The trilogy is complete!!!! Well done👌🏾. As a former R6 owner, I agree with everything you stated. I absolutely loved the R6, but I yearned for functionality that the ‘6’ lacked. Custom settings in video mode, no 30 min record limit and a plethora of third party lens options made this a no brainer.

I've been really impressed with mine; it honestly stacks up better to the a7S III/FX3 than I thought it would. For overheating, I've found so long as you have Auto Power Off Temp set to High (which is pretty much a given to do in any Sony), and have the screen flipped out, overheating is really only a factor in shooting continuous 4K 60p. So if you do mostly quick 5-10 minute clips of 4K 60p, you're unlikely to encounter it even in hot environments.

I’ve had one since February and it’s my favorite camera I’ve ever had. The R5 is capable of more quality in video and stills, but I just enjoy using the A7IV more, and the megapixel count is just about perfect for me. I feel like it has a better feature set and better interface than other more expensive Sony cameras. It could have more speed, bigger buffer, less overheating, better IBIS, faster readout, and a better screen. If they do all that (A9 III?), then we will all be in trouble. As things are currently, I honestly would not trade mine for an A1 because the mode dial and third top dial and the articulating screen are all so amazing.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. I want to make a follow up video to this because I've been using the a7IV as a vlog-type camera for the past few months and have gained an entirely new appreciation for it. The mode switch mixed with custom settings is incredible. Being able to go from my standard video settings to 60fps/120fps/long exposure timelapses at literally the flip of a switch is a lifesaver that I've never had on any other camera.

Since the shutter IS the cover, if something happens to hit it or damage it, then it’s a pretty expensive repair, so I think that’s why some people don’t like it. I love it though! And I just try to be extra careful anytime there’s not a lens on the camera 👍

@@ersbit Overheating isn't an issue I've filmed in 4k 10 bit and owed the camera for 6 months and never once seen an over heat warning. as long as the lcd is open and the you switch the heat sensitivity to high you'll likely never see a over heat warning.

Not sure I understand how lowlight functionality works but that comparison was mind blowing. 2nd camera seemed to do way better.
@tombuck3 ай бұрын
I don't know the in-depth nuts and bolts, but essentially larger camera sensors are better in low light because they have more surface area to capture light. This lets them to gather more light, resulting in brighter and clearer quality. It's like having a bigger window to let more light into a room-more light means better visibility.

Top review, Tom! The α7iii is my workhorse and I am very much a hybrid shooter, so the iv has definitely been on my radar. There's a lot that's compelling, both from a specification and usability point of view, but for my use case I think I'd still be inclined to get a dedicated video camera - even if I do end up with an α7iv, because stills and video are different missions requiring different accessories and a different mindset. It's nice to be able to do both with the one camera, but that's really only one part of the equation, and I find that if I try to do that, I don't do as good a job of either.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
I really like the a7IV and it's an awesome value, but I honestly don't think I'd like it as much if it were my only camera. Having the FX3/a7sIII really make up for the compromises of the a7IV. I've used the FX3 on a Gimbal during a corporate event at an airport and absolutely had it overheat in only +80 degree weather, as did the A1 while mounted to a tripod in direct sun. I've two A74 and neither overheated while recording 4K30 mostly bc they were recording in the shade. I had another camera man using an A7c which also never overheated. The two cameras I didnt expect to overheat at all particularly the FX3 overheated. All cameras were recording 4K 30 Slog3, 10bit if it was able. The event lasted from 6am through to 8pm. Multiple battery and memory card swaps for each camera. All had their screens tilted or flipped out. Oddly the glass screen protectors on all of them cracked from the heat of the sun, not from any impact. I've filed a warranty complaint as all my camera men found that quite odd.

It’s great that you want to move out of Auto, but don’t feel like you need to go straight to full Manual. Personally, I liked starting out with Shutter Priority, where you only need to learn how to set the shutter and the camera does the rest. Then you can add in aperture and ISO later and then you’ll be in full Manual! I have no idea about the white dots- could be due to incorrect exposure.

Thank you so much for your review! I found it super informative !! I am trying to decide between this and the Canon R6 Mark ii. This is mainly due to the cropped 4k at 60fps, for those lovely cinematic shots. How do you feel about this? Would love your advice on which one of the two I should go for? I am wondering whether sony has any other ups when it comes down to photos and videos compared to Canon. As I feel like the features on the R6 Mark ii feels more future-proof but also slightly higher in price! Its a tough tug of war haha! I am hybrid photo/video shooter! Appreciate any thoughts and advice!
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, both of those cameras are winners. A lot of it might even just depend on which one feels more comfortable to your hands. The 4K60 crop hasn't been a huge downside for me. I made a follow up video that explains it a bit more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4nRha2ne5uNjpo Personally, I think the biggest factor really comes down to lenses (if you have/prefer Canon or Sony lenses). Sony has a HUGE lens selection and there area bunch of third parties like Sigma and Tamron that make awesome options too. Canon's RF mount is more limited (they aren't letting 3rd parties make lenses for it), but the RF lenses are really fantastic. Plus you can use an EF-RF adapter and then use any other "older" Canon lenses from any brand.
@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 Жыл бұрын
If you havent already decided there is one thing to consider. While the Canon R6ii has 4k60 full frame, it only has about 11-12 stops of effective dynamic range in both the 4k60 and 4k30 modes. The Sony A7iv and as a side note the new Lumix S5ii (and original S5) get about 14 stops of usable dynamic range. Depending on what you do, you could argue that the dynamic range will be more impactful on getting a nice shot, over stepping back a little to accomodate the Super35 Crop

It’s the Tilta cage for the FX3. I really love it- the hand grip makes things so much easier.

I’ve searched every sony a7iv video on KZbin and have only came across ONE video talking about the weather sealing. I just want to know if it’s in par with the Nikon z6ii and content creators seem to skip this conversation for some reason. I know you can buy a cheap cover on Amazon but with your experience using the camera would you feel comfortable using it at 13500 elevation covered in ice and snow in the Rocky Mountains or drenched in Oregon rain?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Ahh, I definitely should've talked about that (I guess I just assume that a camera at this level will have good weather sealing, but that's not always obvious). I haven't used the Z6II, so I can't make that direct comparison, but it's equally as weather-sealed as my a7SIII, which I've never had any issues with. I have used the a7IV in the snow with now issues.

Hey, Tom - thanks for the thorough and thoughtful review. Out of curiosity, when you’re just going out and about for fun, or when you’re traveling, which camera do you reach for? Or do you generally find yourself pretty much always packing 2 bodies?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, it's really funny you asked this because I'm literally (at this moment) editing a follow up a7IV video where I basically say, "I knew the camera was good, but I didn't give it enough credit and now I think it's incredible!" The a7IV is absolutely my go-to choice. It's the perfect hybrid of photo/video features, and it even has some cool things (like more custom settings) that make it so much fun to use.
@cabellofatto2 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh I’m stoked to see it! I’ve been hung up about losing the 4K 120p, so I’ve been carrying two bodies. Guess I just need to start leaving the fx3 at home and get over it :)

Hello Tom. I love your videos. My Fuji X100S broke after 9 years and my next camera is going to be the Sony A7lV. I want to get a great portrait lens, specifically for chest up and head only photos. The Sony 135mm f1.8 gm is legendary but it's huge. Is the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 still great? Is there a cheaper alternative by Tamron or Samyang you would recommend? I would even consider a 50mm lens because I love small lenses on small cameras. Your help is greatly appreciated. Everyone else, please chime in here too. I just subscribed. 👍🏼

It's a very personal decision, but I LOVE the Zeiss 85. I've got a relatively recent review on it if you haven't seen it, but to sum it up: it's amazing. The 85mm focal length is fantastic for portraits. I think you'll love the a7IV too! I've been using mine a lot more lately for "vlog" style videos and I've really come to appreciate it in a new way. I'm thinking of making an update video to this that focuses on some of the camera's unique strengths. It's awesome!

Everything about the Sony A6700 has been explained well. I have a dilemma choosing between the Sony A6700 and the Sony A7 IV. I primarily take photos of sports events during the day. Which camera offers the best image quality in daylight?"
@tombuck2 ай бұрын
There's really no difference between them in daylight, so I think the decision comes down to how pro/intense your photo sessions are. Crop sensors can sometimes be better for sports since they do give a bit more reach and usually sports photographers want to be as close to the action as possible. But the a7IV does have a higher max shutter speed of 1/8000 vs 1/4000 on the a6700. The a7IV also has dual card slots, while the a6700 only has one. Bot of those are more "pro" features that are important when dealing with clients and high pressure shoots. But neither of those are necessarily dealbreakers either. If you want maximum shutter speed and the added reliability/redundancy of dual card slots, then the a7IV is the way to go. If neither of those things matter much, then the a6700 sounds perfect and will save you like $1K 😎

What is the battery life?? How many shots can be taken here?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Sony officially says 520 shots per charge, but I haven't tested that. Battery life is always tough to cover in a review because there are so many variables. If you stick to mostly photos, it'll last longer than if you do video (or keep switching between photos and video). If you do video, different frame rates and recording qualities will affect it, along with image stabilization, audio processing, having something connected to the smart show. In the end, it's got great battery life overall, but you'll never regret having a spare or two.
@nicks2319882 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck ok. But I'd love you to actually get it tested since you are already using it. Normally for wildlife photographers, one battery is not enough.

The LCD display of the A7IV is only 1.04 million dots (a cheapest 1300x800) display. Sony already sold their LCD manufacturing plants to Samsung so they just use the cheapest display possible for a USD2,700 camera.

Thank you for the review. Are you noticing any focusing issues with the a7iv and the 85mm Batis? I am noticing when tapping to focus , there is flickering on the screen. I have upgraded to the latest firmware and I still see the issue. Would love to hear your feedback.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had that issue, just that the Batis tends to focus hunt a lot (but it does that on all my cameras). Maybe "hunt" isn't the right word, but it makes a lot of micro adjustments sometimes.

So sad that in europe, we don't have 25p in XAVC HS... Only 50p -_- If it was not for the crop, I would actually shoot everything in 50p, with 360° shutter and 180° for slow mo, just because files are smaller 😅
@eduvivan2562 Жыл бұрын
I think the only advantage that the A7siii have is the slow motion performance, and that’s just for the 120fps. If you only need 4k60, you can deal with the super35 crop. Rolling shutter is not a deal breaker for most people. I don’t see ANY reason to choose the A7siii over the A7iv or fx3 nowadays. If you need a video camera, get the FX3, if you need a hybrid, get the A7iv. Simple as that.

I really don't know why you didn't open the screen for the overheating tests.... @tombuck2 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned in the video, the goal was to put the camera in the worst possible scenario. If you're a wedding filmmaker concerned with overheating, don't get this camera. It's just not worth having to worry about at all, especially when the a7SIII and FX3 are much more reliable in that regard.

For professional photo and dabbing into video sony a7iv hands down. If your main focus is commercial/pro video sony a7iv is not reliable when shooting in any 4k mode, bit rate, fps exc. Over heating is a huge problem even with screen open, high temp setting, all doors open even the battery door it will over heat. If your a content creator the sony a7iv will be fine as long as your not continuous shooting over 15 minutes +.
