With all the petrol and gasoline prices getting crazier, people have finally started to look at electric vehicles. However for most people, finding a cheaper EV is the only attainable solution as compared to buying a Tesla, which may be out of their reach. In this episode, we look at the available affordable EVs in the market today and see which one is the best bang for the buck EV. We are looking at comparing Nissan Leaf, MG ZS EV and the new player, BYD Atto 3. Which of these cars offer the best value and why you should get it?
Charging Station 1337 is a KZbin channel dedicated to EVs and related technology. My name is Rick.. I am a car enthusiast, who has driven ICE (internal combustion engines) cars for 22+ years, and have recently opened my eyes to EV and it's capabilities. I am starting my journey as an EV user and will share my insights on this journey. I love technology and the progress it brings. And oh, I own a Supra MKIV and have no plans of ditching that.. so, please don't shoot me if you're a pure EV fan.

in the chinese market, byd is competing in all segments of the market, including the high end. it is dominating all other segments except the high end, where it is right behind tesla. in july, it sold 37000+ Han and Tang, both are priced close to model 3 and model y, but offers a lot more features. it just happened byd chose atto 3, a more economic model, to export. it is a mature product, with 330k delivered in china already.

I think BYD Atto 3 is good value of money compared to MG ZS EV chiefly because the Atto 3 has Multi-link rear suspension compared to Torsion Beam rear suspension on ZS EV.

Oh yes, that is correct. 👍 Another thing I may forgotten to mention was the Atto 3 was built from the ground up with pure EV in mind (e-platform 3.0) whilst the ZS EV was just based off its non EV chassis.

Some of your MG ZS EV comparisons are actually with the older mk1, not the mk2 which is yet to land in NZ.
@ChargingStation1337
@ChargingStation1337 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's correct... the testimonials are based off the mk1. But the specs are based off the mk2. I had a look at multiple mk2 reviews and there were only minor changes.. slightly better response, some interior changes, and the obvious facelift, which was from the main complaints on the mk1. Besides that, performance is roughly the same apart from better range (going to 320km) and slight 0-100 tuning. 👍

thank you for the review , you know if the Regeneration can be updating on the car computer? i mean the Regeneration of the brake's is very low even on the high mode . and he don't even stop the car , also because low Regeneration , the battery not charging good amount of energy and its make the car drive much lower Km from what he can actually can make... and its bad from my side , the car do 300-330 km at the most , not even close to the 420 . maybe if they make a better Regeneration its a different story unless its not possible to make it via online update because its something mechanical. another question please , if the car have 15% battery it can effect the momentum or lowering the acceleration speed and make lower results to 0-100km test ? thank

From my experience, regen only helps about 5% of the driving range. The 420km range is probably for city driving and not highway driving. You are about right getting 320-340 in a mixed driving pattern.

@@ChargingStation1337 But is that MG NZ fault or just huge demand and not enough stock? Our local BYD dealer said they expect 1 shipment in August and the second in December and that at the time (2 weeks ago) they had just about sold out the first shipment, so possibly 300 BYD Atto 3 will arrive but that is not a lot. Unfortunately you do not include some important negative factors when considering this vehicle. The most important economic issue is that this vehicle will have a massive depreciation compared to other manufacturers (based on Kelly blue book analysis). The depreciation will be more than any savings in upfront costs. The vehicle has such a slow charging rate it will make long distance driving horrendous, effectively this is just a city car. Preliminary test drives indicate poor handling and performance and possible safety issues with handling at highway speeds.
@ChargingStation1337
@ChargingStation1337 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, depreciation is a given for brand new vehicles and yes this heavily affects EVs (especially on the same market price range). Buyers of EVs would already know this, you are basically trading cheaper initial cost + high maintenance costs (on ICE) vs high initial costs with low maintenance $$ + cheaper running costs (on EVs). With this brand being new in the market (limited data), anything about price depreciation of this brand would be purely speculation at this point. What I do know is that this company can supply more orders vs any other brands in the current EV market.. demand is very high and this is reflected in their pre-order sales. Have you seen my other video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gma1lZmceKiYbNk Of course, usage is personal preference. For city commute with occasional weekend cruise this would work fine, and this would reflect location of usual EV sales (it would be mostly urban). I mean if you travel 300kms both ways for work, this wouldn't work.. ICE cars might work for that particular use case or longer range EVs if you have the extra $$. Performance wise, I don't know about poor handling.. it seemed fine to me when I drove it. You can change tyres if you want more grip. Although having a lower centre of gravity this is still a FWD car and should drive it like one, people can't expect it to drift or handle like a RWD/AWD. 👍
@ensteffo
@ensteffo Жыл бұрын
+Cpt Obvious Preliminary test drives does not indicate poor handling and performance and possible safety issues with handling at highway speeds. Also this battery will have much less degradation than its western competition so when its sold as a used car with long mileage it will have comparatively much better battery capacity. Don't know where you get your "preliminary test" data, but it must be from some Tesla stock holder or something, because its not what any of the many tests i have seen say.

With EV, the future value is very unpredictable. Just look at Tesla Model 3, the market is flooded with second hand Model 3 for sale as soon as Model Y is available for pre order. Some ownerd even forced to sell via $1 reserves. If you believe Tesla will hold better resell value, by all means by a Tesla. But you could be right. But I'm just saying EV long term reseller is too hard to predict at this stage.

@telostia
@telostia Жыл бұрын
@@britishmalayasociety you can't guarantee that tesla cars will stil hold high value 2+years down the line. The reason why it is holding value now is due to shortage of EVs on the market, so if tesla pumps out more cars (they're opening more gigafactories and 1 is already coming this year) and coupled with more EVs will be available at that time then the value of tesla cars will depreciate normally like any other ice cars as there is in excess of them on the market.

@@britishmalayasociety that's factually incorrect. Model Y don't have mechanical back door release. Only front door have. Every EV brands have fire accidents. Also BYD are selling more than the other brands so they have more cases. Maybe you should find out the % of total produce with the problem, and see where the cluster is - that is identify by models the fire occur, and find a link to the cause. Is it the battery technology? What battery? Same as Atto3? Once identified, it will be more cause for concern. If not, it is just taking a few isolated cases and magifying the problem to make a brand or model look bad. Such abuse of information can be done to taint any brand so not convincing.

@@ctai010 Didn't get notified of your comment. I am aware of the Model Y's rear door release. It's underneath the armrest, the cover can remain removed if you like. It's a large tab, perhaps one of the easier methods out of all the Tesla's. You just need to be aware of how the vehicle unlocks in an emergency. Service tells you this when the vehicle is sold to you, the methods are different depending on the model and year you get.
