We moved from California to Nevada, no inspection to register. Only smog checks in Washoe and Clark counties, nowhere else. I bought a classic car in California , and Nevada checked the vin number. That's all. no inspection. We then moved to Wyoming. No inspections ever! My collector cars, they checked the Vin number in order to get discounted collector plates. No inspections on anything else, and they don't check the mileage for my collector plates.

Thank you I was told at the Toyota dealership here in fla that Toyota is forcing the dealers to up the msrp price $5000 but I found a dealership in GA that was not marking up the price on a 4 runner TRD pro. Not sure what the truth is but if it’s not to much trouble to buy in GA and bring it home to FL that may be a good choice. What is your ideal. Thank you

Great video and still very relevant after 4 years. Is there a reciprocal arrangement between Ohio and Michigan on sales tax ? And how doesn’t it work if Michiganders wanted to buy from an Ohio dealer or private seller ? Can the buyer from MI opt for paying taxes while registering ?

Did you work at Bedford or N. Olmsted? I bought a 2008 C 300 at Bedford and got a pretty good deal. Oil was $140/bbl and car sales were slow. There was $2000 factory to dealer cash available and was subtracted off the "invoice figure". I remember the salesman telling me that $250 doc fee was the law. I had to instruct him that the law stated he could not charge more than $250 and that was unreasonable for a little paperwork. Paid cash so no financing. Good dealership that threw a party every summer back then but I went to Bernie's for a couple recalls. Great customer lounge there.

Buying a car out if state while living in California has one big issue. California emissions control is insane and california model cars have extra emissions control systems. It can get pricey converting a 49 state vehicle to meet the california requirements. Unless the out of state vehicle is already a california model. It can happen. Im in maryland and bought two motorcycles from a local dealer at an extreme discount due to them being california models. They were not califonia models once i got them home and yanked all the california stuff off

You may have mentioned it without me hearing you say it but don't forget that CA will not allow registration of an out of state vehicle with less than 7500 miles on it unless it says somewhere on the manufacturer card on the vehicle that it meets CA emissions standards or it's a hybrid. I also have a question. If I want to buy a car out of state and register it when I get back home to CA but I don't want to ship it, what is the deal with driving through various states on my way home with a paper tag from the dealer?
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for pointing that out. I did not know that California had that type of registration restriction on mileage. Very interesting. Temp tag registration reciprocity varies from state to state. So the legality will depend on what state you're buying in. There's a decent chance that in theory your out of state temp tags are not legal in one state but legal in another as you drive across the country. I personally have driven my own car with temp tags from Ohio to New Hampshire and back without trouble. But I think cops are within their rights to pull you over if they so choose. In all the out of state sales that I've been aware of working at Mercedes this was not an issue that came up. I think it might one of those rules that just gets a pass unless they need a reason to stop you. In the event that you do get pulled over I would just have your bill of sale and insurance with you at all times just so they don't have a reason to suspect the car is stolen.

Your material is very informative. I live in Nevada and want to purchase a new car in Utah with a trade in therefore paying difference in sales tax. Would the Utah dealer charge the Nevada sales tax? Would I pay tile and registration upon returning to Nevada? What do you think about 2021 Hyundai Elantra N Line? How much discount can be negotiated? I am paying a combination credit card and personal check. Would that be considered all cash? Do you need inspection for a new car?

Thank you. If you like these videos I’ve started a new channel this year that focuses solely on car advice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6jSlKGsoMp8ps0 You pay all taxes and registration relative to where you park the vehicle. So if you live in Nevada but buy in Utah you pay Nevada taxes and registration. If the dealer does not without the sales tax because it’s out of state then you will have to pay the sales tax when you register the vehicle with permanent plates. I don’t have any tangible experience with the N Line but that is one of the more commonly referenced cars I see in the comment section of these videos. The average discount off MSRP right now is ~5% but I think at least 9% is achievable. I’d start your offer at 12% off MSRP and then email multiple dealers around the region (I have a video that explains exactly what to say by email). I’d consider you a cash buyer for the most part. Be aware they may charge a merchant fee for processing credit card payments above $500. It may be as much as 3%. You should not require an inspection for new cars.

I live in California. Last month I bought a used truck from Texas, it was a great deal compared to 3k-4k higher price on average the same truck in California. Got bunch of friends in Texas to check the truck for me and transaction was smooth. And I flew there and did a road trip back. Everything I expected to be hard went so well. However, I didn't expect registering the truck would be the most difficult part. It's been a month and half, I still didn't get the title to register. My finance bank said they never got the title, dealer said they sent everything a month ago, and CA DMV told me if I want to replace the lost title, I need to go to Texas DMV😂. Still trying to work things out before this temporary license plate expire..... My advise, try not to finance out of state vehicle, this might mess things up! I financed minimum amount allowed by bank just to diversify my credit portfolio, should have paid cash😩

I feel your pain man. About 4 years ago I financed a car in Ohio from New Hampshire. Wound up driving from Ohio to New Hampshire once to get the memorandum title. Then a second time to provide proof of address for the state of Ohio to release their hold on the title for sales tax. I ended up just paying the Ohio sales tax and registering the car in Ohio (a longer story) because it was easier than registering the car in New Hampshire.

@@notwaitingtolive Thanks for replying and all the awesome videos! I watched almost all your videos about negotiation. Using email and your tips. It feels just easy to finally get about 3k off the original price listed, denied all bs fees, no extra protection plan purchased. I actually wished I could just register it in Texas, much lower tax rate and trade in tax reduction can save me around another 2k. California tax rate is crazy and has no trade in tax reduction. I sold my old car to Cavana, they offered 2k more than Carmax and that's in mid range to sell to private party. Couldn't be happier.

Maxwell DeLorm Yes you’re able to register a car in Florida. All you need to do is prove that you currently live in Florida. You don’t even necessarily need to be a resident. A copy of your lease or a utility bill at a Florida address will suffice for proof for Florida sales tax. The Florida sales tax for cars is cheaper than NYC but not necessarily every part of New York so make sure you confirm you’re saving.

Great information! Your videos have been very helping during my car buying process. I do have a question, do you have information about the tax laws and registration if I live in Alabama and looking to purchasing a car in Georgia?
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Happy to help. Alabama has no emissions standards, while Georgia has some in around a dozen counties, so you shouldn't have any problems with emissions. Georgia requires annual inspections so you should also be fine from a safety standpoint as well if Alabama requires an inspection when you transfer registration. The uncertainty I see is Georgia Ad Valorem Tax for 7% of the vehicles assessed value. This does not appear to be relevant to you so long as you're not titling the car in Georgia. Georgia does not appear to withhold sales tax so I would expect you will have to pay both state, county, and city sales taxes based on where you're registering the vehicle. I would definitely take the time to call the Alabama Department of Revenue Division of Motor vehicles to make sure you get the amounts right because I haven't given you a good answer: revenue.alabama.gov/motor-vehicle/

How about purchasing from Canada?
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
I have no relevant experience importing/exporting vehicles to/from the U.S. Import/export laws are nuanced, I know that at least. There are a ton of ways to get burned because cars manufactured in Canada, even newer ones, do not necessarily meet the safety standards in the U.S. and vice versa. IF the vehicle can be legally imported/exported to/from the U.S. (there are a bunch that cannot be), then you'll still pay additional import taxes on cars not manufactured in the U.S. or Canada. What car in particular are you looking for? Are you trying to import or export?

Let's say I find a 2017 vehicle I like in NY with only 5k. miles & I want it shipped to my home CA. How does that work with me getting my license plates in CA? DMV offices are closed, therefore does the car need an inspection with only 5k miles? Does it need a smog? How do I register an out of state car in CA. with the DMV closed? The dealer in NY said they'd give me 45 day temp tag ( a piece of paper) however I'd be driving around CA w/o license plates. I'd get pulled over by cops. It's a very frustrating ordeal, however this is a performance car that's limited production, so I can't find one locally. I would buy it from a Chevy dealer sight unseen. Risky, I know. Any advice?
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have any good advice for you on how to register the car in California with the DMV closed. I have to imagine that we are less than 45 days away from solving that problem since thousands of Californians will have the same issue. Even if you get to the point where the tags expire I'd like to think you're going to get the benefit of the doubt if the DMV is still closed and you have your bill of sale and insurance on you. Buying sight unseen doesn't bother me if you can get a good video walk around of the car and see pictures of all the details. There's a lot that can still go wrong once the car's running (and potentially leaking or rattling) so the risk you run is losing the time and money spent on travel if it turns out you need to walk away from the deal. I definitely wouldn't pay or sign anything until you physically see the car. But if this is what you want and you can't get it where you live I can't think of any other reasons to not go for it. I do want to add I see this note from another commentor that's relevant to your out of state purchase with just 5,000 miles: "You may have mentioned it without me hearing you say it but don't forget that CA will not allow registration of an out of state vehicle with less than 6500 miles on it unless it says somewhere on the manufacturer card on the vehicle that it meets CA emissions standards or it's a hybrid."

I'm in the process of purchasing a used vehicle to drive back to CLE. 1) should I be concerned about registering an out of state salvage title in Cuyahoga County?) the vehicle is in perfect shape.) Also since i'm purchasing & registering my car in CA 1st...will there be any unexpected taxes in Oh when I register.

Nice man. Welcome back. 1. An out of state salvage title definitely has potential issues you could run in to. You're going to need a couple separate inspections. First the state highway patrol is going to inspect the car to make sure you don't have any stolen parts, so you'll need receipts for all the "major component part" repairs performed (they do not acknowledge your out of state salvage title) and you need to make sure none of the part numbers have been removed. If they determine the necessary repairs have not been made you may be force to have the vehicle towed from the inspection facility to a mechanic shop. The salvage guidance is linked below: www.semasan.com/semaga/TagTitleToolbox_OH.pdf In the guidance you'll see that they don't accept out of state salvage titles, but I believe this just means you have to start from scratch with the inspection process as opposed to them just accepting the California salvage title. Then you'll have to pass an E-check which probably won't be a problem if it's passed in California. I'd definitely call the Ohio BMV in advance to discuss the details of your specific situation to make sure you have enough evidence to get a salvage title in Ohio. Another concern you might have is insurance coverage for the car itself. They'll insure your liability but not necessarily damage done to the car. You would probably want to confirm or find an insurance company in advance that will insured your salvage title vehicle. 2. Ohio is most likely going to credit the sales tax as paid in full if you've already paid for the purchase of that vehicle assuming it's >= 8% (so you probably won't be double taxed). But this is another question to ask the BMV to make sure when you ask them about the salvage title.

@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
Buying out of state is a balance of risk and reward. The risk is that you lose the time and money associated with either travelling out of state or having the car delivered. You still have the right of refusal if you were to have the car delivered and determined you were mislead, but the dealer would likely expect you to pay for the delivery and return. If you're coming from out of state you simply walk away if things weren't as promised. The dealer could certainly cheat and lie to you, but in this age of internet reviews a simple smoke test should give you an idea of the reputation of dealer. Read the customer reviews. Where there's smoke there's fire. And the smallest dealers with the oldest cars have the highest chance of something being misrepresented. The reward is that you get want you want at a lower price, in better condition, or just find what you can't near you. The sales tax will usually be the same (for most intents are purposes). The sales tax charge is based on where the vehicle is registered.

Many dealers will be willing to work out an early lease trade in deal within 90 days of your lease end if you lease or buy your next car through them. Some manufacturers will schedule an at home lease turn in inspection a month or two before the lease ends to make sure there are no major issues. This is a scheduled appointment. Even when they don’t do that, the turn in process is usually as simple as handing over the keys the day the lease is due. If there is noticeable damage you will be charged for the repairs at the standard rates of repair at the dealership. Alternatively you can have the repairs made independently if you think the dealers price will be unreasonable. In general my experience is that the dealer permits normal wear and tear. The car doesn’t have to be pristine to be turned in hassle free.

I offered them a firm price. They asked if my offer price was my offer out the door TTL. Do you know how this works? Should i be adding TTL to the used dealer or will i just pay the price i offered and ask for temporary plates and TTL in florida where i reside? Are used dealerships even allowed to TTL to out of state buyers? Or is this them just trying to scam me for extra money for the offer i sent them?
@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
If Texas has reciprocity with Florida, Texas can withhold the sales tax due and forward it to the Florida DMV/BMV. Other times they won't withhold any tax and it's up to you to pay what's owed in Florida when you register your vehicle for your plates. I do not recommend making out the door price offers because it complicates negotiations. With every out the door price offer the car dealer and buyer has to back calculate fees and taxes just to find out what they're actually selling the car for. This adds unnecessary stress and uncertainty to the negotiation. I would just focus on the sale price of the car, then make sure everything else you're paying is itemized and appropriate separately. They could just be clarifying your offer to make sure that they're not thousands of dollars apart on negotiations (in an out the door price scenario). Otherwise if a dealer wants to talk in terms of out the door price that's a red flag to me.

Can you do a video about moving to a new state and buying a car (before or after the move)? I do not have a car, but will need a car in the new state. Buying a car before I move would mean I could use it to help with the move, which would be a huge help. But I would need to re-register it in the new state, and turn in the 'old' plates, do a change of address on the insurance, etc. Would I pay taxes twice? Would it make more sense to move first, then buy a car? Yes? ...but maybe I am missing something.

@@notwaitingtolive Well, having the car before I move would be helpful in the move itself (from NYC to Louisville, KY). If I bought a car in NY, registered it, insured it...then moved in 3-5 months. Using the car to drive back and forth, moving some stuff...sounds good. But would this be a mistake? After the move, I would need to pay for registering it again, inspecting it again, changing the insurance policy, etc. Would I need to pay tax on it twice or could I present a tax payment for NY to KY DMV? Or would that be just too much trouble? Moving to a new state, finding a place to live, and buying a car seems like more work. Buying the car prior to the move seems like taking care of one thing before hand (the car), so to speak - see what I mean?

@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
From what I can see from a surface level glance here it looks as though you might pay ~8% sales tax in New York (8.88% in NYC) and 6% in Kentucky (but you will not likely pay twice). Kentucky appears to allow credit for out of state taxes paid on the vehicle (with proof). I don’t see New York listed as a reciprocity state with Kentucky but that doesn’t mean you have to pay twice. I’d just check with Kentucky’s DMV to make sure they’d give you a full credit for the sales tax you’d pay in New York. So as far as this surface level glance goes it appears the financial premium for buying in new york before your move might be ~2-2.88% + the cost of New York registration.

@notwaitingtolive
@notwaitingtolive 4 жыл бұрын
When buying a vehicle that is titled outside of Ohio a notary will be required to validate the seller assigning the actual title to buyer. The buyer needs this to prove to the Ohio DMV that they have the authority to re-title this out of state vehicle. You'll need to perform an out of state inspection before you can title the motorcycle in Ohio. You also want to make sure you're receiving the real title and not the memorandum title. A private seller will not have the actual title until they've paid off 100% of the amount owed to the lender (if applicable). A way to avoid this potential issue is to go with the seller in Michigan to DMV to validate that the seller has the authority to sell this vehicle.

You'll need a bill of sale before you can get temporary plates from the DMV. They'll need to see proof the title should be transferred to your name. It's for the best that the seller go with you to be sure there are no liens on the title preventing a legal sale from taking place.

You need to register the car in the state where the vehicle is parked the majority of the time. In the case of summer homes though you’ll see people registering the car in whichever state has the more favorable tax code. Regardless you’ll always need proof of an address like utilities or a lease agreement to register a car in a different state. And you may also run into issues with your drivers license if you do so as some states may require you to have a drivers license there to have a car registered there even if you live permanently another state.

You cannot drive a car without plates from another state because the first owner is gonna take his plates. How you gonna drive a car without plates when you are gonna bring the car to your state????????

If you’re buying from a dealer they will most likely give you temporary tags in most states. These may or may not be technically legal depending on the states you’re passing through to get home but this is the practical application. If you’re buying from a private party, contact your bureau or department of motors vehicles to see what your options are. Among them might be registering the car before you go to pick it up with a legal, notorized bill of sale. This would mean you’d have to buy the car before picking it up, which may or may not be convenient or feasible in your situation. You have several options that aren’t legal by the book but people get away with it most of the time in a pinch to get home. One is to have the seller not take their plates.. believe it or not some people are willing to allow the buyer to keep the plates on until they get home and trust that they will be returned. This is common. Another illegal way is to bring other plates you have on another vehicle and keep them on the car until you get home. Make sure you have that notorized bill of sale with you on your way home if you try something like that.

I cannot get a temporary permit from the state that I'm buying the vehicle since I don't live there. And I cannot go back to my state to register there (without the car) because that would be a waste of fuel money and time

@@stilliraise9201 A car hauler will work. Delivery is more expensive these days due to restricted supply chains during the pandemic but you can coordinate a shipping company to bring a car to your home. Usually around $500-$1,500+ depending on your location. Usually it’s ~$1/mile in that 500-1,500 mile range. Cross country shipping can be cheaper per mile but like still at least $1,500. I’ve used shipping companies to bring cars to Ohio from New Jersey and Colorado. The trouble would be coordinating the paperwork. Depending on what you’re trying to buy, the savings or equipment at stake, and your level of trust with the seller/remote inspection, it may not be worth your time. But you could drive or fly out of state, check out the car, sign the paperwork, and have it delivered home. In Ohio where I’m from this extra expense may be warranted when buying on older cars that get destroyed by the salt and the winters up here. Cars out in Nevada seem timeless compared to the beating they get in the rust belt.

@@stilliraise9201 good to know. Valuable info. An in transit permit is only $50 in Ohio. Not sure about elsewhere.

whats it like getting a car from Tennessee/Kentucky and bringing it up to new york

Depending on where you register the car in New York it could be 4-8.75% for sales tax (with 8.75% being in the NYC area). Plus you’ll pay for NY state registration which should be ~$200.
