The 10 fps raw is in drive mode Hi+, which, concealing the present scene and displaying the prior shot, is often unusable on critical action. Shooting while viewing live, the top burst is 8 fps, drive mode Hi. Also, 10 fps raw requires a CFexpress type A card, anyway, a 160 GB costing 400 USD. But on SD card, the buffer, instead of over 800 frames, is only some 25 frames. So in effect, the camera shoots 8 fps and costs 2900 USD. For such compromises on action photo and mobility amid action video-the 4K 60fps video having a 1.5x crop factor-the 33 MP sensor is a gimmick and bad excuse.

I have been shooting Nikon Z and Sony A7iii. I love the image quality with the Z cameras but hate the auto focus system. I love the auto focus system on the Sony, image quality is good too. The only reason I had to stick with the Z camera is the shutter sound. I shoot plays, weddings in churches and I shoot for a university where one of the photographers was asked to leave because he was shooting on a Sony A7ii and the shutter was too loud. Sony A7iii shutter as well is to loud. Finally the Sony A7iv the shutter is quieter. I never hear anyone talking about how loud the shutters are on these Sony's. I'm so very happy that the A7iv is quieter.

To all the people complaining about 60fps in Crop mode, look at all the things Sony fixed that people complained about on the A7iii, we have to give credit to them. They can't make everybody happy because ppl always complain. Also, they have to keep some things for the higher end models too, if they put everything in this cheaper camera, who would wanna buy the more expensive ones from them? Sony is really good at listening to its customers & I respect the company for that. I love my A7iii and will not be upgrading until this one goes on a massive sale or after a few years. My A7iii is still a beast.

If the screen is the main point of upgrading since the image quality is so similar than it wouldn't make sense to buy the A7iv or A7iii over the A7c right? As someone who has none of these cameras I'll buy the A7iv though. The touch menu helped with this decision more than the articulating screen and bigger body.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth added the a7iv to my bag instead of the a7iii (i'm going to sell the a7s eventually). I mostly do landscape/astro work. Thank you Manny, I think this video has convinced me that my a7 III is still awesome and that the expense of acquiring the a7 IV, it's vertical grip and a CF Express card would not result in measurably better still photos. I figure with local and California sales taxes that amounts to close to $3500. I was thinking of selling my a7 III and vertical grip to KEH as I don't have the time and savvy to sell to a private party. That sale would offset around $850. I shoot almost 100% stills and your comparison of the III and IV was an eye opener. The IQ is so close. There were three features that appealed to me on the a 7 IV, the extra 9 megapixels, the shutter that closes when off and the 10 bit video capability (thinking I would shoot more video with better editing in post options). I know I have serious GAS behavior as I already have more camera bodies and lenses than I really need. I'm now thinking I'll wait a few years and see what Sony has in store for the inevitable a7 V. Thank you for your reviews, they are extremely informative and straightforward, they are unique among KZbin camera videos.

Amid life's ups and downs, 2020's ins and outs, and work injury, I've been mostly inactive since 2019. Since then, I've bought an α7R III and an α7 III, resold them before much use, and recall no dust problem. Yet in late 2018, on switching from Canon to Sony-an α7R II-I soon caught dark spots on photos and footage. My only _external_ zoom lens-a Canon standard zoom on Sigma's MC 11-was rarely used. My main zoom, an ENG, was Sony's FE PZ 28-135mm f/4. Never checking lenses for air leak _rear,_ I now, or later, will. Anyhow, dust appearance was rapid and chronic. At first, I concluded that swapping lenses outdoors-what I had expected to be fine despite the warnings and hearsay-had in fact got dust on the sensor! But abruptly, more dust would appear amid usage only indoors and a lens staying attached across days. Seeking the dust's source, finding no looseness at the lens mount, I suspected that dust already beyond it gets jostled until-. Maybe this fostered my aversion to repurposing the shutter, toughest of all to clean, as dust shield.

Pretty disappointed at the burst rate for uncompressed raw.
@oasean3 жыл бұрын
Using preproduction α7 IV units, Gordon Laing and Jared Polin got uncompressed raw up to 6 fps [1,2]. Polin seemingly insists to burst only uncompressed raw [2]. But the benefit is likely negligible, except to shoot fine art at rapid fire while blowing out highlights to publish the result at high magnification [3]. The main problem is that even compressed raw at 10 fps is overstated or mistaken. The 10 fps potential is of drive mode Hi+, whereby the viewfinder conceals the present scene and displays the prior shot [1,4]. For viewing live, the fastest is Hi, an 8 fps potential [1]. The α7 III, if with poorer autofocus, does all of that. But α7 IV's raw 10 fps, useful for noncritical action-mainly action staying on axis or predictable [4]-might cost 2900 USD. Writing to SD card, Laing's did 10 fps JPEG, but 8 fps raw with JPEG, and 8 fps raw alone [1]. Raw 10 fps, even with JPEG, was to CFexpress type A card [1]. The capacity 80 GB costs 200 USD, while 160 GB costs 400 USD. Sony's quiet shutters, new in 2015's 42MP α7R II, quelling camera shake, aid resolution, but 24MP α7 III's loud clunks, similar to DSLR mirror shock, seemingly return for α7 IV's 38% more pixels. The α7 IV's 33 MP are some 65% beyond its mirrorless rival, Canon R6-12 fps raw uncompressed [2]-and 2020's new flagship DSLRs, Canon 1DX III and Nikon D6. Those other cameras are some 20 MP. An α7 IV of 26.5 MP-10% beyond α7 III's 24 MP-would be 33% beyond 20 MP. Or reuse α7R III's shutter and α7 III's sensor-20% beyond 20 MP-so α7 IV's 10 fps, 25% beyond 8 fps, are steady and live view. Megapixel bias-leeway for crude shutter, then much crop in post-, _then_ print several feet wide-is gimmicky. - 1) Gordon Laing, "Sony A7 IV review: Photography vs A7 III vs EOS R6 part one", KZbin @ _/watch?v=8Mil4Jn51Fc&t=957s,_ 21 Oct 2021. 2) Jared Polin, "Official Sony a7 IV hands-on preview: Don't buy until you watch!!! (vs Canon R6)", KZbin @ _/watch?v=z0jOdqQ73FA&t=516s_ and @ _/watch/?v=z0jOdqQ73FA&t=1235s,_ 21 Oct 2021. 3) Richard Butler, "What difference does it make? Sony uncompressed raw", _DP Review,_ 23 Sep 2015. 4) Jason Vong, "Sony a7 IV-the upgrade we've been waiting four!", KZbin @ _/watch?v=eVvUs9lFatY&t=444s,_ 21 Oct 2021, indicates simply "10 fps" while showing footage of α7 IV's monitor during burst with subject walking on axis toward camera on tripod, footage that to me looks compatible with display either of present scene or of prior shot.

@@VoyagerMaldives eh, if you videography, stick to a a7siii or fx3. Rolling shutter is pretty rough on the iv, looks to be just as bad, if not worse, than the a7iii rolling shutter.

Is the black bar at the edge of screen still available as an option. Or how well is the status info "readable" in bright condition (white font on bright background)?

Maybe you could shoot and release video samples of the Sony a7iv in 4k crop 60fps with Sony 16-55 f2.8 lens. Commentary would be interesting. In addition, if you have the new Tamron aps-c Zoom lenses and the Sigma new aps-c Zoom lenses. Also, do several similar tests with Fuji aps-c prime lenses for Sony e-mount: Fuji 16mm f1.4; Sigma 19mm f/2.8; Sigma 30mm f/1.4; Sigma 56mm f/1.4.

Excellent review. (1) difference in skin tones? (2). For portraiture and events and family would you sell A7R3 to get A74?

I'm currently shooting an A6600 and an A7R3, which would be the better upgrade for Birds In Flight, the A1 or the A7R4 ?

*Looking at buying my first camera (deciding between A7c + G: f1.8 -20mm lens and saving more for A7IV).* I’ll be using it for starting KZbin - talking at my desk mainly (maybe twitch), Zoom meetings and general social media. I have a MacBook 2017 w/touchbar, and will be using Davinci Resolve studio free version. Colour grading will be basic in-built LUT’s on Davinci. Should I get A7c + 20mm f1.8 + soft box light + shure Mv7 microphone + accessories or should I buy a A7IV body with no lense 🤣

for photography only, this or Lumix S5? Is it really worth paying the premium for the Sony?

yeah okay, nobody underexposes images by that much, but apply that noise flexibility onto night-time shooting and you will get a noticeable advantage any day of the week.

I was debating on getting an A7Riii for $2000 or an A7Riv for $3000 and after reading the reviews and evaluating my needs I decided to go for A7iv for $2500! My A7iii is pretty battered and needs help! A7iv sounds like a perfect even/everything else, jack of all trades hybrid camera which means I'll be a happy camper!

100 years from now, Sony will be making gigapixel bodies that can shoot at a million frames per second, and track a mosquitoes eyelash, but it'll still come with a recycled Gameboy Color lcd...
