Wow. "Let it Rain" was always one of my favorite tracks and I always loved the bass part. I never would have guessed that was Stephen Stills. But I'm not surprised. He's a great musician.

I Always Loved Carl's Bass playing and I KNEW from that song bass line It Was Not Carl. I had no proof I was right until you confirmed it being Steven Stills. Yep, that sound like him on that track. Funny, That Song was the song I was at a Jam where these guys asked if I knew that song. After we did it they came to me and said No One ever played that bass line right and you just did. I just stumbled onto these chats with Bobby & CoCo. Geez, I start watching one and next thing I know, it's 2 hours later. Listening to your stories has been an absolute treat! Bobby, your fingerprints are all over a whole bunch of records that I've been digging since my HS days....back when dinosaurs roamed he earth :) I've been a "weekend warrior" bar & bluegrass band player ever since (now a "solo folkie") I can never thank you enough for your influence in getting me started down that path. @@jamesmack3314 Oh they definitely were. And at that time many played in small venues. Santa Monica Civic was maybe 4000 capacity so the experience was like one big family. I saw Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, even when the Eagles opened for them there. Lots of Dead shows at the Hollywood Palladium. I saw Led Zep on their 1st tour at the Anaheim Convention Center, Jefferson Airplane at the Forum, Traffic, Allman Brothers. Such solid, together, powerful performances and not 15 backup pros filling their sound out like many today. Was really a great experience I'd love to do again.

Delaney actually released Clapton's solo album with his mix. I checked it out of my local library years ago. I truly enjoy your recounting these great years of music. Thank you.

I find it interesting that you say that Eric didn't like Delaney's original mix of the record. In the interview excerpts (from 1970) included in the deluxe edition of the album, Eric says that he never heard those mixes, because of miscommunication between him and Delaney. Atlantic wanted it mixed right away, so they sent the tapes to Tom Dowd. Makes sense that he would do the work at Criteria, as that was his preferred studio in the early 70's. Clapton said he loved Delaney's mixes, but the record company took control because they wanted the album released. By the time Eric heard Delaney's mix, it was too late. In many ways, I prefer Bramlett's mix. It's got more of a gritty vibe, and I love the prominence of the horns. Dowd didn't use the cool horn arrangement on "After Midnight". It shocked me the first time I heard it. Those horn really improve the track, but hey, it was a hit, so who can say what might've been. J.J. Cale certainly had an easier life because of that!

now, Kim used to be married to Delaney Bramlett, she sang with many people as a singer, back up singer, now Kim Carmel is married to Bobby, they knew one another for a long time, but I don't remember how she got the name CoCo. Love this team...Bobby W, has been one of my all time heroes growing up, Derek and the Dominoes was important in everyone's life the way Thorn Tree was the coda to the dominoes record...it was actually my favorite tune off of that album. I never really went for the Delaney and Bonnie Sound...to busy, and the mixes never sounded 'right'. 😄

This was great. I wish I heard more on Delaney, and what he was like, bad and good. I did see D&B three times (70 & 71), and they were incredible. The first concert was at the Strawberry Fields music festival in Canada in the summer of 1970. D&B had a cool guest that night as they often did. He was Jose Feliciano. Of all the bands in the three day festival, I thought that D&B&Friends gave the best concert. Where can we find more on Delaney?

Bobby I am glad you found another passion to express yourself. Thanks for your work with some of the greatest musicians. What I find interesting is that Yes Eric has made solo records but he chooses to record with some of the same musicians. So his albums do have a 'band' feel. That is even more true when he tours. Nathan East, Steve Gadd, Andrew Fairweather Low , Billy Preston, Greg Phillinganes, Chris Stainton. They may not have a band moniker but they are as tight as any band. I wish you reflect on playing with Carl Randle. I have no knowledge but I suspect that Carl introduced J.J. Cale to Eric. I know they were musicians from Oklahoma. There are a lot of native sons and daughters of Oklahoma who have made their mark on several genres of music!

I always wanted to hear more about what happened when the whole Allman Brothers band went back to the studio after their show to jam a little bit. The jam session cuts that were on the old Layla boxed set were so-so. I was always a big Dickey Betts fan and wondered how Bobby liked playing with him if they did play together.
