By Subscriber Request: The Return of the 348 4K

Now that's a moose rifle! What could be better? Not much that I can imagine. Those 71's were so well made in every respect, quality unknown today and under appreciated by "modern" gun hacks. Good job, carry on the torch of the 71 .348! I love mine! I've had three 71s, wish I had kept the other two. These rifles are time machines that can transport you back to the golden age of hunting. Hats off to your choice of reigniting the .348 71. Hope you bag a moose with it.

Everyone won't be at your throat since you gave them their 348win fix. That's an really good shooting rifle. This seems to do the job of some hot shot new bolt action only it's old, it's classy, and handles fast. A real moose rifle. Whenever I think of the Yukon for some reason I conjure up images of old Savage 99's, those old 303 Enfields, and that Model 71. The 71 belongs in those Canadian moose bear woods and I hope you get another moose with it.

I kept my 99 in 358 Win...it is a fine rifle as well,,something special about the ergonomics of the 71 though for sure.

I’ll have to search for different targets. I’ve noticed that paper targets get decent groups, but when picking small objects, it seems easier to hit them consistently. I have a Browning Carbine 71 with a peep. A grail is a Winchester with the bolt peep. Thanks again for a fantastic real world video with nuts and bolts and no Bravo Sierra!!😂😂

Great rifle and great caliber. We had a pre-WW2 Model 71 in .348 and it turned “bad shots” into “good shots”, and good shots into marksmen. Getting another is on my list.

No, you pointed to the "point of aim", poi is where your three shots impacted. I have two .348s, and a small hoard of Barnes 250gr bullets, have asked them to make a run of the 250s....probably never. Great rifle, great cartridge.

Outstanding !! Arguably the finest lever rifle ever made. Certainly a GOAT classic lever gun. Love that front sight. I know from previous videos the barrel has been cut down, but it certainly doesn't need fixin !!

Ha ha, I love it!!! I was one of those guys busting' yer chops for leaving one of the all-time greatest HUNTING rifles at home in the safe when you went out after moose. I was beginning to lose faith... after all, if you remember, I found your channel after acquiring my very own Model 71 (mine is the modern Miroku, however, not nearly as cool). I relied pretty heavily on your advice as far as bullet selection and loads, there being such a dearth of it in the industry these days. I would go so far as to say you were one of my most important early "mentors", even though we have never met. So, yeah, I cannot say how delighted I am to see you returning to the faith... 😉

Mornin Greg. Good ta hear from ya!! I have found ever FTX bullet to be fragile. On heavy boned Moose Id just avoid bones if close. Never use a 348, but the 200 358 & ol 200, 358 Hornady's (ALLOT)

you are absolutely correct "with the right target and the aperture sights". Target rifle competition out to 1200 yds taught me the importance of the correct aperature/target relationship. For hunting purposes there is no sight to target consistent relationship. Personally it helps if I can visualize the standard target image overlaying my prey before the shot to maintain that target accuracy in the field. Proven by people I have hunted with who use peep sights. When they zero prior to the season on my handmade plain brown cardboard deer silhouettes ( targets made from fridge boxes) Shot standing at 100 yds. Targets end up with bullet holes everywhere except the vitals many times...Then the day changes from zeroing to teaching..For those that get humbled. Awesome rifle sir, awesome videos. Thank you.

That's some really great shooting with a peep sight , I can't get that tight with mine but it's the bolt mounted sight so I blame it and not my bifocals but I love shooting the 71 . Thanks for the videos

I just bought browning's version of this rifle. Beautiful rifle, but someone left it in a case that got wet and it rusted the right side of the reciever. Been soaking it and using steel wool and its cleaning up ok. Bought the gun for a song. Looking forward to shooting and reloading for it.

I don't think I was giving you hell for using the .375 Win. I was thinking you knew something I didn't know. I would love to have both rifles as long as I could find bullets. It's still hard to beat the .348. And, your open sight accuracy with the factory loads was excellent.

No, I didn't take it that way. I got some P.M's and they didn't really give me hell either. I was taking artistic license. Bunch of people love the 348 and I have some good content on it and folks want more! That's a good thing. Within 125 yards the 375 is fully moose capable...the 348 can stretch out to over 200. In really heavy cover the Model 94 is a bit lighter and handier than the 71. The 348 is far better all around. No offence was ever taken nor meant! We are good!

Congratulations on your fantastic rifle there. I was able to recently find a 71 to replace one I used to have. I hope it shoots well, haven't been able to try it out yet due to health issues.

Ken Waters hag some bedding work done on his that brought it's accuracy about where mine is. I have a hunch they shoot but the complex bedding around the tubular magazine can add some stresses that a really good lever gunsmith can relieve...OR you just get lucky as I did and it shoots well from the get go. The Browning reproductions seem to be the most consistent.

I use those factory ftx rnds in my marlin 336 35 remington it's a 1965 model... They work great for me they group at 1.5 inch w me doing my part... I've killed a bunch of whitetails w it... I bought enough ammo to shoot it till I retire ,the Leupold vx1 3x9x40 works great on it...

The 25-06 was a lucky find. It is a Forbes 24 B.. which was made for a bit by a company (Forbes Rifle) that was in partnership with the great Melvin Forbes. The 24b has a 24 ounce action, an incredibly stiff and light carbon stock and a fully bedded medium weight 24' barrel. Melvin helped them get started and they made an amazing initial run of rifles. They became immediately popular and the demand became hard to fill. Quality slipped and they let some Turkey's out the door and bad press doomed them. Us gun people are a prickly lot. The early models were great. Models from all era's seemed to shoot very well. Fit and Finish problems and some feeding issues were the usual problems. Used ones are very hard to come by as I think most were really great and the problems were all fixable. Melvin will still work on these rifles and he is a first rate smith and visionary.

I understand how the Winchester MD. 1886 operates. There's a link connecting the lever to the carrier. That raises the carrier to load the cartridge in the chamber. But I don't understand how it operates on the MD. 71. I know it's very similar to the 1886. Except; in the way the carrier works. I don't know how the carrier in the MD. 71; cams upward. I can't tell from looking at the schematic, how it works. Can you explain it to me. What parts work together to raise the carrier ? 🤔

First, I enjoy your videos very much. They are very helpful. Second, what length barrel is that on your model 71? It doesn't look long enough to be 24" but yet it doesn't look like a short 20" carbine.

Good spot! The reason I got such a good deal on my 348 is that it has two customizations 1) recoil pad addition 2) barrel shortened to 22". Both make it more shootable and less collectable.

Thank you for replying. Many years ago I borrowed from my friend a Win. 71 to take deer hunting. He wanted me to buy the gun. It was the 24" barrel model and I am guessing a long tang model because it didn't fit me. It felt like levering the lever took the gun off my shoulder. Never had that with Marlin 336 or Win. 94. I am looking at giving it a go once again. I was intent on a Browning 71 20" carbine but now you have me thinking that I can get a short tang 24" model (the more plentiful) and have it cut to 22". That would be the same barrel length as my Marlin 444. Problem solved. Thanks for the great videos, the ballistic comparisons, and all the tips on everything from equipment to boots.

Its a long shot, but I just got a browning 71 carbine and I was wondering what youd recommend for a recoil pad? Ill either be running the 200 Hornady eld xs for deer or 250 grainers for moose (came with some Barnes originals Ill load but im trying to source some Woodleighs). Thanks!

They are pretty heavy for the recoil amount so I'd try it without a pad. You might like it as is.

Love the model 71! I’m thinking of purchasing the Cimmarron version. Do you have any experience with that model? You can get it in 348 or 45-70

I looked at one...never shot one though. I'd look for an old Browning first as they all see to shoot. The 45-70 is a freight train of a round at 150 yards or so while the 348 is a very versatile medium.

Never shot a moose past 175 yards! However, on my Lake hunt I was using the 300 Win Mag Fierce. My first three moose where with a 358 Norma Magnum. I figured the power and range were important. Our last two were with the 348 Win and 450 Bushmaster. All of them between 75 and 175 yards. In much of the hunting we do that's what you will find 95% of the time. However, sometimes it is worth being prepared for that other 5%.

Dude get a professional gunsmith to install your recoil pad. Reloader 19 and Barnes 250gr FN is your combination.

I find the Originals core separate and don't penetrate like they should. The 250 Woodleighs are really working well but I don't like the low velocity. I want to use the rifle on caribou as well and want one sight setting. Waiting on some 230 NorthForks for Bison season. I hope to hit 2350 and get the groups in a similar point of impact than the 200 Flex Tips, with which this rifles is 300 yard caribou capable! Amazing. Honestly it doesn't take much bullet to kill a moose. As for the butt pad..it's a good install. I have a Hornady rubber band with ballistic info written on it that might be throwing you.
