Great Video Phil, been through pretty much the exact scenario you describe. Watching the Grandkids pulling in a string of mackerel makes it all worthwhile!! Happy days!

Thanks, I describe my trailer as a 'trigger's brush'. Most of the parts have been replaced. The journey has been fun and satisfying in equal measures. I'm really pleased with the outcome. Good to hear the Grandkids are the anglers of the future, mackerel are a great way to get them engaged in the sport. Phil.

Spot on Phil …I’ve been doing up and fishing from boats for most of my adult life …I love your set up , it’s exactly what I’m in the process of putting together . I’ve got the trailer, the engines , electronics , chandlery, electrics etc ….now I just need the boat ! 😁… wish me luck , as finding a good boat on its own is proving a tad difficult …but with the Autumn approaching I’m “nearly” confident of finding the unicorn 😁👍 tight lines.

Good advice there Phil. Been there and done that many moons ago. Don't have my longliner 16 anymore, but remember well that buying a second hand boat will always be a development project, and the outgoings on maintenance and mooring/launching will continue even after you get it as you want it. Boats ain't cheap, and if they are they can be money pits.

No such thing as a cheap boat, i've had my boat for 21 years but the money i've spent is repayed in enjoyment, I love my boat. It is nothing like a car, it drinks 2 and 1/2 MPG but we only go out to sea 4 or 5 miles and fish (stationary) once a fortnight so a different king of affordable. Great video's.

Thanks for watching and commenting on the videos. In the past I had a 22 footer which I kept on a pontoon berth in a marina. That was boating on a much bigger budget. For now the little trailerable Orkney works for me. Like you say, whatever you have you're rewarded in enjoyment. Thanks again.

Very concise and honest account the pros and cons of boat ownership. As a committed land-lubber, my unfulfilled dreams stop short of kayak ownership 😂 Houses, cars, boats, all money pits! You really need to be prepared for the toil and outlay. My maintenance costs stretch to bicycle tyre repair kits for my waders 😂 Have a great year! 👍

A super video old chap, I have a rule when buying a boat, buy one without an engine so you can put a new one in, or buy a boat with a new engine, this is mainly for boats with outboards. Your scenario is something I've seen so many times. 😀👍👍👍
@anotherangleUK Жыл бұрын
Thank for watching and commenting. Interesting point about buying without the outboard. Maybe I just didn’t have the ‘knack’ to get the old two stroke to fire first pull every time. Whatever, I’m fortunate to have the new Tohatsu with the electric start. 👍

@anotherangleUK10 ай бұрын
I decided on the Tohatsu as it was the lightest 20 hp 4 stroke. I didn't bother with power tilt which saved a little on the weight (and cost). I shouldn't think you'd have an problem with a Mercury.

Hi Phil, thanks for sharing your experiences. Can I ask, what are the dimensions of your boat and trailer. I'm asking because I want to see if a similar package will fit in the front yard. Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for the comments. I will take some measurements when I can and post in this reply. My new trailer is longer than the original so it's worth updating details here. Because I fitted the navigation light on the cuddy roof I have to lower the jockey wheel to it's lowest position to pass under the up and over garage door. That may not be an issue for you but helps if height is limited. I'll get back next week with the measurements.
@anotherangleUK2 ай бұрын
Hi @mokee03 Apologies it has taken a while to remember to make some measurements of the boat on my new trailer. The length 5.8 metres (from outboard to tow hitch) Width 1.7 metres Height 1.8 metres to top of cuddy roof but I also have navigation lights and VHF aerial up there which adds another 20cm. The boat specifications are on the Orkney site - the Coastliners / 440's haven't changed much over the years. Obviously measure any potential purchase before you buy - different trailers 8 inch or 10 inch wheel etc make a difference. Hope this helps.

Good advise, I don't have a boat and probably wont ever get round to having one. But you never know, sometimes boats come up for sale round your/our area. Love that very interesting collection of books you have., will you ever do reviews on them ? Great explanation on boat ownership, well thought out and great food for thought.
@anotherangleUK Жыл бұрын
Hi Oldbones. Thanks for your comments. Our area is not best for launch and recovery so a little boat on a trailer opens up options for the West Coast and beyond. My books - I do love a good read especially if it's about fishing. I get most books secondhand if possible. Hard to recommend / review as everyone has different tastes. In my view if you want a good read try to get a copy of 'Beneath the Black Water' by Jon Berry. That guy was obsessed with catching Ferox Trout. Phil.

@@anotherangleUK Hi Phil, Yeah a SIB did cross my mind and it's something I am looking into...With regards small day boats like your Orkney, is there anyway to fit a single ring gas burner in the cubby? Hi Peter, there are plenty of folk who do use a small portable stove on their small fishing boats. Dinghy Cruising Association folks us a galley box to secure the stove and these are usually a DIY project. Triangia stoves seem to be popular. Nice boat the Predator 165. I must try a launch at Port Eroll. Have to catch the tide right on that slipway. What's the fishing like out in the bay or up the coast by Slains?

@anotherangleUK lots of mackerel and haddock. The high tide there can sometimes be too low too launch boat, so need At least 3.6 to 4.2 metres at high tide, which is normally around 10 times a month

Smart I'll give that slip a try. I'd also looked at Portknockie, that looks okay.

In some ways your right and other ways your not. Im a late in life purchaser's of a boat, my first was on eBay it was up at a the Calder reservoir just north oof Hadrians Wall. I live between York and Lancashire . Used to travel up to it from York. Five hours each way for a day up there was only just doable. I bought it blind unseen in person i new the boat would float due to the fact there was around 400 gallons of water in the boat and it wasn't leaking out. The first trip was draining water out and then removing everything from the boat and covering it with two tarpaulins that came with it , in such away it could dry out. After a few trips we as a couple enjoyed the time together, and Calder is a lovely area, we joined the sailing club and had the use of all the facilities on offer. The boat cost around £300. I think money well spent to find out what and which direction we need to be going in. A gave the boat away to the club and the money they made on selling the boat would go to things for the club. I then Purchased A Parker 21on its own trailer a few miner knocks , the boat yard at Selby had been paid up for the year, so we kept it there untill we found some were to moor it. Were lucky we have a permanent mooring in Whitby. I did buy it to sailbut to be honest i think i had left it to late in life to go sailing again, but saying that we now have our Two bed acomidation in the center of Whitby that cost us les than to hire a caravan or a flat for a week 365 days a year. I feel buying the bargain is a positive way forward because it shows you what you do and don't want out of a boat with out spending to much to find out, I have a mooring in York were i keep my trailer for the Parker, it cost me £600 a year and now im looking for a small boat i can row i think the Orkney 14 is probably going to be perfect for me. Trial an error helps you to learn a lot about what you dream and reality are or what your capable of doing. Nic
@anotherangleUK Жыл бұрын
Hi Nic, most interesting to hear your experiences of boat ownership and thanks for sharing them here on the channel. You make very good points particularly about a boat providing 'accommodation' in interesting areas of the country. That accommodation can also easily be moved around from harbour to harbour - unlike bricks a mortar. The Coastliner comes with rowlocks fitted and the cuddy can be removed. My cuddy is fixed with screws but I've seen some fitted with quick release latches. Another Orkney model that could be worth a look would be the Spinner 13 foot. They weigh 114 kg as opposed to the 225kg which mine weighs with the cuddy. Just a thought. Phil.

@anotherangleUK Жыл бұрын
Hi, I’m not a mechanic but I do most of my own mechanical fixing. I found the issue by trial and error. First I put new spark plugs in, no change, next removed each coil and thought I could see a crack. Used a magnifying glass and could see a hairline crack in bottom of coil. Ordered a new one and problem solved. Guys in parts shop said the coil serial number was original part.
