I think the biggest mistake they did here was to make it 33 mp. Instead of going 33 MP, they should have focused on increasing the sensor read-out and also most likely have avoided having to crop in 4K60. Cropping 33 mp sensor = 22 mp left. So remaining on 24 mp would most likely have eliminated the need for crop and the rolling shutter effect in combination with the new processor. 24 mp also gives larger pixels, meaning better low-light performance and less noise.

The only real problem I experienced with my A7 IV is that Sony no longer can call their cameras clean in high dynamic range. This is the only camera in Sony that I have to go back to the basics to expose for the highlight and not be afraid to over expose when I could. Because shadows in this camera is just much more noisy. I had A7m3, still own an A7R4 and the shadow recovery of A7IV is much more noisy than those two. In high dynamic range situations I could lift shadows with other bodies much more clean. You have way less room to recover shadows compared to old A7R4. Color noise appears way quicker.
@CharlPantaleon2 жыл бұрын
What "back to basics"? Different sensors react differently when you push them. It is not "going back to basics" to make most of the sensor. Most of Sony's Exmor sensors (including those made for other companies like Nikon's 24 / 36 / 45MP FF sensors) work well with lifting shadows. Most of Canon's sensors (especially the older ones before the 1DX Mark II / 80D) have more recoverable highlights vs shadows, so you expose to the right (ETTR). Nikon's own sensors used for the D4, D4S, D5, and Df, work better when you recover highlights vs recover shadows. Heck, even the 12MP sensor used in the a7S, even up to the a7S III, have much more pleasing highlight recovery vs shadow recovery. I love the look of the a7S III for photography for this very reason.
@GhosTigre2 жыл бұрын
@@CharlPantaleon his comment was simple to understand. Going back to how one use to shoot. Like the DSLR days. Now some cameras allow you to just recover them in post. Most of these Nikon cameras are do to their processors not the Sony sensors inside them. My A73 has better auto focus accuracy on the iris than the A7IV lmao.
@robythebest902 жыл бұрын
Im gonna buy one between A7IV and A7RIV. What do you raccomend for photo?
@CharlPantaleon2 жыл бұрын
@@GhosTigre I fully understand what he meant. I’m just saying that making most of any sensor is not “going backwards”. Also, even some modern cameras have a bias towards highlight recovery over shadow recovery.
@jamesjin8839 Жыл бұрын
@@robythebest90 Generally, A7M4 is a safer bet to most people. However if you want the full story from me owning them both, they take photos all the same for me. A7IV has a tiny slightly better colors rendering to me. Or should I say, easier to manage RAW color. But that doesn't mean you cant process A7R4's raw to look just as good. My copy of A7M4 is slightly noisier than A7R IV for straight A/B comparison to my eyes test shootin the same scene. But that is surely a given since the A7R4 should have more focus on dynamic range being a high res body that many people would take out on a hike to shoot landscapes with. A7R4 is still a higher price body. A7M4 has 33mp which is a pretty good sweet spot for shooting almost everything. A7R4 gives you more pixel headroom in case you may want to crop in post and etc. My A7IV heats up and became a bit warm in hands after shooting for a while ,and came from older cameras like A7M3 and A7R4 which never heat up at all, I don't really feel comfortable about that. In fact, my unit of A7M4 has went back once for RMA, and had its board replaced, but YMMV on that. On an overall basis, let's say if you currently only want a photo camera, but could not completely cross out the possibility that you might want to shoot video in future, then A7M4 is just an easier choice, vice versa. But in all honesty I did shoot a few interview with A7R4 and managed to make them usable with a lot of work and effort on color grading so they're technically not ouf ot the game either. As this moment we're hours away to A7R5 official annoucement you may possibly find A7R4 for a good discounts. But given my track record with Sony cameras i wouldn't bet that at all. I've since moved on from my sony. just fyi, I dropped my nikon z5 with 24-70 on the body onto concrete floor due to a poor ball head that didn't lock good, and besides a slight stickier zoom turn in the lense,. nothing else appeared damaged at all. No lens decentering or image quality loss, no camera parts crashed and destroyed and I still use that camera to this day without a worry. While my A7M4 completely died without even a hit. lensrenatal had an article that they really gave Nikon engineers high praise for the body they disassembled which impied it can fight off many extreme weather conditions. If I'm overseas doing a job/assignment, you already know the answer which piece of gear I would trust better on for the job. But I digress.

Ngl this is the most accurate review of the A7IV, Well done Brandon & crew! I personally use this camera for event photography & videorgraphy, and it works great. However, as mentioned, the rolling shutter is pretty bad so If you're using this for professional work, I'd reserve this camera for static interview shots and leave the more intense motion shots for a A7SIII. The 4k 60 crop doesn't bother me a ton because, again, I'm not using this camera for video work because of the rolling shutter. Overall not a bad tool to pickup, but If you're more video focused, I'd highly recomend saving up for a A7SIII or an FX3 instead of the A7IV. Cheers!

Brandon: you make many valid points about the deficiencies of this camera. I can certainly see why rolling shutter, slower photography frame rates and crop at 4K 60 FPS. With that being said, it is a hybrid camera and as such you have to choose what your priority is. If you are a hobbyist, and you don’t have a specific niche then you would be fine with the weaknesses. Whereas if you’re a full time professional content creator/photographer, I would expect that you would know precisely what your focus is and whether or not you can use this camera for your work. I understand what I need for my client work. This camera’s weaknesses do not adversely impact my work as this would not be my “A Cam”. I’d use this as my “B Cam” for video production with my FX-3 as my “A Cam”. For a hybrid this serves all of my purposes for off camera flash portrait work. For fast action still photography my A9 fits my requirements. If you require full frame 4K 60, no rolling shutter and faster photography frame rates, you either need to spend the extra $1000 for an A7S III or the A7RIV or purchase both bodies. From a business/profit stand point, these camera manufacturers are only going to give you the best of everything in one body when you spend $6500 or more and step up to their flagship models such as the Sony A1.

I am looking to upgrade to Sony Full Frame but as primarily a video shooter some of the shortcomings of the A7IV are tempting me to save up a little bit more for something like the FX-3. For my use the rolling shutter has always bothered me in video and while 4K 60fps with a crop isn't too bad I would prefer full readout 4K 120fps for better slow motion options outside of just 1080p. I guess I could shoot for the A7S3 with its awesome viewfinder but I think I will save for the FX-3 with it's top handle and more video centric buttons and tally lights. Sony is really giving us some great options.

That fully articulated screen its not very useful without a tilt function. Sony should really have a tilt version available or even better have both tilt and fully articulated screen like Nikon Z9. I have the A1 and A7iv and feels that a off axis flippy screen is not that useful for video and photo when you don’t need to monitor yourself. For low and high angles the tilt is much more useful.. This “problem” is more noticeable with wide angles than with tele that I better to use the EVF..

I just purchased mine, and although I am excited for a new camera, I am not excited about leaving Canon, for a significantly slower photo shooting A7IV. Unfortunately I had to sell my R6 and my RF 24-70 and 16-35 lenses, the plan was to upgrade to the R5 but with the body and RF glass, getting into Canon is just more expensive and with no RF third party glass out at the moment, Sony is by far the cheapest option, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best option for Hybrid shooting. I’m really disappointed that I had to make the move, but for the moment I’m content and at least I can go shooting again.

He explained it. It's more about the fact you have to switch lenses between frame rates. There's nothing wrong with S35. It just means you need 2 sets of zooms which is double the cost. At that point, why not just use a S35/APS-C sensor and have only 1 set of lenses for all the frame rates.

I intend to use the Sony A74 as a Super 35mm cinematic camera and a full frame photography camera. And some of my Nikon F Mount lenses adapted to it. Also in 1080HD in Super 35mm mode the Sony A74 looks almost like 4K. Also the Canon R7 is on my list alongside the Canon C70. The Canon R7 is like a down sampled Canon C70 and Canon C100 Mark 2 rolled into one. I am looking into the Panasonic S1H also body only.

I am coming from the Lumix GH5 and now I am struggling a bit with the functionality. I find it not as friendly as the GH5. And yes the crop at 4k 60fps is an issue. I saw a couple of reviews before buying that say the crop is very small, not that big of a deal but now I find the crop is Hughe. For now I am only using this cam for Night Photography and still using the GH5 for video. I hope I can get used to it and get the most out of it soon. But the crop is a big deal...for me. Another thing that I miss from the GH5 is the screen. I went for this cam because of its fully articulated screen. In Milky Way photography most of the times I take vertical pictures with the cam pretty close to the ground so it is great that you have a fully articulated screen but, I find it too small and not that great. Another thing I noticed is that it overheats pretty fast. My GH5 never overheated. Then I changed some settings to delay that overheating but I haven't tested it on a challenging scenario like going to the desert or stuff like that.

The canon r6 or r5 are good options for sports, maybe worth looking into. The r6 which in most regions runs you the same amount. It has only two main drawbacks as compared to the sony which is a 20.1 megapixel sensor, but its much faster and lends itself to that kind of application more. The second issue is its overheating issues in extended video shoots (hour+) as well as being capped at 30mins of recording. If those issues aren't deal breakers for your application then its worth looking at. I wish you luck with your search, in a couple years I imagine a lot of the offerings in this price range will have these issues ironed out.

I'm hoping the Z8 will have full sensor 10bit 4K 50p.

Big question, Sony a7IV or lumix S1H?

Great video Brandon! I've been planning to upgrade my camera park and was contemplating between this camera and the FX-3. Considering the new camera would mostly be for video, the price was the only thing that kept me from deciding on the FX-3. The photo abilities of my current A7III are just as good as when I bought it and I'm still pleased with the AF even in video mode. SO my guess is that I'll be keeping the A7III for photography and run & gun shooting, but get the FX-3 for video. Don't ask me why not getting the A7S3, that's another story haha.. The stupid part would be if Sony comes with a new dedicated cinema camera like...FX-4.. this fall? My business isn't that big that I can buy every upgrade they come with, but it's a sour feeling when you just buy something and they release a new model. Hello Apple?

@@brittneysworld The main reason is the top handle with the full size XLR audio inputs that I can use in meny of my scenarios like shooting interviews, instructional videos, the audio will be baked into the recording "as we speak" 🙂, also the form factor and built in mounts for accessories. I never use the view finder in video, so FX-3 is my choice.
