Per the continental service manual if you got low compression what you need to do is go fly it for an hour and then recheck the compression. 80% of the time those low cylinders will come up to an acceptable compression, again that is the continental recommended procedure.

40 year old plane could be anything
@billcarrier96226 күн бұрын
Exactly correct, if the cylinders were replaced 300 hours ago and it hasn't been run regularly you can get inaccurate compression numbers.

Don't forget a thorough boroscope examination as per Savvy Aviation specs.

@luisbosch9433 I'm pretty sure the Continental service manual already requires a borescope inspection as part of the annual.

Man you guys scored another one. These early Malibus had a terrible rep for engine longevity, but we've all learned a lot about operation and maintenance of big-bore turbo Continentals in the last 40 years. Garmin glass would be sweet, but it won't make it fly any better. I'd refurb the interior for a fraction of the price and you'll have the ride of your dreams. Paint looks very nice.

Just a couple of items on this... I owned a few of these, with my last being a 2015 with the G1000 & Garmin autopilot. Great (4) place plane. (6 if your passengers are from the Wizard of Oz) Every time I put 6 on with small bags & full fuel, we were 600-800 lbs over gross - but landing in the envelope. Canceled several flights when there were advisories for turbulence. And the burn is 22 gph. The Continental NEVER makes it to TBO - and LOP operation shortens it even further. The opening in the pilot side window is a HUGE bonus not available on the newer models. Handy bc Piper's AC historically sucks on the ground. I took care of the weight problem by buying a. TBM 940.

My Malibu has 1400 lb useful load. I have the TSIO550C conversion which is a derated 350 hp continental engine which gives really good performance up high. Absolutely love it! They are phenomenal aircraft. There are a lot of nay-sayers out there but they really have no clue how great these aircraft are. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be in continuous production since 1984with really good sales volume. Good luck!

What do your annuals average?
@malibujack48526 күн бұрын
@@davidhill3939 they aren’t cheap. They typically run $15-25K at a PA-46 specialty shop. If done at a non-specialty place (not recommended) they will run $8-10K. This assumes you have no serious problems or haven’t asked for elective work. For instance, I’ve had my de-ice boots replaced and parts alone run $40K. If you get the heated windshield upgrade as mentioned in the video, the parts alone run about $35K. I upgraded my entire air conditioning system one year and that wasn’t cheap, and so on.

Owned a 1985 from 2010-2020. Get good maintenance. Mead aviation, Malibu Aerospace, Midwest Malibu, Casey Aviation. I brought it to my local guy, a great mechanic and friend but my first annual with Kevin Mead found $32,000 worth of missed stuff. Issues I had over 10 years: Pressurization failure, boot failure, hydraulic pump failure, gear actuator leaks, constant ac leaks, about 3 ac compressors, turbo blow out at 13,000 feet causing oil starvation and engine seize leading to a dead stick landing, crankcase crack, autopilot issues (KFC150 was a great autopilot in 1984). The happiest days in a Malibu owner's life are the day they buy it and the day they sell it.

Its cool buying planes and revamping them, I did the same with my L29 and Baron, you may want to look into the engine history on the malibu - highest engine failure rate and fatality rate of any single engine aircraft built. 3 based here at the local airport, in the shop more than they are in the air. Great concept of a plane but horrble engine marriage. Jamming a hot recip in the tight nose cooks the cylinders. There's a reason theyre cheap and its not because its a piper.

15 gallons hr and your buying exhaust valve’s like golf balls!! I would spend the money on fuel and run rich of peak. At least find out if anyone has had better success on the rich side because I know the outcome of running lean of peak. It’s almost a full time job changing cyl and exhaust components. But congratulations on the sexiest piston a/c ever!!!!
@malibujack4852Күн бұрын
@@trentcarlson4857 this is simply not true. Running LOP is less stress, less temperature, less wear and tear on cylinders. This is science not conjecture. If you pull a cylinder that had run LOP it looks pristine compared to a cylinder at ROP. If you do LOP correctly, your EGTs will be lower than ROP - fact. I’ve run my Malibu LOP for the 9 years I’ve owned it and have not experienced the “changing valves like golf balls” as you mention.
@trentcarlson4857Күн бұрын
@ really!! are you running the TSIO520BB. I get the science behind running lean and you are right the cylinders are extremely clean. But you can run just a cool ROP.
