ok..maybe the 350 Rem Mag is a medium, medium? I definately see the 358 Norma as stepping things up to a "heavy" medium. Thought I'd do a test on bullets to ck performance. Too windy for accuracy so I went with some wet newsprint terminal performance testing. Fun day at the range.

Nice. Middlebore madness. My favorites. I'm a couple hours away from where they make those Speer bullets. When I was in high-school I used to go down with my dad in the fall and buy the Speer seconds Grand Slam and another bullet called Bitteroot bullet. At the time they were Grand Slams and Hot Cores were dirt cheap. I still have some 7mm and 30cal sitting around. Back then there wasn't such an thing as an ammo or components shortage and there was more supply than demand. Even farther back in the 70's I remember grocery stores selling kegs of 4831 powder and they would also open a keg and sell it by the pound, dispensing it in little brown paper bags. That was awesome.

Love the 35 calibers! I've had good success with Remington factory ammo for the 350 Remington Magnum! I did try the 225 grain nosler partitions and they held a decent group at 100 yards. More recently I'm using the speer 225 grain loads in my 358 Winchester.. but I use the Hornady Custom 200 grain soft points for deer! If I'm being honest.. both the 350 Remington and the 358 Winchester are a little too much for deer! The deer I shot with these ran the furthest.. I'm talking dead on their feet mad dash runs leaving a blood trail that was impressive! I carry the 358 Winchester for black bear/deer hunting! Cause the seasons have overlap in Pennsylvania. Have never hunted outside Pennsylvania.. I probably should put that on a bucket list! Always wanted to head to Maine for black bear! Thank you for showing the love for these wonderful cartridges! A lot of people never heard of them!

My dear sir, after several years of watching your channel I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoy and appreciate your content. It seems as if whatever rifle I currently have an interest in or a new acquisition, you somehow post some thing relative to that, just about at the same time. I have all three of the rifles in your test today with having just acquired a 1956, model 71. I think I ran across your channel while doing my research on my Remington 660 in 35 rem mag. My savage is chambered in the ever common 300. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and your experimentation with hunting and shooting. It is fun to work with these often, Long forgotten, calibers, and taylor loads to fit a rifle and use.

In the .348 I favor the 250 grain bullets same for both .35 calibers used both the .358 and .350 Magnum. Only have the .348 now a personal favorite. The grand slam bullets are good I used a 285 grain Speer Grand Slam .375 on a big Nilgai Bull and it performed extremely well.

I really like the 200gr Barnes tsx spitzer in the .358 win, the 180gr ttsx with the blue polymer tip is great as well. I think a custom rifle necking the .348 win up to .358 would be a great wildcat.

Nice to see you finally got some decent weather, & thx for the always usefull bullet testing you do. curious though what penitiation you could work out with the 450 bushmaster possibly with an full copper htp and reloaded up to 2400 if possible? would it be equivalent to the others you just showed?
@north61

Although the 450 Bushmaster has poor sectional density, if you select a bullet that doesn't expand to a huge diameter they can penetrate about as well. The 275 TSX for example. Even the 250 FTX is a pretty tough bullet.

Is 348 brass able to be had? Or is it a proposal whereby you have to make it out of something else? I love that 71 …. I want one with a shorter barrel just like that! I’m looking around for one but need to know about the brass….thanks!

the brass is occasionally made by Hornady and Winchester...but I can't find it now. I can find Starline on line. It's all pricey. You can make it from 50-110 which is also rare. www.starlinebrass.com/348-winchester

It makes me wonder about my new untested on game load. I'm using the 225 gr. Sierra from a 24" 350 Rem Mag at 2700 fps. I was trying for more penetration than I was getting from the 200 gr. Hornady SP at 2600. This is for black bear.
@north61
@north61 Жыл бұрын
The 225 Sierra is a funny bullet. It sometimes works supper well and can support a big mushroom but there is no mechanism locking the core so core separations are common and performance is unpredictable. The 225 Nosler Partition is a lot more predictable. It expands at long range and holds together up close.
@craigbenz4835
@craigbenz4835 Жыл бұрын
@@north61 : Initially I wanted to go to the Nosler Partition. This was back in 2018, but even in those mild times they were nowhere to be found. Hence the Sierras.
@north61
@north61 Жыл бұрын
@@craigbenz4835 That's a problem! I'd use the Sierra for Black Bear.. They tend to lose the core near the end of travel. I would even use it for moose and select shots carefully. I wouldn't use it for Grizz or Bison. I think you will be fine, but get some Partitions when they become available!

It's a shame the bullets are limited in the 348, from what I hear Woodleigh are making bullets again, they should be back into full production by the end of the year with some luck, so that would mean the 250 grain 348 will be back at some point in time not to far away it appears, I will get a few packets, when I can get my hands on some, would be great if they could do a 220 or 225 grain bullet, but I doubt that will happen, but you never know anything is possible.

@@frankgagliardo3434 The 200 FTX has a long shank which helps it but I do know the interlock feature can be defeated if it gets stressed enough..that little interlock ring helps but it's pretty tiny. The old 220 Speer FN HotCore was my favourite bullet. Stopped making them long ago though.

@@frankgagliardo3434 I played with Hawks when they first came out and found they gave a lot more pressure than standard bullets. I think the super-soft jacket gives a bit more friction. Keep your loads sensible! They do seem to want to hang together and give wide expansion. Thanks for keeping me in the loop.
