an engine that had a crankshaft that wasn't transverse. The Goldwing was initially introduced in, if memory serves me correctly, 1976.

@matshemmingsson2276 Wow! I guess you actually DO learn something new every day! When I was a teenager, my best friend's parents had a '76 or '77, and even though I memorized just about all of the ins and outs of that bike, that's one thing I missed! I was about as giddy as a school girl when I got the opportunity to pick up an '83 when I was 34 years old (I'm 63 now)! That was the first year that the 'Wing had an overdrive trans and the last year for the 1100. I had a buddy that had an '82 that was nearly identically equipped as my '83. Because of the overdrive I was able to get about 40 - 50 miles more from a tank of gas than he got with his. (#Note: that was on gentle acceleration and cruising on highway road trips.) I sure do miss that bike! I actually shed a tear or 20 when I handed the title to the lucky feller that talked me out of it.

Jason, my vote is to restore the front end to stock. Somebody in your extensive friend network probably has some handlebars... That would also solve the front bearing issue and eliminate the twitchy handling. Do a "Derek" tune-up, run some Berryman through those carbs. That CX will be a fun bike to tool around the airport!

I can hear the lack of an air filter. It will run better with the filter installed. The carbs aren't that hard to overhaul. Done many like them. You're lucky it's an '81. Post cam chain tensioner recall.

Hi Jason, greetings from Argentina. Your channel is called "Rebuild Rescue", so IDK why other viewers are disapointed when you don´t "rescue" airplanes; after all you didn´t start this channel by doing them. Obviously when Sam (RIP) gave you the 401 and you started working at her, your subscribers raised a lot. Whoever putting your hands on planes without being a certified A&P is a risky challenge. You always depend on third qualified persons to inspect your work as well as materials and procedures; no wonder having and mantainning an airplane (even small ones) is so expensive. On the other hand, watching your videos with a open mind will give me (us?) some new knowledge; I can always learn something new, so thanks for that. Besides, it´s a nice way to enjoy your Saturday morning cup of coffee (or tea if you are at the other side of the pond). Keep it coming, Jason, no matter what... you can never satisfy everyone. See you next week. Cheers from NE Patagonia, Argentina.
