Thank God I've found this channel. I'm a big Lorde fan, and I do agree with you on this analysis. I remember listening to "Buzzcut Season" on the bus to Uni, and it really felt like escapism, as if shutting 'my eyes to the song that plays' was my way of forgetting reality. I see Lorde, I click. You did an amazing job, thank you so much. It helped me understand this chaotic song even better. Xoxo.

I’m diggin this! I’ve always taken this song as being stuck in this sort of never ending loop. I think the tenses used make me think this. She does mention remembering when his head caught flames, but other than that I think the song is in present tense. We RIDE the bus. People should see how we’re livING. The men up on the news TRY. Everything IS good. I LIVE in a hologram with you. I think that the cola line can be looked at as a moment of….reflection? Some sort of transition happens here. Some sort of realization is made here. Being on the same bus, seeing the same people, sitting by the same pool, hearing the same things on the TV but telling ourselves something different. This is burnt out. Let’s take action. This cola? This has a burnt out taste. Like I’m sick of it. So I’ll never go home again. I don’t know that home is a physical thing here- it could be a state of mind. She’s like dude I’m sick of this soda. Im burnt out. Let’s create our own reality here. Let’s leave that “home mindset” Either way, I frickin love this song

I interpreted that line about blue, meaning nothing is wrong, everything under this sky is right. Perhaps because in the end all of us live under these blue skies, on this blue planet. Therefore all wind up in the same place. Nothing wrong when nothing’s true. Suggests to me, that the protagonist is beginning to realize that everything they’ve been told is not quite true. Bringing it back to the news. I think this means that the sources of truth tell untruths. Essentially they now realize that the world is gray. Not black and white. And if that’s the case, how can any choice by wrong?

pure heroine is full of loss of innocence and watching youth fading away from yourself as you grow and acquire more responsabilities, to me it seems that hypothetically lordes love interest or friend got his hair burnt and chopped it off with a buzzcut, ending the summer while some teens of 16-17 yo start trying to get a jobs and work experience, so he says anyways i would've had to cut it down to get a job. Then we see metaphores about how lorde realizes that the easy blue that we all live in while we are young and unconcious about wars, adult life struggles, etc and only then she sees how some day she will have to leave that safe place (home) and start her adult life by herself with all that it conveys. I think the dissociation is really present in the song theme, when she says the easy in this blue too, like a double meaning in which we sometimes escape trauma and problems making them like they're nothing, (going back to the first lines, you laughed baby it's okay, when it's really not okay, the fact that we have to face the trauma of life along with leaving away our youth that wont ever come back) the cola with the burnt out taste, it's that fresh drink that was sitting in the table beside the pool in the summer while you're young and playing games and you go back to a hot sweet taste. Things fade, and the freshness did too, and there will never be enough of us, because all the teens face the hands of time and wont ever be teens again. But the memories live within us, inside a hologram. (my take on the song tho, but it's like just adding to what you already said, amazing analysis)

an amazing analysis...you picked up on all the nuances lorde was expressing. however, if you look at where lorde was at when she produced this album - the significance might make all the 'pieces' fall into place. lorde was 'nutured' by universal records and her manager tried moulding her into another pop sensation. this didn't sit right with her and she rebuked the songs of other writers and decided to write her own music instead. the manager was blown away by what she'd written but (and i'm hypothesizing here), didn't know how they would fit in today's heavily controlled and formulaic music genres (explosions on tv, and all the girls with heads inside a dream). i'm of the belief that lorde is singing about herself in this song - she is the protagonist (and antagonist). when her head caught flame it was an epiphany she had of what music she'd like to create but realised she was caught in a monolithic corporation...i think from this short synopsis you can untangle the rest of her song. on an extra note: lorde battled with universal about what direction she wanted to go in and after her first album attempted to leave the corporation (favourite friend).....she was silent for several years after but if you look at her song 'magnets' that was made in the middle of her first and sophomore albums, it seems to me like she's giving a war cry. then on to her first released song off the sophomore album 'greenlight' you get to see the depths she underwent to achieve her artistic freedom (if slightly battered). i look forward to listening to your analysis of 'team'. in saying all this, one thing is certain, lorde is a lyrical genius :)

thanks so much for sharing this! i had no idea.. that's so interesting and a really important thing to consider! i love your viewpoint about how lorde is both the protagonist and the antagonist, it makes this song seem like an internal struggle that's very poignant. ✨ and yes lorde definitely has a way with words! thank you for your kind words 😊

I know this will sound ridiculous, but I interpret the first verse as losing someone to fascism. The flame mentioned is embracing, not being nocive to his/her head, so I look at it as the harmful ideology that contaminates people and makes them validate and support atrocious things. After the flame done this job, a buzzcut remains, and buzzcuts are very, as you said, connected to military and army. So that kind of always gave the whole song a different approach to me. I guess I interpreted it like this because of how politics have been in my country in the last years. Loved the video, please bring more and more Lorde

that's a rly cool way to consider it, the flame being representative of a mental shift/intro to different school of thought. it's so interesting how our own background can shift the interpretation. thanks for sharing your perspective! 😊

@@summersentiment I feel like you would like the Joanne album she released a few years ago :) song wise, I think it'd be cool to see you deconstruct Bad Romance (it's cliche but I could see you having fun deconstructing the lyrics a lot) or The Edge Of Glory or something. and of course, Love your vids so keep it up :)
