One of the most useful 911 videos I've seen, thanks for taking time to do this.

Very well done. I have owned 11 Porsche 911s 4 914s and 1 928 and driven the rubber off the tires on all of them. This video speaks truth and volumes about the 911 cars. My one and only expensive repair was a clutch replacement for $2200.00 and nothing else. My family of 4 even did a 900 mile Disneyland trip in it because I hit a dear in my Infinity Qx56 and had to turn around and go back for the Porsche. These are great cars. Fun, fast, and forgiving. Enjoy!

I have got to say, except of the green brake calipers (yeah - I am somewhat quite a classicist - either way black/silver or red if these are “S breaks" or yellow - if these are carbon-ceramics) - the car looks really amazing! You should consider while talking about the car, show more exterior shots. Also not a huge fan of the big Turbo wing (when it is not a turbo) - yet it looks still good - but if I would put an aftermarket wing on “my” 911 - it would be a ducktail.

Good to see a Canadian Channel with Porsche content. I’ve always wanted a 911, can’t buy new, but maybe used🤔 One of the concerns I was wondering about is service/maintenance costs...I see a lot of American channels but as we all know Canadians pay a lot more than US owners. Love your spec

awesome info for those who don't know how reliable, easy to maintain and practical these cars are......I have owned one just about the same duration as you and I totally agree with you on all counts.....except....at 6'5" there is no way any of my kids can sit behind me in the car. Otherwise, it is surprisingly roomy...more than enough headroom( with the seat lowered) and legroom for me.

One thing you might add is insurance cost. For someone over, say 40, the insurance can be remarkably affordable. I'm considering a purchase and got an on-line quote that was SUBSTANTIALLY less (35% less!) than I currently pay for my Solstice, which is much cheaper and cheaper to repair.

Great - very factual video. I have owned 6 Porsches with atleast one 911 at all times. No automative brand I’ve owned (German, Italian, American or Japanese) has come close for reliability and readily accessible maintenance info. The only thing you forgot to mention was when you have something as iconic as the 911, be prepared for opinions - most of which are unsolicited - LOL! Enjoy Dave!

Thanks for the informative video, being a fellow Canadian, I was curious to know if you winter drive the car and if so, can you talk about what it's like in the winter and what tires do you have on the car? I have a newer BMW 340xi, when purchasing this BMW I really considered buying an 997 generation Porsche instead. I think that the 991.1 will be my next car in the next 3 years or so...
@daviddwane17716 жыл бұрын
Cammie45 I had every intention of driving the Porsche in the winter but in the end decided to keep my BMW instead. I do know that they are very good winter cars as their weight is over the drive wheels but I can’t speak from personal experience.

Lawrence Davis mine is a 2007 Carrera 2. I looked for a well kept low mileage 911 and took my time. It took about a year to find this one but it only had 18,000km on it when I bought it. I couldn't be happier, it is better in just about every way than I imagined.

How rough is the 911 suspension compared to your BMW 3? Do you ever feel rattled or uncomfortable in the 911 while driving over mildly bumpy road surfaces?
@daviddwane17716 жыл бұрын
Andy Mackay the Porsche has a much firmer ride than the BMW but it’s not rough at all. It’s kind of hard to describe and it sounds a bit contradictory but despite the firm ride the Porsche is more comfortable over bumps. I have speed bumps in my neighborhood and they are least noticeable in the Porsche. The 911 doesn’t give anything away to the BMW in terms of comfort.
@aviator-kn8zq5 жыл бұрын
with all the suspension options and the modes that come with them, the 911 can be optioned or set up to your liking.

Guys, show this video to your wife if she is giving you a hard time about buying a 911! I would agree whole heartedly with this analysis. I have had a C4S in the past.... it was completely bulletproof for the 3 years that I had it. If you are buying new, consider what the options are. Some Dealers will offer a single payment lease option. If history repeats itself it is very likely that you will have the option with "equity" in the the car when it comes time for the buy out. These cars are not effected by father time much, and.... they are faster than anything we would need on the road. True limits of these cars can only be found on a track... something I would highly recommend. Thanks again Dave.

Thanks for your content....another Canadian follower here (Ontario). watched a few of your videos..very informative and honest. I've seen a lot of videos/reviews about the 997 being great value for a used/older Porsche despite the many warnings about the IMS bearing. I'm now leaning toward a 997 too for my next car. I have a few questions -Can I ask you how you found your car? (dealer? private sale? local find? out of province?) -You also mention doing a lot of your service work? do you do your own brakes/have you had to do brakes yet? I'm curious how much this may cost. -seeing as how you fit your golf clubs in in back seat....I'm thinking I could fit my old school hockey bag(no wheels) in there much the same

Brian C hey, glad you found the video helpful. I did look at a dealer first but was not particularly comfortable. I found that they didn’t really know the car very well. They tend to simply pick them up at auction then sell them which is obviously very normal but it means that they really don’t know much about that specific car. I felt better buying private from someone that I could talk to get a feel for and someone who really knew the car well. Also many people who own and drive 911s are pretty responsible professionals who are often pretty trustworthy. I have not had to do breaks yet but I will do them myself when need be.

Hi Dave, first of all thanks for your review, very well description. I m struggling to choose what Porsche buying, I can see you are driving a 997 which here in Italy they cost more than a 996 which I do not like (except the turbo) and cost less than a 993.

So how is maintenance compared to you 3 series? I have a 3 series and a Boxster. But want to take the plunge into the 911 life.
@daviddwane17716 жыл бұрын
Thomas Lee that was the very thing keeping me from taking the plunge too. I have had this car for three driving seasons and the most expensive thing I have bought that was not by choice has been rear tires. I have yet to bring it to a shop for a single repair.
@lmaternick6 жыл бұрын
So your 997 gets more than 20 mpg in the City? My 997 S with the 3.8 gets 15mpg city and 24 hiway driving conservatively or cruising in sixth respectively. It has some engine mods to make @400 hp (so around 70 more than a stock Carrera I think) but that is quite a difference. That said I never mind filling her up because fun costs. I Totally agree with everything else you have said about the car. BTW I'm also in Canada.
@daviddwane17716 жыл бұрын
L Maternick even driving fairly aggressively I get just over 20mpg in mixed but mostly city driving. I get similar mpg to my wife’s Murano.
@lmaternick6 жыл бұрын
well thats interesting. I shouldn't care as I said because the enjoyment per mile is worth anything, but my winter (Winnipeg) car is a VW TDI and I'm used to monthly fillups. I also feel the tank in the 911 is small, but again, what a piece of work these things are. The one point that you didn't emphasize that you might agree with is that these cars still feel like every dollar that they cost new (my window sticker was 130k), and non porsche enthusiasts that don't notice the slight variations through the years have a lot of reverence for even the 997. It is art. Oh....and I did get the IMS retrofit done for peace of mind. Miy Original was in perfect condition after removed with 80k on it, but if your doing the clutch or have the Transmission off for any reason an original RMS and IMS might as well be done too.
@jaketherake716 жыл бұрын
I've had a 2011 Carrera for a little over 2 years now. I bought a higher mileage example with 65K on it. Now it's at 78K. I had to replace a faulty fly wheel a month or two after I bought it. And then the engine mounts went bad causing rattling. Also the battery was needing replacement shortly after I bought it.
@daviddwane17716 жыл бұрын
Jake Kastelic not a great start to your ownership. How has it been since?
@jaketherake716 жыл бұрын
David Dwane Good, nothing else happened. I got new rear tires, bridgestone potenzas, with a dealership alignment. The car felt lots more stable on the highway. A year and a half later, it feels a bit twitchy and the right rear shows more wear then the left. Strange. I never heard of needing alignment done very frequently, but maybe they usually have it done with frequent rear tire replacement.
@daviddwane17716 жыл бұрын
Jake Kastelic actually a new set of rear tires is the only thing I’ve had to do since I bought the car almost 3 years ago. I wonder if your uneven wearing is due to a camber issue although it could be alignment too. I’ve not heard of frequent alignments unless you have hit something. Anyway happy driving.

Hi Dave, real question for you, first of all good morning, I am really struggling now, I went to porsche dealer and discover that almost all the cars now are 3 liter engines twin turbo, fine for me cause in Italy we pay extra taxes every horse power plus any extra cubic inches of engine size. Said that why a 991 from year 2015 cost almost equally respect a 991.2 brand new? I don't get it, thats the point. Sure at this point I don't even know which porsche I can get. Its not a money issue its a "non wasting more money issue if I don't need too". What do you think? it seems to me that those brand new one will go through a rough and quick value depreciation.
@daviddwane17716 жыл бұрын
kronos350 things are a bit different here in Canada. We only pay tax on dollar value which is a big reason to buy used. Also like you suggested, the depreciation in value is very high on a new car. I bought mine for about half of what it cost new and in the few years that I have had it they have not gone down in price. Also I pay less for insurance because it is a used car. I love the 991 generation of 911 too but the 997 is a smaller simpler car that still has all of the features I want. The 997 is perfect for me and my situation. Good luck on your search. Let me know what you decide in the end.

Joshua Pinter I live in Ontario and I did plan on driving it all year around when I bought it but I changed my mind and kept my BMW that I now drive in the winter. I do know that both the C2 like mine and the awd cars are both good in the winter. Just like a front wheel drive car even the 2wd cars have the weight of the engine over the drive wheels giving them great traction. I have never had a baby seat in mine but I don’t think it would be an issue. When we had our first child I bought a sedan but soon after went back to a sporty coupe and put car seats in it no problem.

You say that with such certainty. Obviously, you don't own a 996 and have not thoroughly researched the IMS issue.

There were three bearings. One was worse than the other two.

Very nice...just be sure to start pronouncing the name correctly, please. The "e' is not silent...

The e is silent here. Different places pronounce words differently. Porsche is a good example.

Owning a 997.1 Porsche is like owning a Classic Blackberry phone. The Qwerty keys are great for typing, the phone performs really well at being a phone and business tool. However, its old and new smartphones out perform it in every way possible but because you used to want one in the past but couldn't afford when it was new, you decided to buy one now. There you go, that's the 997.1

That's silly.

That was a useless bit of information- as relevant as people use to drink water out of the tap - now many buy bottles water - asleep yet ?

well, I still drink out of the tap. And I drive a 1990 Miata which is like an old boxster spyder that has lost power and shrunk due to old age.
