I have bought some of Scott Grove's lessons and listened to hours and hours of his music teaching and his VERY GENEROUS advice. The advice in this video alone can save beginner guitarists hours of frustration! You will be very happy if you learn how to play guitar from Scott Grove! Had to give Dr. Groovy a plug here, I hope you are doing very well Scott!

I totally agree with you Scott. Just want to add a few things/sum it up: - Get the kind of guitar you are most interested in (probably the type that is used to play the music you like most), but keep in mind that electrics are the easiest to play and setup. - A cheap guitar will likely be fine, in my experience they just have minor issues: e.g. my first one (Spear T-100, ~180€) just has the fret ends not perfectly filed down (but I actually like it that way) and the pickups aren't perfectly aligned with the strings (no problem though). I bought my dad a Squier Strat (105€): low quality tuners, frets aren't polished, but still a completely usable guitar. Even cheaper guitars should be fine after a setup. - Either get a guitar without a vibrato system or, if you get one with a vibrato, lock it down and shut off the springs by stuffing something like handkerchiefs between them (so it's easier to tune). - Get a guitar with good access to the truss rod so you can set it up yourself. - Don't get one with a bridge that doesn't allow you to intonate the guitar reasonably well (e.g. not one with an old-stye Telecaster bridge where you always adjust two strings at once). - You don't need to buy a physical tuner and amplifier. You just need some way to connect the guitar to your computer (e.g. a cable like this: www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_usb1g.htm ) and some software like e.g. the free version of Amplitube, which includes a tuner as well as a few amps and effects. Just be sure to install asio4all ( www.asio4all.com ) so you don't have lag. Alternatively or if you have an acoustic guitar you can use an app like gstrings on your phone to tune your guitar. - Consider starting with picks. A lot easier than using all your fingers IMHO. I recommend using stiff picks like a Dunlop Tortex 1mm. - Teaching: not sure, I just started two years ago and never had a personal teacher and just learned from youtube etc. Generally, i think that introverts are fine with learning on their own, using the internet, books etc. Extroverts will probably want a real teacher I suppose. Keep in mind that you just can't get a near perfect guitar (concept, build quality, environmentally friendly, fairly produced) that cheap. E.g. my dream guitars, old all-carbon fiber Steinbergers from the 80s cost 2000$+ in good condition. But just for learning, the guitar only has to be reasonably playable so it's fun to play it, so don't think too much about it.

My first guitar was steel string acoustic. My mother went to the shop and bought it for me. The strings fucking hurt but I kept going because it was such fun. :) It wasn't until I had been playing for a year that I started taking lessons at the trustworthy local guitar shop where I got a teacher who is a great cat, just right for me.

I really like Marty Schwartz to bad i don't like playing covers that much. It is a great way to learn and maybe i should practice some more covers just to learn new things. I always turn them in my own style and than i get to hear it should not be played like that but i like it like that. When i play my own songs people never say it should not be played like that. I just like writing lyrics so much and it is really satisfying to make a song out of it even if it is a really simple song.

My very first guitar wasn't exactly what you'd call.....Traditional? My dad said normally you start on a cheap shitty $60 classical guitar just simply to build up strength in your fingers and learn your basic chords and finger placement and most importantly calluses.....He said we'll skip that shit. So we went down to my local pawnshop, and I found sitting in the corner a "Vintage"? Takamine built in 1991 6 string acoustic, That I still have today. And let's just say it was a painful learning curve. But in terms of lessons, Any lesson Iv'e had, has come straight from KZbin. I'm not paying someone to teach me how THEY think I should play.
@groovydjs9 жыл бұрын
+Fps-Gaming-Productions Too cool. Reminds me of my dad teaching me to swim. Threw my butt out a boat on the Ohio River and the current took me away quicker than he thought it would. I swallowed a lot of water, but I could dog paddle like crazy by the time he caught up with me. lol

hey scott just wana start off and say i love ur videos ur a realy unique teacher i watch not only to learn guitar but ur also very entertaining and honest i like that :) can i ask your opinion on something because ive never played a realy expensive gibson and i find alot of people on the net will just say gibson is better just to follow the crowd i have an epiphone les paul plus top pro and i put slash signiture pickups in it ive been playing for just over 12 months now its my first guitar and i absolutly love it my question is would my guitar sound the same as a gibson slash guitar that has the same pickups in it ?
@groovydjs8 жыл бұрын
+brett etbr I love that you have your head on straight. You are dead on correct about EVERYTHING and REMEMBER THAT. If you LOVE your guitar....play that guitar forever until you come across another one you LOVE. Keep both of them then. Remember.....if it plays and feels great.....EVERYTHING ELSE CAN BE CHANGED. You've got the hard part out of the way. You LOVE it. If your tonal needs change, twiddle the knobs on your amp etc. as a last resort, try some other pickups, but the GUITAR is just something to hold all those pieces together. It must be comfortable and inspire you to play. You've got that. So, play well and never look at another headstock or brand name and just do the IMPORTANT thing....Express yourself musically and hopefully, one day I will get to hear it. Maybe I'll see you on an awards show!

Hey Scott, one of my guitars needs to be refretted. Do you think I can do it on my own although not being a luthier? Thanks a lot!
@groovydjs9 жыл бұрын
+Marcel Klein You can with the help of some SMART folks on here. Be sure to get extra fret wire. Plus, if it's a Maple board, they will be a lot harder to get out of there without destroying the clear coat. So, take it slow and easy.
@PredatorianStyl9 жыл бұрын
+Groovy Music Lessons I consider using the Fender Standard Frets which are already cut and curved for the correct fingerboard radius. Is that a good idea? WillsEasyGuitar got a video on refretting. Maybe this will help? Think you see him as one of the SMART folks on this topics :)
@groovydjs9 жыл бұрын
