Excellent video - rant included - I have the same attitude with people who don’t understand. Things I often ask… - doesn’t charging at home for a low cost and having your car ready every day without going to a gas station better than the alternative? - how much range? Why do you ask when buying a ICE vehicle did you ever ask it’s range before buying it? - Hybrids are like a toaster oven - not a good toaster, not a good oven - so if you combine the smallest gas motor with a tank of gas & the smallest electric motor with an unstable battery - what do you get? 🔥

Great info. My dad is still driving his 2017 Bolt EV purchased new. He didn't have an option to charge in his downtown condo until recently. He's been relying on free public L2 charging without issues the entire time. His condo recently enabled charging in the garage but he'll have to pay the installation fee and a monthly fee on top of that so he's probably not going to 😂 he doesn't commute and rarely leaves town so walking 10min over to the public charger once a week is no big deal, in fact it's probably good for him 😉

Adam, thanks for making EV content that is actually useful and informative. There are way too many EV channels that just spew out daily content just for the sake of making content. I really appreciate the way you present your information in plain every day language and add lots of easy to understand graphics to help you get your point across. Out of all the EV content that I consume (which is quite alot every day, for the past 10 years) you seem to be the most genuine and least biased I've come across. I started watching your videos about owning a Fisker just to get some insight into your experience. During that whole series of videos I saw that you were not only informing people, but also really trying to help out other people who might have been in your same situation. Most people would have just bad mouthed Fisker, milked it for all they could and call it a day. You actually went above and beyond and interviewed people with insider knowledge about the situation instead of just regurgitating some info from talking heads on MSM and giving your opinion. Keep up the good work and please don't change how you've been running your channel.

Really informative video. I’m glad you covered the lease loophole. Good point about doing extra research about finding out if the price includes the $4k tax incentive. One other thing I learned is that some dealers are IRS approved and you can assign the $4k to the dealer, so it comes off the price. This is how it works when you lease too. The $7500 is applied to the residuals. Also, as far as depreciation, my sense (no research) even taking the $7500 off before calculating the depreciation on EVs is greater than ICE vehicles. I think some of those crazy low prices you found from the search bare it out. You found a LYRIQ with low miles for $41k. The Level 1 LYRIQ probably stickered at around $63k (I just got a Level 2). Subtract $7500. That brings you about 55k. That’s about a 25% depreciation in less than 2 years. Not really sure how that compares to an ICE Cadillac. Great content! Keep up the good work.

I have been watching your vids and was questioning whether to get a Prologue. I pulled the trigger last weekend and leased a touring fwd. I took it to Kansas City from Wichita Falls, TX. About 475 miles each way. I left home with 100% charge and it took 3 charging sessions each way and then one charging session while in KC to prepare for the drive back. I charged at 4 EVGO stations, 2 tesla superchargers and 1 EA station. All of my EVGO charges were free with the 750 dollar credit i got with the lease. Both tesla charges were about 21 dollars each for about 62-64kwh. The EA charge was 36 dollars for 51kwh (yikes). So i paid about 80 bucks for about 1000 miles of driving. If the EVGO sessions werent free I would have paid about 200 bucks for the round trip. Overall, i got to most chargers with around 15-25% left. Most of the charging sessions took about 25 to 35 minutes, except the one in KC, because it was about 20 degrees out and I charged up closer to 90% to makesure i had enough charge due to the cold conditions. All the EVGO and EA stations were 350kw and the tesla were both 250kw. From my overall experience it seemed the best value and charging performance came at the tesla super chargers. If i didnt have the evgo credits i definitely would use tesla superchargers as much as i could to cut down on expense. They also seemed to have better charging performance compared to the EVGO and EA stations even though they were 250kw instead of 350kw. My pricing was also reflective of paying the 12 dollar month membership with tesla, but i made my money back basically on 2 charges with the savings and im sure ill use another within the next month. I just used a good reviewed generic adapter off of Amazon for the telsa superchargers and had no issue. Overall i would say charging added about 3 hours to about a 14 hour round trip. Again i would recommend the superchargers if you have a prologue for what seemed like the best value and performance on charging away from home. I am still going to most likely purchase a cheap ICE vehicle that gets good gas mileage to use for most trips longer than that, but its definitely doable, just expect to add about an hour of charging to every 4 to 5 hours your going to be driving. Also as a note, i did about the speed limit or a couple over for my trip, so generally 65-80 mph.

@Aslash304 The supercharger in the Tulsa, OK area was also really cool. They had 24 stalls and about 14 of them were in use and that's where I got the best performance. They also have those setup as pull in stalls, so it was easy to back in on the end one and have the charge cable right next to the charge port. The EVGO ones were nice because of them being setup similar to regular gas pumps with the overhead coverage which was nice at one it was raining at.

One thing I am careful about is checking who the dealer is. There are many very small dealers who might not be the best to deal with, yet some are great. And I think there is some paperwork that a dealer has to do to be able to provide a buyer with the tax credit. So, there is some work to be done.

The EV tax credit doesn’t adequately support EV adoption because if you make too much money then you can’t take advantage and if you don’t make enough money then you can’t take advantage. This is especially true on the bottom end because if you’re making say $50,000 and you’re driving a 10 or 15 year old air polluting ICE vehicle with questionable gas mileage and emissions equipment, the exact type of car you actually want someone to turn in and get off the road, then you’re probably not in a position to buy a new EV without the government subsidy.

I agree that there should be fewer limitations on who and how much for the EV credit. However, High earners can lease to take advantage, regardless of circumstance. And the government subsidies lower resale values, which will lower the cost of entry. I would also support a “Cash for Clunkers” type of incentive as well to get the 10-15 year old Ice vehicles off the road.

This is what frustrates me about these tax credits (and I say that as someone who doesn't think the tax credits go far enough). If you want to really push "adoption by the masses" or adoption by people who are not naturally inclined to adopt something, then you have to make is SUPER easy and SUPER accessible for them. Tax credits are a bit opaque for your average consumer. If you want widespread adoption, swap out the "tax credit" for an immediate cash rebate that reduces the consumer's out-of-pocket cash outlay at time of purchase. That's something that everybody can understand.

In Canada the EV rebate is just a flat out rebate and not a tax credit. It still does the same thing because people who really would need to get their car off the road probably can't afford a 60K vehicle in the first place so effectively the rebate just helps rich people buy rich people toys.

The Y is excellent. If it’s your first EV, you’ll be shocked at the quietness no matter which of the above you pick. The Blazer EV and Equinox EV have really solid interior noise levels as well. The Tesla is the best overall, if you’re into tech and features. The EV6 is the best road trip car (other than the Tesla), and also drives the most car-Like. I’d say follow your heart or your gut, whichever wins out in that duel, and you’ll land on a winner either way. The Blazer EV has a very useful cabin layout for cargo. Final thought: I loved my Y, and it’s the easiest car to use or own.

Excellent video! I love it when facts get in the way of people's wrong-headed and hardened beliefs about something. Of course, some people revel in their intransigence and embrace willful ignorance as though it was a badge of honor, so they will remain impervious to facts. I saw one person complain on FB, asking why everyone is so focused on the impact that record oil and gas company profits has on the price of a gallon of gas but don't complain or wonder about the impact of gasoline tax. Like I said, some people embrace their willful ignorance like a badge of honor. Anyway, when searching for used EVs, does the mileage a used EV has have the same level of importance as it does for used ICE vehicles? Should we be focused on low-mileage cars or does mileage not matter as much as it does for ICE cars? Thanks!

Since ICE cars require a dedicated owner to perform regular maintenance, the owner is a little bit more important. But, high speed, hard acceleration and braking, etc. will always cause wear parts to fail. But EVs require less maintenance, so the owner would be less likely to neglect an EV.

I think they are really nice. Especially if you’re a Volvo fan. Lots of carry over. The Polestar 3, on paper, is a really cool option. If value is high on the priority list, I don’t think you’ll end up with a Polestar in the end. However, design wise, both the 3 & 4 are top marks.

Always check your local incentives as well my car was 26k but so cal Edison had a 4k rebate or 1k depending on your situation and also some cash to install a lvl 2 charger in your house. I live in an apartment and in Los Angeles finding chargers isn’t an issue sometimes there are lines but nothing different than people waiting in line for Costco ⛽️ gas

I just got into an argument with an EV hater on Facebook earlier, and he was talking about him paying for my EV tax credit and NEVI funds for chargers for my EV. I debunked the tax credit thing immediately, and then he shifted the conversation to the NEVI charging subsidies. But when I posted how much oil subsidies were, compared to NEVI subsidies he blocked me. I guess EV haters don't like the truth if it doesn't suit them.🤣

I personally like devices as cheap and dumb as possible so I just use a portable EVSE on a 50A rated 240V circuit so I can get 40A continuously or 9.6kw. It was only 300 bucks, is portable, and I can use the plug for other 240V equipment. I avoid all these smart internet connected things because there is just too much to go wrong and break for what elis effectively just a fancy extension cable.

2021 - 2022 was the most unprecedented parts shortage in human history, every car was marked up or unavailable. This also happened to every gas car.

Only it didn't happen to every gas car. On average the 5 year EV depreciation is just a shade over 50% and the average hybrid is a shade over 30%. The main problem is the average EV is somewhere like 15-20K over the average hybrid so 50% of 60K is losing 30K in 5 years or 6k a year. But 30% of 45K is 13.5K or 2.7k a year. Even the ISeeCars data just released in December shows the average 1-5 year old EV is now actually less than the same in other vehicles. The average used car in that age range only dropped 3% YOY since stabilizing after the recent histeria but the average used EV dropped 18% still plummeting because no one wants them. Brands with the biggest drops? Tesla at over 21%. Lowest? Acura, Chevy, Toyota... The ones avoiding the EV hype. Vehicles with the most depreciation? It's all luxury cars and EVs in the top ten with the top 4 all EV (Model 3, Leaf, Niro, Kona). So not only is claiming they don't depreciate wrong, it's obviously deliberately malicious misinformation because all evidence points to the exact opposite.

The lease is a loophole. There are no battery material or manufacturing location requirements. The purchase credit has increasingly stringent battery material production origin and Mineral sourcing requirements. As long as it’s electric, you get $7500 off on a lease. And, unless the federal government has published an error, as of now, both purchase and lease are the full $7,500.

I would look up a 2022-2023 model 3 performance in your area right now, either for sale, or on KBB, in the spec and color you want, with the mileage you’re looking for, and add between 5% and 10%. There’s a very high likelihood this will be the correct answer.

I have found some cool level 2 charging stations in my cross country trip from Phoenix to Philadelphia and back in my BMW i3 REX. And YES I did that trip in an i3. One place was at a restaurant that was closed and they must have had video because, as I was walking around the building just checking out the cool place to eat, the owner showed up probably worried about who I was. He just questioned me but why have a free charger that shows up on a charger scan if you are going to worry about who is charging. A decent amount of libraries have level 2 chargers but some shut them off after hours. Many hospitals have free charging at level 2 and also Whole Foods. Some tourist spots, I was in Doylestown, PA and New Hope, PA and both tourist places had free EV charging, but not always with spots available. By the way, nice video.

The battery packs seem to have good warranties 100,000 miles or so but I’m curious to see if there’s any benefits for extended warranties.

@@Aslash304 GEICO had mechanical breakdown insurance, but you have to purchase a car new with less than 15,000 miles and back when I had my 2017 BMW four series They fixed my transmission that needed to be rebuilt at the cost of $9000 …. GEICO sent out a representative to check the vehicle at the dealer. They confirmed they needed a new one simple and easy. But I know with your analytical mind and your deep dive you’ll be able to let us know if there’s any value in the extended warranty

@@Lightdog555It is my opinion that the driver of a car can immediately identify whether or not they are a candidate for an extended warranty. On street parking, super high mileage, dangerous parking conditions at work, poor weather conditions where you live, very high likelihood of attempts to test the limits of a car’s performance…these are extended warranty candidates. I am scared to death of hurting my vehicle. And I drive, park, clean, and maintain it this way. If a driver were to be on the other end of the spectrum, then extended warranty may be a consideration. And this is always the most accurately predicted by historical performance.

I own 2 EVs, the dreaded Fisker Ocean One and a 2020 BMW i3s REX. The REX is a scooter engine that runs on 2.2 gallons of gas and can maintain the state of charge on the high voltage, IF you know how to carefully use it. It will get you 80 miles of added range on the 2.2 gallons and hold the state of charge constant IF you are not going uphill at 75mph with the AC blasting. So, it will get you about 170 miles on all electric and 70-80 in "hybrid" mode. So, you can really be polite with the i3 REX as you can gas up and get to the next charging station within 80 miles or stop for a little more gas to make it further. So, I have zero range anxiety with the BMW. As for the Ocean I have not gone long distances yet but 360 or realistically 320 miles seems plenty. I do, however, run an at home level 2 charger. On any given day I drive about 50 miles and even a level 2 will take, in excess of 4 hrs to get the 50 miles back. So, plugging in at night, which after 9pm the cost per kWh is less, so 9pm plus 4-5 hrs gets me the 50miles back by around 2am. If I was running a level 1 I would be in trouble or have to find a level 2 or fast charge to supplement. I do not see how anyone can use an EV with a level 1. This is America, we do not use public transit and many have commutes that surpass the speed to charge with a level 1.

Disclaimer: if you already own one, ignore my comment. But I would never recommend anyone buy one. It’s the only 2023 EV you can buy with no warranty or parts support. If you get a scratch on your door, that’s a total. If you’ve done your research, and understand the $50 a month, must have Membership to the FOA, with likely dead set 5 year connectivity maximum cannot be avoided, and that every single thing you have to do to this vehicle will be difficult, time consuming, and extremely expensive, or, the most likely, not possible at all, then you could consider getting one. If I were you I would wait for the 1200-1500 people who are about to get a settlement from Hagens Berman to get rid of their examples, because that could be the floor for resale. I would never pay more than $10k for a perfect, trouble free, fully updated example. At $25k, you are being diabolically ripped off. However, you shouldn’t have trouble finding one.

Thank you for this! I have been a stock owner with the SPAQ then FSR at $10-$30. Did really well. And sold. Never bought a car but had a reservation but they went BK then I canceled it. I wanted one for the design etc. I’m very familiar with the company for a long time. I’m familiar with the issue. I thought if I found the bottom in the price. It could be a good risk vs reward for the ones with 100-200 miles at some dealers with 2.2 and all recalls done. There are some $7,500 rebates I can get along with the $4k rebate, I can stack them. So I could get it for 11-13k now brand new (2023) at a dealer. I just hope to find out if the $4,000 rebate for the IRS is available on this one. The dealer doesn’t know or doesn’t think so. I’ve seen both sides of yes and no. I’d like to know based on your research did you know does it qualify for the $4k rebate? Thank you for all these vids. Great content!

All EVs qualify for a $7,500 lease credit. I think as far as a 2024 vs 2025, wireless CarPlay may be a feature to consider. I don’t think the port really matters as much as what chargers you will be using, and whether that port matches your use case. And at the end of the day, the best deal is the one you should go with. Always get the best possible deal.

Good shopping tips. I'm in the market for a cheap Bolt also. Agree that the most frustrating thing is determining if the rebate has already been factored in. I'm in a slightly different situation than you in that I'm not eligible for the rebate. Do you think used EV prices are artificially high right now because dealers are factoring in the fact that you will get the rebate? The market is always the major player. You might be right on all fronts. In my area used EVs are 15-30% more, because they are rare. In areas where EVs are high volume, prices are much lower, and I also believe the tax credit is being used to move the units. Finally, The best time to buy is the time you need one. And if you’re waiting for a unicorn of a good time to buy, it’s not likely to ever get as good as you want it to. A functional, good condition EV battery pack is worth $8-$10k, so there’s a higher floor than ICE vehicles. I’d recommend picking a very specific trim, color, and year, and then waiting til you get exactly what options you want. Or, just pick a number you feel is a good enough deal. And don’t hesitate to search nationwide. Good luck with your purchase!

Funny enough I talked to a salesperson at Ki-Po Chevy yesterday where you bought yours and he said they are selling like hotcakes so there is probably little incentive for dealers to bargain. I did get about $1500 off a 2018 without CCS like yours (but with higher mileage) at another dealer just by asking but it still seems like a lot. I think I've decided to wait it out for now and see what happens in the market if and when the rebate goes away. I hope it doesn't even if it might work in my favour. I was planning to import it to where I live in Canada and with the exchange rate today it means I really need to look only at rock bottom priced units to be affordable. It might actually be a better deal to buy a higher mileage one domestically and not have to deal with the import process. There are a ton of used Bolts in Quebec where they have just cut the used EV incentive in half starting January 1st (I don't qualify for it either since I live in Ontario). I don't *need* one but we live in the country and have made do with our Ioniq 5 for the past 2 years which was fine until we experienced an issue with it last month and couldn't charge it at home. It still worked at DC fast chargers but the closest one to us is over 30 miles away so that made it super inconvenient. It would also be nice to leave a car with my wife in the event I need to go help my aging parents 3+ hours away.

Speaking of Buc-Ee’s, you can now charge there. Maybe not all of them, yet? It’s Chargepoint DCFC and expensive, but it’s there! I’ve used DCFC twice in the 2 years I’ve had my car, once to use some of my EA credit, and once to take a picture of my car charging at a Buc-Ee’s. Yeah, I didn’t have to actually start the charging session, but why not actually get some juice and go inside for a bit?

I charged at one in Missouri that had Tesla chargers. The best part was when we got there the place was absolutely jammed with cars to the point that there were lines at the gas pumps but not at the chargers. I plugged in and was able to go inside while the folks needing gas had to wait.

If you can find a first generation Tesla Model S from a private party, it may retain "Free Unlimited Supercharging" and connectivity. For me, that has saved over $2600/year in "fuel" and connectivity subscription. If the sale goes through a dealer, Tesla terminates this feature. I've bought 2 of these and they are a bargain, IMO. Plenty of "high mileage" Model Ss out there that have 100K+ of trouble-free use remaining. And a (shrinking) handful are still under drivetrain warranty.

I'm confused about the irs rule "Not have already been transferred after August 16, 2022 to a qualified buyer". Im just trying to understand if say a 2017 ev has been sold three times between 2017 and 2019 but then has NOT been sold since 2019 does that vehicle qualify? Is that technically a one owner since that August date of 2022? I'm totally confused on that part 🤔 thx do you or anyone else that can help me understand that! 😉

If it has been sold to 4 owners before 2019, but none after, it should qualify. The only way to truly know is have the dealer run it for eligibility. They have access to the tools.

I can't find one dealer in all of metro Phoenix that will do the *used" EV text credit at the point of sale.. 😞 do you know if this is the norm for everywhere? I know many dealershipsb are doing the new car credit at the point of sale but I can't seem to find anybody doing it for used... It's like they don't want to do it for the used cars for some reason... @@J.J.Stokes You can’t claim it. They have to claim it for you. There’s no longer a way for the individual to file. I would find a car online that qualifies and call the dealer. Every New car dealer will already be registered (except Stellantis brands). I hope this helps

@@Aslash304 they're all telling me I can claim it (not that I believe them) and this is from the IRS website under the requirements for the used vehicle credit.. "How to claim the credit You can apply the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit immediately toward the amount you pay for the vehicle by transferring the credit to the dealer or you can wait and claim the credit when you file your tax return." 'To transfer the credit at the time of sale, you must buy the vehicle from a registered dealer primarily for personal use (not for resale).' Am I missing something? It looks like that says I can claim it on my personal taxes.. I've contacted at least a half a dozen major dealerships and none of them want to give me the point of sale credit for a qualifying used vehicle. 🙄

@@J.J.Stokes “Transferring the credit to the dealer” means exactly that. If the dealer won’t give you the credit, there’s a very good chance they aren’t registered. Which means you won’t be able to get the paper work you need to file it yourself. So, sure, you can bet that a dealer will Give you the right paperwork. But if they can’t give you the credit at the time of sale, you’re taking a massive risk of not getting it.

Prologue and Equinox EV. Easy to find under $300 a month lease on both. The best for the money is Model 3 Long Range RWD. Those are also in the 3’s on a lease and around $34k to buy. Those are the best deals.

The biggest problem with disinformation is the fact that it attacks folks who are the best positioned to own an EV hassle-free, headache-free: a home owner who has the ability to install a level 2 charger in own garage, who commutes a few miles a day, who has a spare vehicle for road trips, who can use the EV as a dedicated commuter, never even needing to try to road trip the EV. There are way too many folks in that group who would say they don't know how to keep 2 cars, one EV for commute, one HEV, PHEV, ICE for occasional trips. They would say it's better to have a vehicle for all use cases; they will buy a Chevrolet Suburban for all their needs. However, when you get to visit their property you notice an expensive RV, towed by an extra heavy duty truck, a quad, a 4x4 ATV, an expensive motorcycle, a snowmobile, a side-by-side, a convertible ICE sports car/muscle car and some other toys. Yet, the main driving is done in that Suburban, about 10 miles commute daily occupied by one person, occasionally two!

This has been my transition path. Our family had an old ICE minivan.We needed a second vehicle due to work. I want to go EV but contrary to the video back in 2021 there just wasn't good charging infrastructure in my area. I decided to go PHEV for a little commuter and efficient travel car. Then we replaced the minivan with a bigger PHEV and then the plan is to replace my commuter with an EV next but there is still literally ONE higher than 100kw charger between my town and a couple of long range destinations I drive to regularly. I may just have to stick with my existing car for as long as possible until infrastructure catches up.
