I have never understood why people that build it on the ground don't spend a few extra dollars and elevated it for FUTURE use as storage, shade or car port.
@diyfferent5 ай бұрын
@@Uvoted4this You have to find that balance for your needs. If you put it too high, they become hard to clean and maintain. Put it too low and they are harder to get under and easier to damage. You have to find that perfect spot. I would have never considered building out the array like this until watching these videos. I had the old "put it on the roof" mentality. I like Sam's setup very much.
@Kregorius5 ай бұрын
@@Uvoted4thisaccessibility is the word. Winter: if you need it for primary energy source than you need to clean snow off it. Some elevation is needed so it doesn't pile up to the panels. But too much and the stick with scraper will get looooooong. Two decent panels are around 4 meter long. Add some to hold on to. You need to have control what you doing up there. That's 5-6 meters of stick you need to keep up in the air and be gentle with. Add couple meters of height for a shed structure- that 5-6 just turned to 7-8 meters. Doing it once or twice may be ok, but you don't want to do it every day whole winter just because you need it to keep your lights on. Cleaning: same spiel as last one. Even of you don't need to clean it too often, there will be some layer of muck accumulating eventually. Structural integrity. Some stakes in the ground is ok. Some long and some short stakes are ok. Make all the sticks long and wobbly - there will be issues. Best to start with the whole structure planned as she'd or car park with solar roof. But that's way more wood than some stakes in the ground.

Agreed, this is the route I am going for sure. I just need to get myself a tractor first... because a ladder/platform will not be safe enough when working on the top portion of the ground mount (or at least that is what I am telling my wife).

Very similar to what I did, at least as far as the base goes. The differences being I used unistrut instead of 2x6 for going between the two headers. I then fit three panels horizonally on each 10ft piece of unistrut. I then used standard unistrut hardware square washers to tighten everything down. This worked great except on the edges.... I ended up using the square washers cut in half as a spacer to emulate having another panel on the outside of the bolt. This sort of thing was helpful for mounting panels with different thickness in the frames.... also used cut in half square washers as a spacer below the regular square washer when I had to go between a fat frame and a shallow one. My ground mount for 8kw of panels was around $1000-1200. I also used roofing tar instead of those shrink wrap things. It is a good idea to treat it in some way... I considered sugi ban, but I used treated wood and didn't know how that would change things. Oh, and I used plywood I had lying around for one header, painted it, but it did not last. It rotted and warped so I found a huge overkill steel I beam. Had I not found that, I would have used treated double 2x12 (staggered!), that would raise the price of everything by whatever 80ft of treated 2x12 cost.

Great system. I like the fact the angle is steep so you will produce in winter conditions and snow will fall off much easier. With all the space you have I wonder why you did not place the two array side by side to avoid the front one throwing a shadow on the other one. Or does the sun does not get that low in winter in Tennessee?

The arrays are separated enough that one will never shade the other. The camera makes them look closer than they really are. :) We didn’t go side by side to keep the arrays out of our hay field and to keep the visual impact and size lower by one being behind another from our neighbors and road traffic point of view.

The racking system looks great, but it is not going on a roof, so you could have used 2x4 cross members to keep the same coefficient of expansion as your frame, then used cheaper hold downs. As it is, that mounting system for 8 panels is the same price as 8 solar panels. Personally I would rather double the number of panels I am putting up than have fancy mounting brackets.

But I live fully off grid in a field with a very tiny 100-watt solar system. In summer, I have more power than I can use, and 2 months in winter, I could use double what I have. But I'm in Michigan and we don't get very much sun for 6 months of the year. Your solar array looks fantastic!

I looked into the rails. For a 3 high x 6 wide setup, I would need 36 rails. That's almost $2400 before I buy anything else to create the system. That is my biggest issue with solar. It costs so much that the payback for the system is beyond the lifetime of the equipment. Something has to give if the solar industry is ever going to be affordable for the average household. I am 75, so I don't see how I could recoup the cost of a system in my lifetime.
@Tim_KentАй бұрын
Good point; those expensive rails seem unnecessary. I get the impression that they were intended to mount panels on a roof with a gap for ventilation underneath. Given that panels on a ground mount frame will have air circulating underneath, I would rather try to space the rafters to match the width of the panels and simply attach the panels to the rafters. 🤔

@@kencotton4645 Oh yes, getting free energy from the sun is awesome. I only have a starter system now, just 1,200 watts of panels and a 5kwh battery but I love a sunny day. I am looking to add another 4,000 watts of panels and that's why I am looking at this ground mount. You are right, it's terribly expensive the way he's done it but I don't need any of the metal he is using. I will just xcrew the panels to the wood.
@kencotton4645Ай бұрын
@@PersonalStash420 I'm not sure, but you have to be careful. I think that one reason for the rails is to electrically tie the panels to ground. Be sure you don't have to ground all of those connections to protect yourself electrically. I'm looking at, and you might consider using Uni-Strut. That is much less expensive, and Uni-Strut makes clips expressly for securing solar panels to the struts.

I like your build, but I want to be able to tilt my arrays, so I'll probably do 8 panels(200 watts) to an array to make lifting them easier. One thing I saw a guy in Europe do with the area under the panels was some raised beds. Shade tolerant vegetatables would work, maybe extend the lettuce growing season. Here in deep south Mississippi, full sun during the summer is too much for just about everything. lol

In off-grid situation during summer when the sun is high that is ok and most you will get more KWh than you can spend. But during winter, when days are shorter and the sun is much lower you need to squeeze out last KWh from your panels, and might need to run generator from time to time. Looks like you have plenty of land, and judging how steep the panels are quite far north, or angle is optimized for winter. Dosent panel stand the on on front cast shadow to the on stand behind him during winter, when sun is low?

what are the considerations for uplift of the arrays due to thunderstorms? Is there a rating of what windspeed your wooden structure can support from an updraft wind perspective for winds coming from behind the array where basically it would be like a sail or wing? My solar installers put an angled metal bracket structure on a flat patio roof I have and installed 5 panels on it telling me the solar generation from those would be higher than putting them on less optimal areas of the roof, but when we get strong winds coming from the sides I wonder. You have a much larger surface area to contend with.
