Interesting test. Battery went down from 49% to 35% and back to 41%. 6% charged/14% discharged - that gives roughly 43% recovery rate. It would be interesting to know how different cars perform in this matter.

@@Pecky138 Depends. Around 60%, I think. Don't forget you're still covering some distance, so you'll never get to 100%. Some German guy recently did a test driving up a mountain then back down. The Porsche Taycan he used had a total consumption of 21.4 kWh/100km. That's a good value, IMHO.

100% is impossible not because of the distance travelled (look at Work-Energy Theorem) but because of the wind resistance and change of speed (acceleration) tesla does better recovery because of the good aero dynamics. but the Atto3 does surprisingly well too!!! 😂

the energy lost fighting the wind resistance and accelerating that heavy car can never be regained on the trip back down. there is also small losses in the wires, motors, tires. but they are minimal

I enjoy these tests Bjorn. We have had our Atto3 for 3 weeks now and living in a hilly city, it is a marvellous thing-more of a four wheeled robot than a car. Our weekly fuel cost has dropped from $70 to $6.We were told by the dealer that the battery cooling system in the vehicle is only for ambient control. Basically if the ambient temp is below -10C or above 40C, the heat pump will cool or heat the battery as required.

Enjoyed it a lot! Makes me miss Thailand. Used to go there for work... Björn makes a pretty important observation. Even a cheapish EV zips up the mountain just like that. Take home message, most people dont need a freakin Taycan or Tesla S Plaid. The EV drivetrain in itself rocks. Great in winter too with ice, snow etc in MHO. Keep it up Björn!!!

I was in a similar situation just 10 days ago while i was on a holiday in Mauritius, on most likely the twistiest and steepest road of the island. And yes it kinda looked like that road in Thailand with the greenery and stuff. It's an 11 km stretch of road between Case Noyale and Black River Gorges National Park, with an elevation gain of 650m. Unfortunately they weren't renting out electric vehicles, but even with a fossil car the road increased fuel consumption with at least 50%. Probably next time i'll be travelling that they start renting out electric cars, just like what islands need. No range anxiety, it's about 70 km across.

I had some Heat issues With my e208 Last Summer. Did a 800km Trip with 4 HPC charging sessions and car Broke down. Battery needed to be replaced. So Heavy Summer usage is also very interesting for me to Watch. Just like the „chargegate“ With i4 m50 in Germany.

Please keep making these videos. I thought that after I got my EV I would be bored watching EV videos but not so. Your videos plus the ones from Best In Tesla and others help to fight the FUD about EVs. The fact that you do 1000km challenges, charging challenges, cold weather driving, parking over night in the cold and your Artic runs...are a great tutorial for those wondering how EVs perform in various conditions. Far too often we here in the US encounter so many people who live in their own political echo chamber spouting out misinformation about EVs but what we find more often than not is they've never driven an EV let alone ever have they even been in one but spout out nonsense as if they're some sort of expert on the subject. The fact that you take the time to test as many cars etc. as you can get your hands on and compile the data for us all to see is a great tool for many of us to fight back at so much bad info surrounding EVs. Best In Tesla did a cold weather trip similar to yours in his 3 or 4 year old Model 3 and what he showed, just as you have, is it's not the problem most think it is to have an EV in some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. So keep making these videos and keep up the good work. We really do appreciate all that you're doing.

The thing with all your videos is that the information gathered is cumulative. Every car you drive in a particular "challenge" contributes to our knowledge of just how good or not so good ev's are at doing various tasks. Inevitably some videos may seem boring to a few because the vehicle being tested is eminently suited to the task and therefore nothing exciting happens but the information it contributes is still valuable. However I never find your videos at all boring because the landscape in which you drive is so enchanting and beautiful. I particularly enjoy these mountain climbs for the technicalities about the car's performance, the glorious surroundings and also the sense of jeopardy...hey *anything* could happen, right?! Keep up the good work Bjørn, try not to chase views, just concentrate on quality and the views will follow, as you well know. There's always people like me out there who have a busy spell and have to catch up later, but I always go back and watch them in order for context. Enjoyed it, thank you.👍👏

From a New Zealand (a reasonably mountainous country) perspective its useful to know how an EV will cope with the slopes. With my Model 3 LFP, I have encountered similar regen limits that you saw on the longer downhills (which is not ideal but understandable). I have found that if you need the efficiency (energy recovery) then you can go down hill a lot slower and then the limits don't come into play as much.

Great job BYD. EVs are so great with proper cooling and regenerative braking. Driven I-5 myself through Grapevine was interesting. Tesla Semi was also driven over this during their 500 mile run. Everyone cuts corners here. It has become so bad. I was always taught to square my corners. One of my big gripes about FSD Beta is that it cuts into the opposing traffic lanes on left turns. It can also cut into another lane when multiple turn lanes, people are the worst. My patience has become so short with people when driving.

Do not drive with Circulation On for long periods. Your body needs oxygen to function. You can test it with CO2 meter. With circulation on it will show you are breathing your own farts and CO2 level will be over the limit. And you will feel lightheaded etc. Anyway, to answer your question hill climb videos are awesome. They show how car behaves under stress and you also test how good handling and regen are. I'm watching from Australia.

Bjorn Thailand roads and landscape are pretty similar with Myanmar, especially with Shan State which is adjacent to Northern Thailand. I was born and grew up in Shan State, so these landscapes are pretty familiar with me 😀😀😀😀

top of the hill: 168 km bottom of hill: 195 km (41%) When you got up to 190, it went down to 189, so there must have been some flat or uphill and downhill for a while before the regen added km again. I think max kw regen number I saw was 70 kw. edit: end of video 196 km. You added almost 30 km going downhill.

Bjørn, i dont agree with you about the round-about rules you're referring to. Using indicators in the round-about is not necessarily when considering how roundabouts were originally designed to work, using indicators exiting on the other hand is important. I've been using roundabouts since the 70's and was taught by professional instructors who were very clear on why, how and when indicators are used. The rule you refer to is dangerous in multi lane roundabouts the reason for this was explained to me in detail when I took my driver's license.

I already skip videos in Thai channels because of low view counts. You just don't know it. For example: Thai people are not interested in Peugeot, Renault, VW and other EVs that are not available in Thailand. So making Thai version of those tests are waste of time since I only get 3-5k views on each video. The same applies for English channel. Making a video that gives me low view count is waste of time.

If the car is telling you degrees... tan(angle)*100 should give you the slope in %. So 15deg is about 26% grade. Pretty steep!

20:37 Hi Bjorn, there is no regen limit. It seems to be a regen limit WITHOUT touching the brake pad. Regen on the ATTO 3 does not work like the one pedal driving on the Tesla. Regen on the ATTO kicks in when you press on the brakes. When you use the brake pedal, the motor regen kicks in first followed by the disk brakes. This explains why you're on the -30 kw limit during the descent while not touching the brake pedal and shot up to -71 kw

Spot on Björn. I live in Sweden but from the UK. And what you say about turn signals is bang on. Actually one of the biggest annoyances I found with driving in certain parts of Sweden. They will indicate to come off no problem, but do not indicate to show where they are going around the roundabout. Whereas in the UK if you don’t do that then road rage with many polite gestures follows big style. 😳. Great vid and you are one of the main reasons I transferred from ICE to EV 🙏🏼👍. Going up steep hills like a Boss. 🤣

I think u need to bring more attention to how shit these Batman (ling long brand) tyres are. In Europe the Byd comes with or is at least offered with wider 235 continental tyres which are reported to drop acceleration times as well. Maybe do some before and afters brake and acceleration tests if possible?
