Porsche 911, buying a used Porsche, Porsche 997, what is the best used Porsche? the most car you can buy for 50k

I bought my 911 CSC (997.2) with 26k, today it looks even better after 84k miles. I drive it almost daily, take it to 150 often, and have zero problems. I was an M3 guy until my first test drive. I pulled over and told the dude "I'm fucking emotional".... he said let's try Sport Plus. That was it.... I'll never drive anything else. Ever. You chose right!

The 997 is a future collectors car, collectors in England are snapping up the manual gear box forcing me to double up and buy before it becomes too sought after like the 993. Nice vid.

Excellent video! I'm onto my 4th 911 and 5th Porsche. I've purchased other cars (BMW M4, Audi S5, Mustang GT) over the last 15 years and I can tell you, I will never go back to another. I love my 2011 manual 997.2 Carrera 4S (black/black) and will never stray again!! I've driven the 991s and they are far too bloated and I cannot stand electronic steering. I don't care how sensitive they make it, it just doesn't feel the same. Cheers brother!

I ask as looking to buy but not sure which model n I’m at the same point as u r in life n wen uve been bitten by that 911 bug there’s no going back ah! It’s like the whore of cars man, one suck n ur hooked! Loooool! I also agree the 991 is like the skinny bird whose put on a bitta weight on her arse....it just don’t work! John

I just got back from the dealership with my 997.2 C4S that I have owned for 5 years I went there to look at a 991.1 C2s trade in etc. While there I spoke to them because I noticed no other 997's for sale I asked why ? the answer is nobody is selling their cars. Another plus is they are the most reliable 911 because of the analog interface, the 991.1 while being mechanically very strong the electronics are def more temperamental. The 997 especially the 997.2 is still a relevant and sought after car. The outcome is that I decided the 991.1 wasn't worth the money to change and my 997 still resides in my garage.

Just picked up a 2006 997 and love it. Pristine condition and runs awesome. For $50k where are you going to fid a car with 4.5 0 to 60 and 177 mph top speed and fantastic handling. Considered a new one and passed because of the digital nature. Great car.

David - Totally Agree with you on the Value/Fun proposition. I picked up a 07 Targa 4S with Chrono in Guards Red out of Texas last year. The Car had all of the tasteful mods I wanted (FabSpeed Exhaust, FabSpeed Intake, and Programming, Bilsteins, HKS Sway Bars, HKS Spacers with longer Bolts and the much desired Turbo Wheels) and it is a dream to drive and a Freight Train when you open it up!!! It is well over 400hp now and I love the 6 speed transmission. As it turns out my car is a Launch Car and 1 of 10 in Guards Red in the Targa 4s configuration. So nothing wrong with instant rarity to help retain resale vlaue. I love the targa features and all of the things that make it unique to a Carrera (opening rear glass, Behind rear seats storage, Chrome trim, etc...) As for the 4s bodywork....Who doesn't like the Widebody Right?!?! The AWD 4s is amazing in all weather including dry and is way more planted than the rwd Carreras I have driven. Needless to say I am elated to own this timeless classic!!!!

Hi Ian, and with the 997.2 car you have less engine reliability concerns as they don't appear to have the score piston liner issue which is not uncommon on the 3.6 & 3.8 997.1 cars. That's the model I would choose but they have a heafty price premium over the 997.1 cars which I imagine is because of the engine improvements.

Well said David, I fully agree based on my experiences with my 911's... When I purchased my 1st 911 in 1991, a 6 yr old 911 Carrera Targa, I purchased, kept it for 6 yrs, loved, cared, drove almost daily, took it regularly to the track and sold it 6+ yrs later for the EXACT same price $21,000 I paid, yeah I did a clutch as the lady was rough on it. If I owned it still, it My next 911 will likely be the 2011/12 997.2 Carrera S or maybe ... maybe Carrera GTS, Only because the new 991 Targa is too much of a price reach for me. Brother, your reasonings are spot on. UT what if... If I still owned my Grand Prix White with blue leather interior... today ... here is today's NADA value in Virgina: Low retail -$31,800 Average- $41,500 High retail - $68,200 Fair to say... $55K the way a good 911 lover would care for the car as I did. Yeah I still love that Targa and would again own a Targa if the 997 were a true Targa like the new 991. WHY did I sell that original beauty? I was on the track teaching alot for the local PCA Club and the race track ... and needed a safer track focused coupe for the speeds I enjoyed. Enjoy your sweet 997 Cheers!

The 997 is the last 911 to have the true classic proportions of the 911 and still be analog. It’s a sweet spot between the dreaded 996 and the newer 911s that are gigantic and heavier.
@Audidude
@Audidude 5 жыл бұрын
LOL, "dreaded 996". You've been reading Internet hysteria too much. The differences between 996 and 997.1 are largely cosmetic. The "dreaded" problems are the same. They are also addressable (IMS), or very rare (bore scoring). It ain't the only Porsche engine to have potential issues. All of the things mentioned here with regard to handling, performance and driver enjoyment apply equally to the 996 at a lower price point. Both great cars. Save some money and go 996, but if you're going to spend much more definitely go for the 997.2 with the direct injection engine which addresses the concerns over the M96 in the 997.1, 996,Cayman and Boxster.

I Totally Agree. I've owned 2 Air cooled 911s. 1985 and a 1989 Targa. when driving the 997.1 it has the same general feel of driving a classic air cooled Porsche 911. just a bit more refined. in a good way. I was pleasantly surprised. Also living in Arizona, a HUGE HUGE advantage to the 997 is an A/C that acutely works.

I have owned lots of cars and keep going back to 911 997. The car looks good drives great and performs very well. I sold my last one to get a new Mercedes convertible and honestly I hated selling my car . I lost 7k in 1 year on the Mercedes and I regretted It. Now back to a 997 again and I am very happy low mileage well looked after will work wonders for you and they are not expensive to maintain.

Bought a 2009 997 Turbo Cabrio 6 spd a few years ago (FabSpeed Exhaust and a tune). Like you said I did my research and the 997 just stood out as the sweet spot. Now, I did stretch my budget with the turbo but wow, its such a good car. Last year of the Metzger but with the modern interior. Love the car, do all my own maintenance and its been incredibly reliable. In fact, the reliability and maintenance requirements have been way better than my wife's 2015 Subie STI.

I’ve had mine for seven years, eight driving seasons, and the only reason it’s been at a shop was to check a very minor oil leak which turned out to just be a little oil coming out from around some bolts near the rear main seal so I changed that at the same time. Very pleasantly surprised by the reliability and low maintenance costs. Enjoy the turbo 👍🏻.

Hi Tony, agreed the 997 is a great car but there are many 997.1 cars atleast in the UK requiring an engine rebuilds due to score piston liner issue which costs circa 8-10k to rebuild. Understand the engine reliability issues were much improved on the 997.2 cars but you pay a premium for that.

Good points that I relate to very well. I hope I can afford a 2009 to 2012, 997.2 within the next year. I want the improved power of the updated engine with direct injection and higher compression. And although I prefer the manual transmission, if a good value appeared that had the PDK, that would be ok too. It also seems like the interior, especially information/entertainment features are evolved to almost current state compared to other interesting but affordable new cars. Thanks for sharing your experience and perspective.

Hi David. Spot ON! Also the 911_997 is the most reliable used car in Tüv tests. So you most likely do not need the warranty. I have driven over 100000 km in a 930 and there was a load of small issues and 150000km in a 997 with no major issues. I Drive the 997 daily, in snow at winter and on track in summer. While the 997 has lots of computers, it's the last 911 that feels like a 911 to drive. The front end still bobbles around, it still likes to understeer if you don't work the pedals properly going into a corner. The 991 is a "better" car for sure, but it doesn't drive like the previous 911s-- the front end feels totally locked down and the driver aids have evolved to the point where you just mat the throttle, turn the wheel to go where you want, and the car does it. The 991 also feels gigantic on the road compared to the 997, which it is: the new car is bigger and has a longer wheelbase. The rear-wheel steering means the car still feels nimble in spite of the wheelbase change, but it's hard to hide the overall larger dimensions of the body. Driving a 991 GT3 I always felt much more nervous about dragging an inside rear wheel over the apex of a corner on small back roads than I do in my 997... the 997 just fits better on the kinds of small, curvy roads I enjoy driving. I'm just sad that people have gone ape over the 997 GT3s (despite the 991.2 now being available with a stick). I was really hoping that the availability of a faster / objectively-superior GT3 with a third pedal would've dropped 997 GT3 prices a bit (they were $80-90k cars when I last looked a year or so ago), but instead they seem to have surged up towards $120k... back to their original MSRPs. Crazy. I guess a lot of people agree about the 997 being a more rewarding road car.

Certainly 997 Carrera is a lot of car for the price you can get one. I did not quite have that money. So I took a 996 which is pretty much the same car but obviously older (yeah, yeah, yeah IMS etc.) Ultimately the point is that 911, regardless of the year model, is the most fun car there is and you just got to choose by the thickness of your wallet. For 50 000 Canadian dollars ... I'd probably go for a 996 Turbo with sensible mileage. Alternatively I could go for a 997 Carrera (not S). If I had the money for anything - even or 2.7 Carrera RS I'd opt for 996 GT3 RS. I am simply too big to fit in an air cooled : /

Hey David, I am hoping to get a 997 911 for all of the reasons you have stated. A gen 2 Carrera 3.6 manual with chrono and PSE would be ideal because in my opinion it would be the best "drivers car" and value for money. Hi, I have noticed that there is much more choice for £40,000 if you go for a gen 1 997 like yours. Makes sense right. I have watched all the videos about the different types of IMS bearings fitted to the 996 and gen 1 997. This includes the cars with replacement engines from Porsche due to failure. It seems that the three different types of bearing can all fail and the exact type fitted can be a grey area for certain years. What are your thoughts on this prickly subject ?

What are the running costs for your car per year? (approx)
@neill9614
@neill9614 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Tax £500 insurance £450 per year. Servicing is every 2 years but as I have only had the car 14 months all I have done is had a mid-service oil change done at 12 months for £150. Car is good on fuel with a 6k miles average of 25 mpg, that's a mix of driving with over 30mpg on long runs. Porsche Warranty (included in sale from OPC) has saved me some headache and cost and that runs out end of 2018. It will be about £2k for another 2 years if i decide to renew it which I probably will at the same time I do the service which will be about £600. With tyres and bits I guess the car will cost me around £3k excluding fuel in the first 2 years. From a cost of ownership perspective (including depreciation etc) it's a massive saving against what the new BMW cost me to own in the 2 years previous! Hope that helps.

David , Thx , I am looking at a few 2007 C4s cars currently .. I may settle on one just for the fact that I can get clean one for less than 50k (same situation as yourself) I will just play it safe and get an inspection prior to purchase to rule out the IMS and more importantly the cylinder scoring potential on the M97's . You are correct that the IMS issue did improve as the years went on but the scoring issue is my major concern especially as it is more prone on the 3.8 models. I checked out 5 2007 3.8 911's and 2 had engine replacements due to it .... Wish me Luck !!

IMS issues come from 996 with 3.6l, it has affected the 997 2004-2005 with 3.6, the 3.8 wasn't affected with this issues, for 992.2 no issues at all at this moment.

As I'm sure you and your viewers know, that in early 2022, the price of the 997s have gotten silly high. Right now is NOT a good time to buy a used Porsche - or just about any used vehicle unless you're getting a killer deal on a trade. Even then.... Best to wait for prices to get back to a sensible level.

I would love to own a 997.2 911 in the future. I recently got into a 987.2 Cayman with 20000Kms on it for $55000 AUD ($40000 usd). A similar used 997.2 Carrera S is around $160000 AUD ($117000 USD) in Australia with not many options. I am not sure how this compares to the local US or UK prices. Regardless, Porsche made great cars in this period.

Good video..honest and accurate. Im thinking of picking up a 2007 997 Turbo my dream car ever sine i was a kid - unfortunately its automatic but Im in love with the car - worried about the warranty (has low miles 12k but still a concern) long term I think you are right - the value proposition is there and the depreciation curve is flat and 997 is much more of a purists car then the 991 in my opinion.

Hi David, cool vids, like them a bunch I wish you had more of them Lol Anyway I totally agree with you the 997 is the best money for any 911 right now especially on the Gen 2 models. What are the surprises if any, you ran into as far as maintenance with your car you have not disclosed yet? What are your plans with this car? Are you on the look up for any GT3's at all? If money was no object which 911 model would you buy today? Mine would be a 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 :))

The only money I have put in it involuntarily has been a new set of rear tires. If money were no object I might go for the 991 gt2 RS. If I were given a 911 that I then had to keep and maintain I would get a 2011 gts. My plan this season is to unwrap it in the spring, then wrap it satin grey this summer.

in my past I raced superbike for 8 years, so i know speed. I chose a Porsche 997 as my first introduction to a CAR that was fast because i am going to be 50 in January. I JUST wanted a car that was something that represented me and what i have done in my life a little more. Boy did i get a LOT MORE. I have ran an auto repair business for 24 years so in fact i know cars. Surprisingly i have learned over time that Porsche 911 line has been characteristically reliable. the 997 model is the same OMG i can drive it EVERY DAY and not WORRY!!! It is very impressively downright FAST on top of that. Not the overused label of "quick" used for Acura a lot but downright really FAST. I bought the S version and apparently the original owner 32k miles before me when he purchased the vehicle wanted EVERY option so it is COMPLETELY optioned out.. Even the Carbon ceramic rotors and 6 piston brake calipers are on this car stops AS FAST as my superbike did for lack of rubber on the ground making the bike not kill a car. i paid 42950 with the options the original buyer ordered it was 105k new from a dealer in New York, Manhattan Motorcars I had it SHIPED to my house in CALIFORNIA no less. OMG the BEST PURCHASE i have EVER MADE with a car. Astronomically good handling ON TOP of being fast. Which is RIGHT there like my superbike was. I know motorcycles power and handlin, i NEVER imagined a CAR would EVER compare....... the 997 not only compares but almost MATCHES the FEELINGS of control speed and flat EXHILARATION OF A SUPERBIKE and it is just driving a car!!!...... i never thought this would be possible but here it is the 997.

Dave, I’m in the market now for a $50k used car. ( actually the reason why I got to your channel). Question: what else fit into your $50k used car search - I’m debating whether to spend more for a 1st gen Audi R8. What are your thoughts and what were your other potential $50k cars). Moreover, any infamous 997 whistling at higher speeds with your car?

M Army wow it sounds like we have very similar taste in cars. One of the few cars that I still find myself looking at regularly is a 2008-2010 R8 V8 however when I think about it 1 I really love my 911 and 2 for a similarly speced and mileage car (that has basically the same performance figures) it is pretty close to twice as much money. I was also strongly considering an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, a newer Cayman, I even looked at the Lotus and an M3. PS I don’t have any high speed whistling nor have I ever heard of it. Hope that helps. Let me know what you decide.

Hi Bernard, I use the Harmony booster seat for my younger son www.walmart.ca/en/ip/harmony-deluxe-belt-positioning-booster-car-seat/6000195518298 It's hard to find seats that are narrow enough at the bottom back to fit within the bucket. I don't think that there's any pre-booster seat that's Transport Canada certified that will fit, but in the US you have some choices that will. I'd suggest a search on Rennlist to find the latest seats that people are using. For your service reset, I recently bought a iCarsoft PORII scan tool that is supposed to be able to reset the service reminder. They are available on Amazon.

If it’s cost preventing you from buying a 911, the Cayman 987.2 is an excellent choice. I’ve owned one for 3 years and it hasn’t depreciated at all. Drive the Cayman and save for a 911. However, I should mention the main reason I prefer the 911 is for the back seats. I wouldn’t use them for people but the space is nice to have, so that’s one downside of the Cayman.
@MrVisbokaal
@MrVisbokaal 6 жыл бұрын
I understand you’re point. But for some guys the Cayman can be the last step. For example a Cayman GT4 is for sale about €100.000 (used). I would prefer this one above any 911 around that budget. For me it a weekend car and I don’t need the back seats. A gt3 rs for example is realy nice but is a lot more expensive. ‘Budget’ wise the Cayman keeps winning for me. It’s not because people think the 911 is the best Porsche, that you have to have one. A Cayman can be the better choice.
@carter240
@carter240 6 жыл бұрын
MrVisbokaal absolutely, the GT4 is amazing. I’m just saying that even a base model Cayman can be a great way to dip your toe into the Porsche waters. Too many people overlook the Cayman because it’s not the flagship model. For most people it’s more car than they need on the street anyway.

With the exception of the 996 and early 997 IMS bearing issue, Porsches are widely known as "bullet proof". Typically unless you buy a track car or one that was otherwise abused, Porsche 911s are good for 200 thousand miles before you have to start to worry about what might happen.

Mike T mine is a late year 2007. The ims issue affected the 996 with the m96 engine more than other models. After the very first 997s came out in 2005 Porsche did a redesign for the m96.5 and m97 engine.
@grindymct
@grindymct 6 жыл бұрын
If you're in Canada you'll see as much as a $20K difference between a 997.1 and a 997.2. Considering the low chances of one of the mentioned failures it's hard to justify the extra $20,000, heck you could pocket that money as a rainy day fund in case you needed an engine rebuild/replacement (which would still cost you under $20,000 more than likely). I'm planning on buying one of these soon, if you get a 2005 you could have the failure prone IMS bearing but it would be replaceable so just factor in another 2-3000 for an LN Engineering bearing, if it's not the early 2005 units it will have the strongest version of the IMS bearing and I think most mechanics just say pull the gasket off of it and live your life. Drop some decent money on a PPI at a reputable Porsche Specialist, request a borescope to check for scoring and see if you can figure out what IMS you have. If you get it, regular oil changes, drive it hard, and check your oil filters at services to look for metal debris. (I'll also be having my oil samples sent to blackstone labs once a year for analysis.) TLDR; 997.1s are good value, just do your homework before buying
@daviddwane1771
@daviddwane1771 6 жыл бұрын
You're exactly right. Sounds like we did very similar research before buying. The perception of the IMS has actually been quite good for me, as you said it has reduced the price by a fair margin. You can also tell which IMS you have by checking the engine code- M96= older design M96.5 and M97 = newer design.
