I live in Ontario Canada where the weather can get into the minus temps. Is the Daikin heat pump (80k) good enough to heat in the more rigid of temps alone or should i go with a gas furnace and Daikin air handler?
@TheHVACDopeShow

You’re going to want backup heat in Canada. Either a dual fuel with a furnace backup, or air handler with electric heat kit but 80% furnace backup heat is probably solid… your heat pump will typically be running when it’s 0F and warmer, (-18C and warmer)

I just replaced an old 13 SEER single stage unit with furnace with a 17SEER Daikin Fit Heat pump. I ran into two problems. 1) Surprisingly, there was absolutely no energy savings on my summer power bill. 2) It produces a loud buzzing noise in the wall in the winter. No real good reasons given for why the Daikin Fit wasn't more energy efficient. The manufacturer says the Daikin line sets run at higher pressures in general and especially in the winter. And this likely causes this buzzing in the walls. They suggest running the line set up the wall externally to remove the buzzing noise. Are you familiar with this issue? And will running the line set up the wall definitely remove the buzzing line set issue? In your video it seems like the line set was also ran externally up the wall. Any feed back would be helpful. THANKS!!
@jacobstillson3498
@jacobstillson3498 Жыл бұрын
I don’t know what is going on with the buzzing noise, but it sounds like there could be possibly a problem with installation. As far as energy efficiency, you may need a technician to come and dial certain settings in and field settings. To get better, energy, efficiency, and savings out of it depending on where you live you should also contact your utilities provider because they may actually provide certain rebates. In Colorado Springs. I have witnessed people getting $1200 rebate from the Colorado Springs Utilities for a VRV and high-efficiency furnace combo.

Alot of it can be the type of install. if your unit is in an unconditioned space and running low and slow then it's not getting the air to the space like something at speed would be. Your losing it before you can use it.
@TheHVACDopeShow
@TheHVACDopeShow Жыл бұрын
Agree with the comments below. Maybe look at duct sealing if it wasn't done, but the buzzing could be mitigated with a linset ran externally probably... I would have thought it was there before though so if this is new that's odd, this can be from compressor vibrations if the linset inside the wall is braced to tightly to a stud or something in an area you spend time in then it might transfer somehow. Hope it get's resolved if you're still having issues let us know. Insulation and duct sealing can go a long way if those weren't done. The energy consumption should definitely be less unless you changed your usage like setting the thermostat lower or higher for example with the new system but even then, the fit is normally pretty efficient

I live in SLC UT and I'm looking at the numbers and it rarely gets below 10F... So I'm thinking if I get the SkyAir I don't really need a gas backup. I assume if you don't have the dual fuel setup that should save you on the total install purchase price. I have solar and have a ton of banked surplus power so if I have those extremely rare days it goes below -4F I assume I can run my 3 space heaters in the house to hold me over until the next day it goes back above 0F. But I can't remember the last time it was below 5F.
@TheHVACDopeShow
@TheHVACDopeShow 7 ай бұрын
You’re probably fine but either way you’ll have backup heat with an electric heat kit if you’re going with an air handler. I would get a quote for both, and also consider checking with a local contractor because Daikin has a 120V air handler coming out soon (all are 208/240V currently) and with that it’s easy to delete a furnace without needing a 240V electrical circuit if you don’t want / need backup heat. Dual fuel (having a furnace too) will maybe add a little to the price but because you still have an air handler I don’t know how much the difference would be. Air handler is normally less vs. a furnace / evap coil combo.

Could you explain Inverter units. Do these convert AC to DC and all of the components within the condenser are DC? If that’s the case, could I bypass the inverter and power directly with DC from my solar system?
@TheHVACDopeShow
@TheHVACDopeShow Жыл бұрын
Correct, but no you can’t bypass it because (simple version) all of the electronics on the board are not necessarily DC, and I think there’s variability with the power from your solar which is why it’s designed for AC, because most systems are grid tie. Honestly eventually the technology might shift to DC and I know some companies are bypassing the grid tie / inverter process because you lose power converting from DC to AC and going DC to DC appliance is a lossless transfer of power (like for charging vehicles or running a DC air conditioner). I will see what I can do to make a video on the topic or have a special guest on / engineer to explain it

@TheHVACDopeShow

That's odd there's a fan setting in the thermostat control so you should be able to turn the fan to off mode if you want and adjust the fan speed up and down. Normally we run the fan on low for air circulation. The Daikin one touch is now out and eliminated the wheel. I don't know if your dealer will swap it out for you but it is a newer thermostat. I have the one+ as well in our home and haven't had any issues with it. I believe you can change dehumidify settings in the thermostat, it's an overcool setting / dehumidify setting in the installer settings during commissioning.

No that should do it, that air handler is probably just putting out more airflow than needed we do the same / similar things often on systems to match customer comfort. I hate Heat pumps. I live in the Midwest and I am on my second Trane heat pump since 2007. The first one was a seer, 14 electric heat strip air handler and right after 10 years the compressor went out so I bought another trane seer 18 XI Tam 7 electric air handler, and I have had nothing but trouble with it for the last six years. I am so angry and frustrated, and I spoke with a new good guy in our area who owns his own small HVAC company and does all the work himself with one helper. He said Trane is too expensive and they’re not worth it. He installs Dakin and Amana and he said those are the better units, and I am inclined to believe him. His prices are very reasonable too instead of so expensive like these companies. $75 per hour and he said he’ll beat anybody’s price in the area because he has a low overhead and that’s what I like. These bigger companies think they got to charge you so much. I hate big corporations and I don’t like big companies either because they always want a lot of money. I am old fashion like my parents were, and that’s the best way to be whenever it comes to money and quality. Stick with a small business owner who doesn’t have a ton of employees because he will almost always treat you better if he knows how to do good work. And I have seen bigger companies who have some of the shittiest workers who come and go every two years.

It depends they’re both solid and both have 12 year warranties. Idk we sell both but we’re primarily a daikin dealer… if a Mitsubishi diamond dealer installs their equipment often times they have a 12 year warranty as well. I’ve never installed the LV but we’ve installed their slim duct units on VRV life systems and haven’t had issues. I had a headache with their DZK system once but that’s technically not even a daikin product. Long story either will be fine especially on the 1 to 1 (1 indoor and 1 outdoor unit).

I am on my second year with my Daiken Fit and I LOVE it. My bill is much lower and the equipment is totally silent. The reason you hear so much about Mitsubushi is because Mitsubshi is sold one off to any old hack contractor but Daiken is only sold to Daiken trained professionals. Half of the problems you will ever have will be the result of a bad installation by a hack installer. Daiken installers typically don't do a bad job because they care enough about what they are doing to get properly trained.

I replaced my system in my house around 2 months ago. I’ve had two new systems in the past 6-7 years. One was a comfortmaker and the other was rudd. The comfortmaker compressor failed within 4 years. Some people may like rudd because of the price but I was never happy with it. It struggled to keep my house cool and it went bad quicker than the comfortmaker. I will say the guy I was using wasn’t worth a damn and that could of been the problem. I went with a new company and they carry carrier and daikin. I was originally going to go with carrier but the company informed me that Daikin had a better warranty and it would save me a few dollars. They recommended a 3 ton unit but I was borderline between the 3 and the 3.5 ton in my area. I decided to go with the 3.5 ton because I like my house at 69 degrees. It was right at $14,000 for the system, but I did add a humidifier for the winter which was like a $850-$900 option. I can already tell a difference in my house and my bill has been quite a bit cheaper. So far it was a great investment and was worth the money.

Technically yes, with a daikin fit gateway adapter but I would strongly advise against it because your furnace is 20 years old. I would only do that if your furnace was newer and you wanted a daikin fit…you’d be better off with a Daikin paired system. If you’re going for a Daikin fit heat pump, I would switch to an 80% furnace if it’s allowed in your area like the DM80VC because it’s a dual fuel set up that way, but one of the nuances currently is you can only do a dual fuel set up on Daikin fit 3 ton or smaller, heat pumps. Otherwise if you don’t want a heat pump and you’re wanting to stick with a high-efficiency I would do the DM 96VC or DM 97mc high-efficiency furnaces in pair that with a daikin fit AC (cool only condenser).

@TheHVACDopeShow
@TheHVACDopeShow Жыл бұрын
I had to look up Gree because I wasn't Familiar! I don't have an opinion on Gree other than what I read on their spec sheets but it sounds like it has a lower capacity and is meant to maintain capacity even in super cold temps as it says it can run down to -36F. I know the Daikin Fit Heat Pump is rated down to -10F but it will not operate at full capacity (is my understanding) and starts to lose capacity once temps get into the single digit lows. That's why for most markets the Daikin Fit is an amazing value proposition, but if you're in really cold temps a Daikin VRV Life or a Gree system might handle lower temps better. Part of what we consider too is that natural gas costs are typically cheaper than electricity in most markets, so that's why it's efficient to run a furnace as backup heat when it get's REALLY cold (which in Denver is anything under 10F) and so all the systems we design out here that are "Duel Fuel" (Furnace paired with a Heat Pump) are designed to have the furnace run when it gets really cold which is probably only a few nights or so a year.

@@coopaudiovisuellegts7428 Cheaper isn't always better, Gree is a no name I haven't heard of so I don't know how much I'd trust their warranty or tech. If you only need to run the furnace a few nights a year (I live in Denver for 30 years, so below 10 degrees maybe 20 nights and maybe two days in a winter). You are asking the consumer to spend $5000+ for the furnace. Doesn't the heat pump have a resistive heating option? I know those cost a lot to operate, but if it's only for those short periods, then it would take a LOT of years to make up the difference of adding a furnace wouldn't it? I’ve seen some bad publicity on the Daikin Smart thermostat. What is your experience with your customers?
@TheHVACDopeShow
@TheHVACDopeShow Жыл бұрын
For the most part they work without issue and is a lot better than it was when it first came out. The technology is actually based on the CTK04 (Honeywell communicating thermostat) so it's not new, just a different interface... the only gripe I have is when it doesn't work it can be annoying because it's communicating so it's more work for us lol, but that's on the installer not the customer. I would say you'd never know the difference honestly, it's similar to a nest or eco bee. The big thing is making sure you're wiring is correct and you have good wire connections, because that can affect communication. All in all I don't think we have any more issues with them than we do with a normal thermostat and non communicating system and they've done an excellent job supporting the product, between training and also stocking them at the parts house so there is a no issue getting them to swap one under warranty. And as far as reliability like I said they've done a great job so far supporting us as dealers so we continue to sell them.

The general consensus is our customers love them as they are very quiet, space saving, and efficient, and I don't think people complain about the Daikin One anymore than android users complain about apple or vice versa lol. It's pretty easy to navigate, we have two Daikin One thermostats on our VRV at the office and they work without issue... and they have built in wifi whereas the CTK04 does not (unless they've changed that feature, but I don't think they have as of last time I checked), the CTK04 requires an internet gateway which in my opinion is annoying. That's where I think the Daikin One stands out, they know they're competing with Nest and Ecobee so they have to be on their game as those are popular products to compete with!

I never heard of Daiken before but the Daiken seems to make a lot of sense for me over a single stage system. I am also looking at a Carrier single stage and Goodman single stage system. Yes most of the manufacturers have inverter equipment, but the specs and prices are going to vary widely. They're often more expensive than the Daikin Fit because even Daikin has a higher SEER DX9 inverter that is a pretty big price jump when compared to a Daikin Fit. Most inverters are the way to go because they're so quiet and the efficiency is typically a savings of 30-40% compared to a single stage system.

You want to have a heat load calc performed if you’re unsure because it depends what’s above or below grade, sun exposure, insulation and especially climate. In phoenix you’d probably have 7 tons of cooling for that, but in Denver might be 3-5 depending on if it’s all above grade or what the layout is. The model you referenced is a 3 ton, so if it says 1.5-5 ton variable that’s just the model line and what’s available as far as sizing. Your contractor should be able to perform a block load calc at least and know based on when your home was built and design what will work

I would check with the dealer and make sure the daikin Fit will keep up that seems a little small for that square footage in Florida. In Colorado for a home that size depending on the load and design of the house you might only need a 3 1/2 or 4 ton out here but I’m surprised that’s all you need in Florida for that size home. If that’s what’s in there currently in terms of sizing and you’ve been comfortable and happy with it then that’s probably a safe bet.

I have not seen this, and find it surprising considering it's based on their existing and established inverter technology. The only issues we've had with them usually come down to wiring / communication issues if the connections aren't made well by the installer but this is an easy fix and has nothing to do with the unit itself.
@TheHVACDopeShow
@TheHVACDopeShow Жыл бұрын
As far as compressor failures though I haven't heard that, the systems are pretty "smart" in that they have multiple sensors to prevent them from damaging themselves. And Daikin actually offers a unit replacement guarantee on these for 12 years meaning if the compressor conks out within 12 years they'll give you an entire new Daikin fit condenser as opposed to just a compressor warranty like other manufacturers. I would get a second opinion from another Daikin Dealer in your area because if they're all saying that then it might be something specific to a batch of units or design conditions. I know Phoenix gets above 115 so they might have a different unit that works better in those conditions. If you'd like a referral for a Daikin dealer let me know and I'll reach out to my rep to see if they have someone!

Lots of people heavily regretting the Daikin product. We live in the Pacific Northwest with mild winters usually and a few months of 80's/90's. Almost thinking the standard American Standard 80/95 furnace and 3 ton AC for our 2200 sq. ft. drafty home would be a better fit. It's about 12k and the Fit is 15.6k after all the rebates. I love how peoples first stated reason as to why they switch to a heat pump is going green instead of that it’s more convenient. Yes ,a heat pump is more efficient at generating heat than than the conventional counter part however without renewable energy your just indirectly shifting the source of energy you use to create heat. So, heat instead of being generated by fossil fuel in your home is being generated by electricity. Electricity still needs to be created somehow by the power plants. So, if you increase demand by going all electric you increase the demand for the generation of electricity ie still maintaining your carbon footprint. Without upgrading the electrical grid or increasing output of generation you will continue to have rolling blackouts and metering of electricity. Exactly what is seen in California who also is pushing all EVs sales by 2035 yet they are still metering their currentgrid. All this upgrade in the electric grid to meet the demand of all electric is only going to drive your electric bill up. We have seen a 300% increase in the supply charge in our electric bill. Also many renewables still have poor ROI and high costs. In addition, people still forget creation and recycling of solar panels, windmills, lithium batteries also has a significant carbon foot print and environmental impact. I am all for new technology but just call it out as it is.
@TheHVACDopeShow

100% it’s a mess lol… all good points. We talk about too how one thing people don’t realize about “going green” is there is still a thermal footprint with an electric car because you have endo and exothermic reactions equivalent to 20-30 tons of heat energy lol. Very thorough comment! It’s expensive to add solar too, as long as it’s your dream home / forever home I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all. Recycling these components is going to be interesting in 20 years when it comes time for people to replace them.
