Get the cage inspected / certified for the ET range you are shooting for before you go any further. If all of the tubing is out of spec, you want to know before you spend a ton of money finishing it.

@hammerheadz3126 I'm coming from my own perspective here, but I think a lot of car guys have a similar problem in their noggin. I have scope creep, and what started out as a project for A becomes A,B, and Z. Having learned that about myself, it's best to play it safe and make sure the chassis can be used in a few different classes of racing :) So while he didn't mention it, he could easily find himself down the road wanting to but being unable to.

@@reclez100 the problem with a 2J and no prep is how hard you have to hit it from a dig for it to not bog. Not a lot of no-prep surfaces will take a 6500rpm launch. Turbo LS 1300hp isn't too difficult. 1500hp is where you start to spend a lot of time rebuilding them and fixing torched heads though. Maybe a built coyote...

I'm praying for a rotary myself, it's an rx7 it needs a rotor ,a well setup 20b would be lethal in that. Hell we've got 13b ones running low 7s here in Aus, a few even in the 6s 👌

Hey Taylor, what an amazing starting point! I've been wanting to build this exact build, so I'm excited to see it. My vote for an engine would be to keep it a small block incase the rules won't allowed boosted big blocks. I specifically love to see a turbo Coyote, however I know they are expensive. Next pick would probably be a big bore and Factory size stroke LS or LT engine. The common consensus from what I can tell is high rpm, high hp and less low end Torque.

What are your future plans with the Monte? I think a "Pro Touring" style of build would suit it well. Modern control arms and suspension components, brakes, wheels, tires and a reliable 400-450hp LS with ac and all of the creature comforts.

20bs easily hit 1500, at that power in such a light car it'll be capable of low 7s . We have 13b ones here in Aus doing low 7s too but usually only pushing around 1000whp as they don't need much more being they're so light. 4 rotor would be wicked though 🤔👌

As for engine/powertrain setup.. well, if you want light, easy to swap in, a ton of support, and the capability of making 1500 wheel then you can never go wrong with the tried and true twin turbo LS platform setup. But something in the way you’ve talked about having an idea for what you wanna go with seems like it implies you aren’t doing another LS this go around.. super stoked to see what ends up going in!

Being that you're building it for no-prep, my suggestion would actually be a 3 rotor with a big turbo and a nitrous system to initially spool the turbo on the line with a Turbo 400 or powerglide transmission. Keeps your package very light and they are known to be extremely fast, just look at Import vs Domestic and those are 2 rotor cars generally. If not a 3 rotor, then some kind of aluminum V8 with turbos would be the obvious choice for reliable power that will do what you want. Side-note, my dad and I are currently building a drag car as well (68 camaro with a 572 or 632 big block chevy) and I almost have him convinced to do electronic control with boost for a similar type of racing. Love the videos, and can't wait to see where you go with this beast!!

The whole RX7 line up is gorgeous to me but the first gens look particularly tough imo. Its a stunning shape for a simple street build but it really excels on a drag build. Something about the lines really suits a tubbed rear end & pizza cutter fronts.

Oh my. You just keep leveling up. This is so awesome. For 1500whp goals, that really narrows down the selection in my eyes. And im not even considering packaging issues if you want to leave the hood level as is. LSX, Coyote, 2JZ, 3/4 Rotor, Barra. A Billet K series would be WILD in this car for lightness but I think all that money could be better spent on a twin turbo LS or coyote or even a 2JZ. Really excited for this build and what you do with it in the coming year or 2.

If I was building a similar car, I’d head straight to TSR for a new rear end/4 link setup and some long travels for the front. Let them know your goals and what you’re looking for. Not sure what your definition of “no prep” is. NPK is definitely not “no prep.” That’s a TV show. How many of those guys have seen win major NP events (Dig or Die, Small Tire Gangstas, Pad Warz, etc.) on a small tire. Front or back of track? They tried…but TV…just feels there’s better resources out there for you to explore. Good luck, man! Looking forward to how the build comes together!
