The fight of the year of 1990 was a war of the wills betweeen the fastest pair of hands Philadelphia ever produced and the greatest champion in Mexican history on a preposterous 66 fight win streak. It came down to the last two seconds and one shot.

I've never seen anyone throw hands that fast man, Taylor's future was bright, he could've become one of the best to ever do it, his only sin was try to brawl the brawling king. The most deceptive fight I’ve ever seen, because it seemed like Taylor was inflicting more damage for the first 10 rounds but after watching more closely I could see how subtle Chavez’s defense, accuracy and power was. , chavez is so smooth and fluid with his punches that it doesn’t appear that he’s hitting that hard, but he literally beat the prime out of taylor that night.

Yeah, but Taylor was a shoeshiner, so while he landed punches in bunches they were not all that hard in comparison to chavez punches, despite being fewer, which is why he was more fatigued by the end of the fight than chavez.
@c.galindo9639
@c.galindo9639 Жыл бұрын
Nah. Flurry punches can land numbers but as far as effectiveness and actual damage. You can take 5 times as many hits of those as you would actual punches involving the whole body instead of just the arms. That’s why Chavez took the hits unphased and can counter with an actual given punch. Still he wore him out through having him to dodge more effectively and move around more often. A tough kid but he relied too much on his speed than actual fighting skill

Steel did ask Taylor twice if he was ok and he even got right in Taylor’s face looking directly in his eyes the 2nd time he asked him bc he recognized that Taylor didn’t comprehend the question the 1st time he was asked. When he saw the same thing the 2nd time he stopped it. I saw an HBO documentary a while back About this fight and Steel mentioned taylor had also illegally pulled himself up using the ropes and that was the 1st sign he picked up that Taylor couldn’t continue aside from all the visible injuries. The injuries Taylor got in fight were literally life threatening. He suffered permanent brain damage, he even tore his ACL when he fell and got his leg caught underneath him, a fractured orbital bone was urinating blood etc. that fight literally derailed his career and was nowhere near the same fighter when he fought Chavez in the rematch. That might’ve been a controversial decision but 100% the right at the same time.

Taylor didn't chase Chavez to the corner, he was led there by Chavez. When he buckled Taylor, Chavez brilliantly stood away to avoid a clinch. Taylor trained to stay off the ropes. That’s up to the fighter, his corner, and the referee. He still wanted to win that badly and gave it his all, literally. Everyone who steps in that ring knows what will or will not happen to them. My dad was Meldrick’s strength coach, he went in the ambulance that night. Even if Meldrick won by decision, Chavez did lasting damage. Duva was yelling at him to “stay up” during the count and Meldrick, you can see, looks over. Even if Meldrick was looking over, he still didn’t answer Steele’s call. And looking back at what that fight did to Meldrick, and the stories I’ve heard from how terrifying that night was after the fight, Steele made the right decision.

I don’t think Taylor would have been able to get up if he hadn’t used he ropes to pull himself up. Which is against the rules in boxing. @@travlishallingquest5719 I know. I watched the fight live . Ray and Kim were throwing haymakers. But if I’m correct. Most of the fights that have sadly ended with a death. Those fights were in less than 6-8 rounds. I don’t think fights going into fifteen is the problem. It can be many factors. Like a fighter’s past losses via KO . Conditioning. Late stoppages. Three extra rounds are not the problem. It only means more draws .

The referee was right ...Taylor was never the same after this fight. 2 seconds sounds like nothing but a boxer can throw 10 punches in that time .Chavez was almost inhuman ...it's brutal to watch a man getting broke but that's what happened Taylor.

Not a Chavez Jr. Or Steel fan, but the right call was made that night. Taylor was out on his feet, and was asked if he can continue and gave no response. Richard made the tough and controversial decision to pull the plug

Not even tough or controversial. In the moment he was zoning in on what he knew to do and what to expect. He did all he could as a ref to tell if the fighter was still aware of everything going on. Taylor looked like a zombie even with extra counts and asked if he was ok and with the ref staring directly in his eyes right in front of him

Not only did he use the ropes to get himself up, he was also saved from falling back by those same ropes. Good call by Richard. Rematch should’ve been sooner and even Julio said he deserved it in post fight interview. What a fight tho!

The amount of time left should have no bearing on the decision to end the fight. If it's a situation where the ref would stop the fight if it were round 6, then it's a situation where he should stop the fight even with 5 second left.

Still one of the most brutal fights I've ever seen. As beautiful as it is to watch two elite warriors in their prime bang it out, it's also hard to watch because of the insane amount of damage both guys took. That kind of beating will take years off the clock no matter who you are. It was controversial, but it was a good stoppage. You could see in Taylor's eyes that he was completely checked out, his body was moving but his mind was completely wiped. If he had gone back towards Chavez for another 5 seconds we might have ended up with another Kim Duk-koo situation.

The ref counted to 10 and Taylor was still holding on to the ropes. The ref couldn’t give him extra seconds after the 10 count to let him recover and let go of the ropes. Correct stoppage.

Damn. This is so beautiful. I am in absolute awe of what I just seen here. Now being there would have been something else entirely in itself. That was intense and heart pounding, jaw dropping action. I agree with the ref. He gave him 4 extra counts and clearly asked if he was good, to which no response or even awareness of what happened was even given. The aftermath also speaks for itself. The kid had heart but youth can do so much against experience. This is absolutely spectacular and I loved every second of it

Chavez in rosario mode had deceptively fast hands good defense with constant head movement and feints and the most aesthetically pleasing punching technique he was a complete fighter i would consider him the best fighter in lightweights history but one thing that is not even up for debate is that he would be the A side of any fight against any legend 💯

Wow, thank you for illuminating the facts of this fight. I remember seeing this on TV ages ago and thinking Meldrick got completely robbed and that Steele must be in Chavez's pocket. I see now how deceptive Chavez's power was, also the guy had a chin made of solid concrete. Still, with only 5 seconds to go...one wonders: why just let it go on? On points, Chavez would've lost, though he actually won. Perfect example of how point-scoring isn't the best to determine a true winner.

Steele was absolutely correct. Taylor was absolutely beat to pieces and Chavez does not appear to be hurt or hurting at the end. Taylor had won the boxing match while losing the punching contest.

Most fans failed to realize that Taylor's late trainer, Lou Duva, stepped onto the ring apron while Richard Steele was giving Taylor a standing 8 count--which is an automatic disqualification. So, even if Steele had let Taylor continue, Chavez' promotor Don King would have had the decision quickly overturned and Taylor would have been DQ'd.

When boxers and trainers came to know the importance of ducking dangerous boxers and fighting them when they are all washed up, meldrick Taylor was never the same after he faced Julius Chavez, he was urinating blood and was hospitalized for months after this fight, and he lost a lot of his agility and athleticism after this fight.

When asked afterward to recount the final seconds of the bout, Taylor said, "(Steele)) didn’t say anything to me. He didn’t ask, ‘Are you OK,’ count, or give me no kind of directions. I nodded my head, ‘I’m OK, I’m OK.’ And he still stopped it.” But repeated viewings of the videotape--which Taylor had not seen--reveal that Steele did indeed count and ask Taylor if he was OK. And Taylor did not respond, either verbally or with gestures, until after Steele waved the bout off.
