Dude this is the best thing I have ever witness I never thought I would see pure internet stupidity to the point where it made me laugh like a mad man. Like this is so silly you can't really be mad at it,more or less laugh at the absurdist nature of it all in terms of buzzfeeds Low quality. It basically as low quality to the point its funny as Very low level Creepypasta thats just Comes across as a weird teens angsty story rather then legitment horror.

Adam Ellis is a great cartoonist. Buzzfeed forced him to pump out shitty comics that he ended up just putting together like a puzzle bc he pre-drew the assets to meet the impossible deadlines. He’s truly amazing and it makes me mad that they’re probably just using his idea because they technically own it, just like they do the concept of “unsolved” (that’s why Shane and Ryan can’t even say the word “unsolved” on mystery files)

The worst thing is that isn’t even the first time Adam’s content has been taken advantage of, when I was still following him it came out that a popular Sundance movie stole from one of Adam’s horror comics verbatim. Obviously this situation is different because Dear David is under Buzzfeed not Adam himself, but I still feel bad for the poor guy, he can’t seem to catch a break. Hopefully he’s still doing great despite all of this, I’m really happy to see artists becoming extremely successful despite the catastrophic odds against them

@yellobb384811 ай бұрын
Adam Ellis, the artist who originally made the Dear David ARG (which I personally think is really cool and completely different from this mess) was actually a comic artist at buzzfeed when he started the ARG. One of his Buzzfeed comics is the one featured in this trailer, since they still own that IP, but I don’t know how involved he is with the project. I follow him on Instagram since he’s got some good comics here and there, but he hasn’t posted anything about this movie as far as I can tell. Buzzfeed announced back in 2018 that they wanted to make a movie out of the story, but that was so long ago and I know that any relationship Adam had with Buzzfeed has definitely soured since then
@nightmarefanatic181910 ай бұрын
The problem is an ARG is fun because of the interactivity and the versimillitude granted by having them posted in the real world web. Making a cinematically shot film out of it robs an ARG of what made it so special in the first place. And the one time a horror movie DID try to pull an interactive internet stunt, it sucked. Yeah, I'm talking about you The Devil Inside.

Dear David was actually a decent unfiction story, I'm kinda disappointed that the film is being made by Buzzfeed but in all honesty, I'm not sure why I expected otherwise Edit: from Charlie's description, it sounds like they changed the story drastically. For one, David wasn't a twitter bot, he was a ghost who would answer any question as long as you started with "Dear David". To be fair, Dear David was a fun ARG/unfiction story. When it was first coming out it was a pretty interesting story and I still think its pretty neat. After seeing the trailer I'm a bit disappointed in how the story seems to have been changed, and how David looks compared to the photos in the original story. It scared the shit out of me as a kid so I'm a little sad to see what happened to it but as long as they had fun making it then whatever. The original pictures of David were 100x scarier than the whole trailer sadly I suggest watching Reignbot's old video's going over the original thread if anyone is interested in the original story.

I gave to give it to them, though. The idea of a horror movie based off of Twitter in general would be genuinely horrifying. Even being on the platform for more than 5 minutes is terrifying, especially when you click on a Twitter thread and scroll for more than a few seconds.

If I had a nickel for every horror movie based on an internet fad that was long dead by the time the trailer came out, I'd have one for this, one for Slender Man, and an endless amount for all the movies and short films based on that Momo hoax.

When this story ramped up in popularity I was a young teenager and the way the latin american youtuber Dross related the story of Dear David really gave me chills, that I believed it was true even tough I was aware of being a made up thing. I genuinely think what Buzzfeed is doing is just a snore fest with the predictable and horrendous horror formula to be honest, a 100% flop.

This is why having good writers is important, as well as why studios always have crunches, you need to crunch to meet deadlines so that they don't lose public interest and drop out of trends
@joshuaanderson171211 ай бұрын
They haven't been working on this consistently for the 5+ years since it was last popular, so unless they reach a level of making people work so hard it releases in 2017 I don't see how '80-100hr work weeks are actually a good thing' crunch comes into it. It's not that they fumbled the ball because they weren't putting enough work on their employees, it's that they didn't care about it until now. After all, a property can make money forever, right? /s

The image of a child with a grotesque deformity staring at you while you try to sleep is genuinely terrifying. But when you try to explain it, you remove the thing that made it terrifying in the first place. The story is the images. The whole point in it was making you hope that you didn’t see that kid yourself whenever you went to sleep.

The original twitter thread was written by a buzzfeed employee while he was working there, thats why Buzzfeed is plastered all over the movie and why they made it on the first place. Im not sure how much Adam was involved with the movie production but he currently makes great horror comics worth a check.

I cannot believe they actually released this. Years ago I listened to something by Reignbot covering the full story, and it was one of the goofiest Twitter creepypastas ever. When they announced the movie, everyone basically laughed at it for being a blatant and misguided cashgrab. I really didn't think they would actually go and finish it. I'm stunned.

I actually remember the Dear David story as a kid. It was a decent story for something on Twitter, so seeing it become a movie by BuzzFeed is both sad but interesting as well. Most likely not watching it and forgetting about it a second time, and it’s not even accurate to the Dear David story.

The thing that’s baffling to me is that their plot for this movie isn’t even remotely similar to what the actual twitter thread was about. The original thread was just a typical haunting story where the writer moved into this apartment and there was the ghost of a boy living there. The ghost child didn’t die from anything related to their moral about trolling either. He died after a shelf or something in a grocery store nearby fell on him and crushed his skull. Ofc the ghost of David wanted to kill him bc why not, but the reason was because the author asked him 3 questions instead of just 2 like he was told by someone in the area. Also when you factor in that the person who created the original thread was/isn’t involved with the production of the film is telling to say the least
