Thanks for the good practical guidance in this video for choosing an OLED TV. I will add a word of caution concerning the 60Hz refresh rate of the LG A2 TV vs. the 120Hz refresh rate of LG's higher-tier OLED models: it makes a difference when watching movies. The test results on the Rtings review site show that the 60Hz A2 does not remove judder from movies shot at 24 frames per second (the standard frame rate for the motion picture industry). Judder makes fast action in films look jerky. If this is something that bothers you (personally speaking, it drives me CRAZY) then you should not buy an A2. Instead, you should consider investing in a TV with a 120Hz refresh rate that will eliminate the problem of judder.
@stopthefomo Жыл бұрын
Fair point, the problem is now less about removing judder but replacing it with stutter which cannot be eliminated without the dreaded soap opera effect! Ultimately, if you are sensitive to the jerkiness of either judder or stutter, you'll have to deal with a touch of SOE unless you're willing to live with the dimmer picture from BFI which comes with its own issues of noticeable flashing. LOL no perfect TV!
@marksalamon619 Жыл бұрын
@@stopthefomo @stopthefomo You're right about the stutter problem. I realize that the vast majority of people seem to have a real distaste for "screen opera effect", but it doesn't bother me, and I'm more than happy to engage some degree of smoothing to avoid the stutter that annoys me.

Good video FOMO...decent breakdown with pros and cons of every TV - especially for including Mini-LED as most people disregard those (unfairly IMHO). I will probably be waiting for the MLA panel to come to the C series, unless the G3 gets a decent discount and is stocked by Costco in the UK. Unfortunately no G2 here, so I doubt this will happen. @@WhiskeryMage61 I owned last year’s flagship Samsung QN900B, capable of upwards of 4,000 nits. I ended up returning it and got a G2. While the peak brightness was nice, in a dark room it’s overkill and it still had blooming in dark scenes that drove me crazy. Even if very subtle it was noticeable. I don’t regret switching to the G2. Yes the QN900B won in highlight detail, but the G2 won in shadow detail and to me that was more impactful when watching HDR content. HDR is not just about how bright it gets with highlights but how good it does with shadows as well. 1,000+ nits in a dark room is plenty for HDR viewing.

If you'd rather go OLED instead of mini LED, ID say the C2 in the 83 inch for value to performance ratio. Although, it might not pair up with your q990b as flawlessly, it will provide you with great picture quality at a great price point right now. But keep in mind it won't be anywhere near as bright as the qn90b and it will cost a lot more as well. The C2 is no budget TV, but if you're looking for OLED it's the best at its current price point. The A2 and B2 are options as well but will be a lot less bright with less picture quality.

I often move very often due to having to change jobs, so I need something that is built to be able to take some damage from being moved all the time. I also do not want to buy a lemon like a TV that arrives bent or a TV whose screen has blatant dirty screen effect like a pink tint that is not part of the original source material when I buy something this expensive. I would also like a screen that does not burn in too quickly. I also consider a TV’s compatibility with other gear when buying a TV. The need to avoid lemons eliminates all WOLED TVs except for the 2023 models since the WOLED TVs made for model years 2022 and before often gathered complaints about dirty screen effects like unwanted tints or vertical bands on multiple forums. The 2023 models have gotten praise for their great uniformity and lack of blatant tints. If there are any tints or bands in this model year’s WOLED TVs, they only seem to be found when those TVs are placed next to a TV that naturally does not have any unwanted tints like a QD-OLED. Since Sony is now advertising 83 inch WOLED TVs when 83 inch panels got some of the worst lemon rates in previous model years causing Sony to refuse to offer that size during previous years for its WOLED TV lines, this suggests that LG Display either fixed the process that builds the panels or is finally applying acceptable quality control for this year’s panels when LG Display’s quality control in previous years allowed an unacceptably high rate of lemons to ship. Since heat sinks help prevent burn-in and should toughen the panels up against physical damage, I will prefer WOLED TVs with heat sinks. The fact that MLA panels were made starting with the 2023 model year makes it impossible for a leftover lemon from 2022 or earlier from being used is one reason that I favor an MLA panel. MLA panels also are reported to feel hotter than non-MLA panels while actual temperature measurements show that MLA panels are not hotter than non-MLA WOLED panels, suggesting that MLA helps WOLED panels more easily radiate infrared, helping them stay cooler by ejecting more heat in the form of infrared. 2022 QD-OLED panels have a reputation for burning in. Second generation QD-OLED panels from 2023 add multiple features to help address burn-in. The first is using deuterium instead of protium for its hydrogen. This is a catch-up for QD-OLED in getting a feature that WOLED already had in its second generation panels from 2022. The second feature that the second generation QD-OLED panels add is what Samsung Display calls IntelliSense AI (v2.0). This appears to be a counterpart to LG Display’s personalized algorithm first introduced in its 2022 second generation WOLED panels in order to remove hardware OLED wear sensors that were present in first generation WOLED panels that forced WOLED pixel apertures to be smaller. I believe that both IntelliSense AI (v2.0) and the personalized algorithm estimate wear on OLED pixels by tracking prior usage of those pixels, estimating the damage that the pixels’ prior usage did, and compensating for the estimated damage. The third feature is what Samsung Display calls HyperEfficent Electroluminescence material. By using a more efficient OLED material, less heat is generated at the same brightness, or more light can be generated while the panel remains at the same temperature. Less heat means less burn in. Both the first and second generation QD-OLED panels come with graphite heat sinks. I am not sure that the graphite heat sinks are enough since first generation panels have gotten burnt in. I have to eliminate the S95B and the S90C due to bad build quality for both. They appear to have sacrificed everything for low weight which is important if you want to wall mount a TV. However, the trade off is that these TVs have been shown often to be bent on arrival. The S90C is basically a rebadged S95B except for the 77 inch model which the S95B lacked and a later version of Tizen. The S90C is made with either the first generation QD-OLED panel or second generation QD-OLED panel that has been nerfed to perform like a first generation QD-OLED panel. Only the 77 inch model is guaranteed to get a nerfed second generation QD-OLED panel, with the rest having a panel lottery while the old inventory of first generation QD-OLED panels is being depleted. The nerfed second generation QD-OLED panels are better since they will last longer. The panel lottery for both the 55 and 65 inch S90C models is a further demerit for those. The outdated main processors in all of Sony’s TVs except for the A95L eliminates them. Sony’s current TVs run Android 10, which is the oldest version of Android that Google still supports. I am afraid that they could get stuck with Android 10 when Google decides to drop support for that version of that OS. Later versions of Android can slow down old hardware or not run on that hardware at all, so I don’t know if Sony can upgrade anything other than the A95L to a newer Android version when that happens. Android 10 is 3 years old, so I can predict that it will get dropped soon. I don’t know if MediaTek, Sony’s main system on a chip (SoC) supplier for its TVs, has drivers for newer Android versions for its SoCs other than the Pentonic 2000, Pentonic 1000 (which will be used in the A95L), and the Pentonic 700. OS updates are important since I do not want to have my new TV, an Internet of Things device, become part of a Botnet of Things. I prefer to stream to the TV than to an external streamer if possible in order to prevent generational loss where each processor in the chain can introduce losses by performing unnecessary processing like scaling and deinterlacing before the video gets to the final processor in the TV where those steps are usually best done. Those who believe that the Cognitive Processor XR, the X1 Ultimate, the X1 Extreme, and the X1 are Sony’s SoCs need to learn that they are video coprocessors, not main SoCs. Since one of Android’s greatest strengths on a TV is that it can run apps that would require an external streamer like an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield if the TV runs another OS, I will have to exploit that strength to make up for the fact that two of the four HDMI ports are capable of only HDMI 2.0 speeds instead of HDMI 2.1 speeds, and that one of the full throughput HDMI ports is the eARC port if I want to use a home theater system or sound bar. Since I am in the USA, an ATSC 3.0 tuner is important to receive current and future 4K broadcasts. That eliminates the LG C3 since it only has an ATSC 1.0 tuner in its USA version. These reason are why I have made the LG G3, the Samsung S95C, and the Sony A95L my current shortlist of models that I am interested in. The G3 has the best all-around processor and finally has a mature WOLED display. It took the threat of QD-OLED to finally force LG Display to fix either its build process or quality control to quit shipping lemons with offensive dirty screen effects. The only major disadvantage remaining in the LG G3 is that it can’t cover as much of the BT.2020 color space as QD-OLED panels, though what it can cover is bug-free unlike Samsung TVs and is able to cover more of the color space than LCD TVs. The Samsung S95C has a second generation QD-OLED screen that has not been intentionally nerfed unlike the S90C, and has better build quality than the S95B and S90C. However, Samsung’s TVs have bugs in their BT.2020 implementations which don’t really matter in their “QLED” and “Neo QLED” LCD TVs since their LCD TVs can’t cover a large enough portion of the BT.2020 color gamut for those bugs to really matter but can really nerf the QD-OLED TVs when displaying BT.2020 content since QD-OLED can cover most of BT.2020. Samsung also has a history of shipping buggy or bloated firmware throughout the company including its TVs, SSDs, laptops (whose buggy firmware caused some of them to brick themselves with either Windows or Linux), and mobile phones (whose firmware is so bloated with bloatware like Facebook running with system privileges to maximize its privacy invasion abilities that these mobile phones can’t use a safer A/B OS partition scheme to perform over the air updates unlike other Android phones so that if the update crashes that the older OS can still be booted). However, Samsung can sometimes be pushed to fix its firmware. The Sony A95L potentially has the best video processing which can properly process BT.2020 content and drive a screen that can display that content very well, the exclusive Bravia Core streaming service that streams Sony movies at UltraHD Blu-ray bitrates, and Google Play’s big library of apps. The A95L should also be able to do Dolby Vision 120Hz games from an Xbox Series X. The biggest problems with the A95L are that two of the four HDMI ports aren’t full HDMI version 2.1 speed, one of the full speed ports is the eARC port, and the A95L is not yet shipping.

TLDR; Sounds like you should buy a projector. No TV will satisfy you.

@@PSYCHOV3N0M I try to list the problems of all the choices so I can find the fatal flaws that rule out certain choices and which minor problems that I should prepare to live with or work around once all of the fatally flawed choices have been ruled out. I know that nothing is perfect and am prepared to accept some problems once I make a choice.
