In the documentary it’s a strong theory that he was in on the bank robbery but the bomb was a full on surprise

I think he was in on it and got double crossed. Not only was he cool during the robbery, but they gave him a shotgun. You don't give a shotgun to someone you capture as he can shoot you. I think when they placed the bomb collar on him and he balked, but they calmed him down by telling him it's fake and it's his alibi, just tell the cops that black guys (always lie about black guys) did it if he got caught. The silly scavenger hunt was so that he wouldn't know where the meet up would be. The plan was to get the money from him at one of the spots, and split leaving him nowhere with a live bomb about to go that would kill him.

Going into shock is definitely a real thing because my mother and I were held at gunpoint in an armed bank robbery and we didn’t freak out at all. It was surreal. Edit: I literally don’t know why I would make this up. I was stabbed in the back during a robbery and was so overcome with adrenaline that I didn't feel any pain and was dealing with getting customers protected, getting my employees settled and making phone calls to my office and the direct office. Sometimes bomb squad members are police officers with specific training. If there's a bomb squad call out, they are activated whether they're on duty or not. Any lag between the call out and their arrival on scene should only be time for them to get their gear and travel to the scene. Also, it would be great if there was a playlist of just the Hot Doga! I keep getting lost in it's complicated fantasticness.

Or sometimes multiple small cities share a bomb squad, and if it isn't based in your city, you are waiting. The NG is the bomb squad for my city, and they are for an area up to 2 hours drive around as well. Lots of areas do this because bomb squads are expensive, and not often needed.

The reason it took so long is because when there is a bomb the police are forced to block roads near it. When the police blocked the road it caused a traffic jam which the bomb squad got stuck in.

i think it's plausible that Wells seemed calm because he thought he'd succeed in getting the bomb off- his family and acquaintances have said he loved scavenger hunts and was really good at them. additionally, the bomb squad was late to the scene because of a traffic complication nearby. and in regards to the police's behavior at the scene, they had their guns pointed at Wells from a distance from the time they saw the bomb until the time he died. they didn't assist him medically after the bomb went off either, despite him being still alive at the time.

so the parking lot of eyeglass world (?) was right off of a major street in erie. because of the traffic jam caused by the police blocking off the street (for the safety of the people in case it was a real bomb), the bomb squad couldn’t make it to the crime scene as fast as they would in usual traffic. that’s why it took so long. hope this clears it up! love this episode!!

This was a particularly good episode. Anyway, I saw that documentary Evil Genius and it was was, as they say, stranger than fiction. Even though the documentary would lead you to believe Brian Wells wasn't part of the plot, I think it makes sense more sense that he was and was indeed double-crossed. Hell of a price he paid! Oh, love the song at the end.

I did the same exact thing. So much more info in the Netflix doc (obvs it was a 4 part miniseries) and it ties up some of the loose details from this postmortem. Two really key points that they left out was how utterly irrational Marjorie was and the other pizza place employee who mysteriously dies a few days later of a drug overdose. IMO, is that Well's was a patsy but he did know that he was on a "scavenger hunt" (which the documentary talks about how much he loved them and he would do the newspaper's daily key find). I think that he thought that the bomb was fake, hence the calm nature, until it starts actually doing something during the standoff. The documentary also talks about why the bomb squad didn't get there in time - they were on another call and then when the police was trying to keep the public safe blocked the road (a main arterial) and it caused major traffic delays. I love Unsolved and Ryan and Shane! Keep up the good work guys!!!
