You can add a chicken wire tube standing vertical to help the small baitfish. They will quickly learn its safe inside . Or you can section off a corner with chicken wire so the baitfish can actually spawn. I've done it for years in my mini ponds and actually have golden shiners spawning year round

When you stock with minnows again, because it's an open pond, you should try putting a trailcam up next to it. I imagine many forest critters enjoy the minnows too.

Definitely need to put more rocks along with wood structures . The minnows and smaller bait fish do well at hiding in the rock crevices. Most definitely need places for the bait to hide.

@@lojofishing An idea for that issue with the waterflow under the pond...if it happened once than it will happen again. The only way to really fix it is to route a drainage system either into the pond (which is probably not going to work because of the trail/road) or make a waterway under the road and around the pond that empties into the spillway you already have. Also,it is a liner so be careful with the chicken wire not to puncture the liner. I would just find small dead brush to put in there or get a milk crate weighed down with some rocks tied on the inside.
@juanarappagis4192

Someone decided to stock one of our ponds on our golf course with bright orange koi fish. Fortunately it was a closed system aquatic wise. But, I learned two cool things. They will survive over winter while frozen in a solid block of ice. And blue heron love them. After it plucked them all clean from the pond over a summer he became an annual resident on our course.

You should do a challenge called THE GAMBLE challenge. You have three of your friends and there is three budgets. You pick your rod, reel, line, and lures BEFORE you see your budget. If you are over your budget, you get a Barbie rod and one lure of the other fisherman’s choices. @LOJO - to work out your pond capacity : Multiply length x width x depth. Then multiply the total figure by 6.25 to get UK gallons. 1 cubic foot (ft³) of water is 6.25 Imperial (UK) gallons So - a pond that is 10ft long x 10ft wide x 4ft deep would contain 400ft³ of water. 400 x 6.25 would contain 2500 UK gallons of water. An imperial (UK) Gallon is equivalent to 1.2 US gallons, therefore 2500 imperial gallons x 1.2 = 3000 US gallons. This is important to know as a certain amount of water can only support a certain size and amount of fish? You can overstock a body of water and lose fish stock to stress and disease. Considering goldfish can actually grow quite large (12-14 inches) the rule of thumb tends to be 2-3 goldfish per 300 US gallons of water, so if your pond is 3000 US gallons, that's approximately 10-15 (max size) goldfish. However - this is for keeping goldfish permanently and not using them as bait fish, so you're removing them at a certain size for bait purposes. I'd consider putting a net over the top to stop any predators from getting to them (such as snakes, birds, raccoons etc)? I'd also provide them with some structure/aquatic cover for evading predators? If you can find a couple of hollowed out logs (or concrete pipes) they'd be best?
