Very helpful and pain saving. On a platform of self-serving PT Barnumites - you give info without hype. Oh - just a tip - on your camera, if you can turn off the autofocus and get enough exposure you can avoid the focus hunting when you move your hands. The natural motion of your hands is not the problem it helps you communicate and is important.

Another excellent video. I agree with your points. Buyers need to realize that auctions are designed to get the highest price for the seller. The goal is to work against the buyer so that they overbid. The key is to do research to get the fair value of the item beforehand. Otherwise you are bidding blind which can lead to overpaying in a bidding war. I would also be careful buying from auctions from popular KZbin channels and high profile sellers. There will be more buyers to potentially compete with and chances of getting an item at or below fair market value are decreased. Instead look for sellers that have items you may want. With WhatNot having no return policy be careful buying. Looking forward to more of your videos.

Thanks for breaking down Whatnot. I was curious but too lazy to figure out how it all worked.

Jim touched upon this, but I only target auctions held by sellers I trust. How do you know who to trust? Those are sellers who take the time to provide specific information about their lots, including condition, in their WN store for the auction; who take the time to talk about the condition before auctioning off the lot; and who take the time to show, as best they can, certain defects before auctioning off the lot. Also, if a seller has a KZbin and/or IG presence, check out their videos and posts. You can learn a lot about what they may know or not know about grading comics. And, as always, it doesn't cost you anything to just watch an auction. The first time I attended a YT and WN auction, I didn't bid. I just watched, both to learn how it worked and to get a sense if this was a seller whom I wanted to buy from. I've popped into some WN auctions held by sellers who were unknown to me, and within minutes, I knew these were not auctions in which I wanted to bid.

As usual, very good video. Portraying both pro's and cons of buying on Whatnot, it's growing still so we'll need to keep an eye out on it.

Whatnot sounds a little more complicated and troublesome than an average online auction, IMO. Definitely not for someone like me who needs a little more time for my buying thought process cycle to complete.

I understand what your saying...sellers go one way the market goes another. Price drops can only go temporary and swing on happenstance. A decade ago you can get a hulk 181 for a few hundred. Now its crazy bull. Check out DJ Linx channel for new comic curiosities.

Great video, good tips. I have been on whatnot a few times (no purchases yet) and I am still trying to figure navigation. Mainly how to scroll down on their Buy It Now list or the items that they are going to put up for sale. For Buy It Now it looks like you can purchase the top 3 items or Search for an item. Not knowing what they might have makes searching a crap shoot. What am I missing? So far it has been too much rap music and swearing. I can swear as well as the next person but I don't drop f-bombs randomly in conversation.

All very valid points and good tips. Having sellers with limited knowledge of the hobby can be a boon where you can find things cheap. It can also be bad fortune as they don't convey condition in a way that helps you assess what you are bidding on. The limited time scope of the auction can also easily hook people into that competitive nonsesne bidding war which is more of an endorphin hit than excitement over the book.

As always Jim, informative and well presented. I've looked at Whatnot but the format puts me off - too much happening on the screen, too many flashing lights and noise. It reminds me of poker machines (or slot machines in the US) which distract you with their sensory effects so you don't realise you're pushing that Play button over and over. I'll stick to Ebay Aust., where I can (as you point out) take my time looking at the photos, even request more photos and contact the seller. On another matter, I must compliment you on the quality of your videos: you speak clearly and the lighting is good. A pleasure to watch.

@@randomposter5665 Cosign this. I'm prtcollectibles on WN and I do all $1 bin auctions and we were selling $20 books today for $1 two weeks ago.
@randomposter56652 жыл бұрын
@@vincehernandez I really like WN as a seller because you can move inventory really quick, but WN action is SOOOO unpredictable. Like you said, you can have a $20 book go for $1 or a $1 book can go for $20. It's all based upon the room. Now if this is your full time job and you have 10k followers and stream 10+hrs a day, then you can basically name your price.

Most of the time there's no grade, it's just described as 'mid-grade', 'VG to VF', or similar, this is why I stay away from whatnot. Most of the auctions are also filler issues, with the seller having a few key books sometimes.

Only bought once. They were ok. Didn’t like several hits to charge account for the auction. Would rather it grouped with shipping figured out. And sales tax. Which eBay does now too. I don’t know I delete the app then load it again then delete it. It’s too much of the Wild West for me.

You can get some great deals on WN....HOWEVER.... you have to be very careful on a sellers interpretation of condition. Some sellers (including myself) will only sell something in the NM range or will advise everyone of any flaws/issues. Some sellers do not care at all. They will show the book in the distance and tell everyone how great it is and when you get it in the mail it looks awful. An example was a Wonder Woman 196. It was sold as mint and when I received it it had some spine ticks, which I was ok with, but the back cover looked like it contained mold spots all over it. Had to trash it and wasted my money as WN does not have a return policy.
